Glee (TV) | Review
Season Three
Jason C. Stanley
Season one of the show came in like a breath of fresh air to a dull television set. Season two, however, left much to be desired. Season three raised the bar again. With just a first few questionable episodes and a Christmas episode that seemed to lack direction, this season offers a lot. It has the themed episodes based on a singer. The two most noted were the tributes to Michael Jackson and the timely and touching tribute to Whitney Houston. The season is also loaded with guest stars, including Ricky Martin, Whoopi Goldberg, Lindsay Lohan, Matt Boomer, and Jeff Goldblum. The season also deals with some difficult topics without being too dark. Domestic violence, texting while driving, and teen suicide are a few of the topics that get some mic time. And all of this is done within the context of community. As the Psalm writer says in Psalm 133, "Look at how good and pleasing it is when families live together as one!" (Common English Bible) The German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes that it should "not be taken for granted that the Christian has the privilege of living among other Christians." Throughout the season we see the students learn what it means to be in community; to support one another, to laugh with one another, to cry with one another, and to fight for one another. The students at McKinley High remind us that we, as people of faith, are to be in community as well. Bonhoeffer would remind us that this is a spiritual reality. We are not to live this life alone. We are to be on this journey together. Copyright © 2012 Hollywood Jesus. All rights reserved.
