Wow... Stargate fans are going to be pleased.

Having watched every episode of all ten seasons, a bit of my heart was ripped out when the series ended. I'm one of those people that the filmmakers and actors reference when they say they are amazed by the loyalty of the fans. Yep, that's me. I was so moved by the loss of the series, I couldn't even write a review on the series finale. I wanted to talk about how much I appreciated the quality of the show, the genius of the idea behind the show, how much I loved the characters, and how I was going to miss my friends.

Yes, I said friends (and I'm not talking about a group of people who come over to watch it with me). After checking in with these characters weekly to find out the latest news, I found myself pretty invested in them. And after a ridiculous number of years as a Stargate fan, I felt like five of my closest friends had moved out of state—all at the same time. But, if they keep making follow-up films like Ark of Truth, maybe I won't feel quite so lonely.

Honestly, I was a little afraid to see the movie. I surmised that it might be too much like a movie to have the personal feel that the show has, or maybe that it would be too much like the show to pull off a movie. Or worse, that they'd bring back cameo appearances from previous characters that were out of place in a wrap-up movie for seasons 9 and 10. But, it was perfect. Just perfect. It was a little, it was a lot. It was over the top and under the surface. It was the same old Stargate set in a new adventure.



And maybe that's what I liked most. The film held to the basic tenets of the series and didn't sacrifice anything in order to make a hit movie. Many franchises fail in that capacity. In an effort to make a movie as good as the last (or better than the last), franchises often compromise on what made fans love a movie in the first place. But I should have known better. Having done the series for 10 years, they probably knew just how to proceed from the get-go. It ended up being like a two-hour season finale that didn't end with a cliffhanger (although they did leave one door open to another movie).

So if the words on your computer screen aren't glowing by now from my shameless endorsement of the film, I have to add that if you're a fan, you MUST buy the DVD. Besides the fabulous DVD extras, you also get to show your support for MORE Stargate films to be made. (If not for yourself, then do it for me...) They already have Stargate: Continuum in production, and it's worth a peek at their website to see the Behind the Scenes video clips.

Because of the intensely spiritual nature of this series and now the film, Ark of Truth, I've got to break this down into smaller segments. I have to sort it out in parts. So, come back later for a spiritual discussion of the film. A teaser? Okay... "Defining God by what he's not." That's all I'm gonna say for now. See the movie so the review doesn't spoil anything!
