Peanuts (TV) | Review
Blu-ray Deluxe Holiday Collection
Jacob Sahms
It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) and the B-side It's Magic, Charlie Brown (1981) make for a fitting pair as boy fits costume (wow, that's rough). That B-side replaces the 1972 You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown which was paired with it by Paramount, instead replicating the 2008 WB disc, and also including the featurette, "We Need A Blockbuster, Charlie Brown!" Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) gets paired on the second disc with The Mayflower Voyagers (1988) with the bonus featurette, "Popcorn & Jellybeans: Making A Thanksgiving Classic," which includes at least one "twist" that fans of the Peanuts gang will appreciate. While Halloween has already passed us by, this one comes just in time for us to reflect on the feelings, emotions, and sentiments of the holiday where we remember what it must have been like for those first Pilgrims, and how much we have to be thankful for. The kids (like a preschool class I know) may appreciate the non-traditional Thanksgiving meal, and I'll bet your dentist will, too. The third disc hosts the special I'm most familiar with from many years of watching, which is of course, A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965). It's the first on-air special based on Charles Schultz's comic strip, and here, it's paired with It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown, as well as the "A Christmas Miracle: The Making of A Charlie Brown's Christmas" featurette (2001). I do appreciate the hunt/wait for the Great Pumpkin, and the thankfulness of Thanksgiving, but Christmas will always be my favorite, and there, Schulz's faith shines through the most strongly, with his insistent inclusion of Luke 2:8-14 in the special. One of my favorite lines in the whole Bible is included: "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people." That is great news, of Christmas, and throughout the year! This Blu-ray disc set has all of those stories, tidbits, interviews, and more. But it also has that hard-knock kid, Charlie Brown, who seems to take some of life's greatest disappointments in childhood and find a way to explore hope. Beaten down by the world's secularized view of Christmas or his friend's shortsightedness, Charlie always bounces back. He's a bit of a Christ figure in each episode, seeking out those who are lost and hurting and inviting them to join him, receiving their pain and frustration, and refusing to give up. Sometimes, watching Charlie Brown can be hurtful, when we've been him or when we realize we've been his friends. But if we really examine Charlie Brown, we'll realize that we should really be like him: full of hope. Copyright © 1968 Hollywood Jesus. All rights reserved.
