![]() (Trailer can be downloaded for QT and WMV) THE GREAT DEBATERS is inspired by the remarkable story of Wiley College’s winning debate team of the early 1930s. Set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South, THE GREAT DEBATERS chronicles the journey of the Wiley College debate team—coached by the brilliant and passionate professor Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington). It was Tolson’s recognition that the power of knowledge is the greatest advantage of all, which brought these students from underdogs to victors in a time when more than the odds were against them. This fictional story was inspired by the passion, dedication and teachings of Melvin B. Tolson. ______________ I consider THE GREAT DEBATERS as a story for such a time as this. Even though it is set in the 1930s it speaks loudly to our time. With the school drop out rate as high as it is --here is the truth of the importance of education. With the worldwide mis-treatment of current kinds of humans as sub-humans --here is the truth of human worth, value and dignity. In a world in need of good role models and leaders --here is a shinning example in the brilliant and passionate professor Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington). At a time when society is so divided --red and blue states, liberals and conservatives, Sunni and Shiite, --here is a film about coming together in a kind and generous manner. Here is a film for such a time as this. Here is Truth with an uppercase "T"! May this film be a catalyst for change. May it be part of the revolution that comes through education.
