Every reporter in the room for a press conference for The Great Debaters junket was wondering the same thing, I am sure. But the question could only be answered in a way that could not get at the real intent of the question. “Did you provide the opportunity for these young people?” The question was in reference to the marvelous young actors who fill the main lead roles in The Great Debaters, Jurnee Smollett (Samantha), Nate Parker (Henry Lowe), and Denzel Whitaker (James Farmer, Jr). And because each did such a superb job there really could only be one answer. Denzel said, “No.” He went on to stress their obvious talent, hard work, and ability as the factors that won each their roles. ![]() Jurnee Smollett (Samantha), Nate Parker (Henry Lowe), and Denzel Whitaker (James Farmer Jr). If he had not greenlighted each of them personally, none of them would not have been in the film. Denzel had indeed extended an incredible opportunity to each of them. But Denzel could not have responded in any way that would have diminished the talent that won each one their roles. Being the humble and considerate man that he is he, he could never have responded with, “Yes, I did hand them an incredible opportunity. I am the reason they got the roles.” That was the first question asked at the press conference. His response was understandable. But it was the last question asked that got to the real essence of Denzel’s role in the lives of young talent. And that question was asked by a six-year-old girl. Actually, the girl embodied, rather than asked, the question. Denzel had said, “Okay, last question.” Several hands of seasoned reporters went up. However, Denzel saw the hand of the little girl and he jumped out of his chair in front of that room and came down into the audience and asked the little girl to take his place up front. Everyone in the room was seized by this incredible moment. It was as though the heavens opened and happiness was poured out on everyone in that room. The girl was not shy; she was courageous, determined, and her smile lit up the room. Denzel immediately made room for her and her obvious charms. And that was the real answer to the first question: an answer not in words, but in action. Denzel Washington delights in helping determined young people achieve their dreams. It was a beautiful thing to witness. Here was the real Denzel, a joy to behold. Copyright © 2007 Hollywood Jesus. All rights reserved.
