SYNOPSIS
He is the man without fear

Click to enlargeMarvel's legendary comic hero - known as the Man Without Fear - comes to the big screen. Attorney Matt Murdock is blind, but his other four senses function with superhuman sharpness.

He dwells in a world of eternal night ? but the blackness is filled with sounds and scents, tastes and textures that most cannot perceive. Although attorney Matt Murdock is blind, his other four senses function with superhuman sharpness. By day, Murdock represents the downtrodden. At night he is Daredevil, a masked vigilante stalking the dark streets of the city, a relentless avenger of justice.

For Daredevil, justice is blind?

?and for the guilty, there?s hell to pay.

Click to enlargeSuperman saves the world
Spiderman saves a nation
Daredevil saves a neighborhood

Superman is Jewish by origin.
Spiderman is a Protestant Christian.
Daredevil is a Catholic Christian.

Stan Lee has had a hand in all three.
Graphic novels are the most read form of literature in the world.
Hence, Stan Lee is one of the most important spiritual creatives today.

Click to enlargeDaredevil deals with the issues of Spirituality, Faith, Justice, Revenge and Forgiveness. And oddly enough, it centers all those issues around the cross of Jesus. There are so many cross scenes and cross symbols in the film that I had to give up counting.

Daredevil is the personification of blind justice. He is the guardian devil (a play on guardian angel). He shares certain story elements with Superman Bat Man, and Spiderman, such as the loss of a father, super human abilities, a handicap and a strong persecute of justice.

Click to enlargeWe are introduced to Matt Murdock (AKA Daredevil) as he falls into a Catholic church -literally. The priest, a close friend and confident, comforts him and gives spiritual admonishment and direction. This opening scene with its many religious symbols, crosses and close ups of Virgin Mary give the balance of the story its sense of spirituality journey.

There are scenes where Daredevil literally embraces the huge cross on the rooftop of the church. One of his favorite places.

Click to enlargeClick to enlargeBullseye, the story's villain, is "nailed" in both hands by bullets as he gestures a crucified position. Electra, Daredevils romantic interest, is pierced in the side with a spear. There is a reoccurring connection between violence and the crucifixion of Jesus.

There is a search for Justice that goes beyond the scope of the court system (the law) here. Daredevil executes "justice" through acts of revenge that are troubling, even to him. It is in this that the film asks its most basic question: How is real Justice gained?

GUEST REVIEW
BY VAL

I have been a little slow in getting the review up for this film. Visitors have been commenting nevertheless. Here is an email I received expressing a spiritual point of view from a young student named Valerie. I thought it was interesting enough to post here.
-David

I really liked this movie because what I got out of it. The following is what I got out of it, and it is rather long. However I plan to post it in the forum section. Just wondering if you got the same things out of it that I did.

This movie reminded me of John 3:16. It even came out on Valentines Day!

I thought of Matt Murdock as representing Jesus. Matt was just like another kid. Until about age 12, when he has his tragic accident and becomes blind. After Matt becomes blind he realizes he is unafraid of anything, When he is in the alley with the bullies he says that he realized, "Now, I had no fear." It is from this point in his life, since his Father is gone, that he also starts to do things with his Father in mind.

This part of the movie reminds me of Jesus, when he was about 12 and was taken to the temple. He realized that there was something different about himself, and that he was God's son. Jesus also only came to this earth because his Father (God) sent him. Everything Jesus did on this earth was for his father, "God." Everything Daredevil did (trying to save people) was in tribute to his Father.

Just as Daredevil could not see physically, Jesus was not interested in the outward appearance of people. He was interested in their hearts. In this movie, you will notice in scenes such as the courtroom, where it shows the heart beating of the man on trial. Like Jesus knew what was in people's "hearts" to find out their motives, so could Daredevil with his acute hearing, he could hear the man's heart in the courtroom, which told him if the man was telling the truth or not.

Bullseye represents Satan. Just as Satan has always been trying to out-do Jesus, Bullseye is constantly trying to out-do/kill Daredevil. Bullseye also finds pleasure in killing others, just as Satan has pleasure in destroying our lives and killing us.

Elektra:
Click to enlargeElektra reminds me of humanity. Daredevil falls in love with Elektra. He loves her so much that risks his life for her on the rooftop against Bullseye. This scene, on the rooftop, is what I paralleled with Jesus death on the cross. Jesus loved us(people) so much, that he gave his life for us. Since Elektra represents humanity, she had to die, since all of us mortals do die. Daredevil on the other hand, almost died, like Jesus went to the cross, but he rose again and is still alive, Daredevil never actually died. He kept fighting Bullseye, who represents Satan, or "the Devil," (not referring to the Dad who was called "Devil") thus his name "Dare-Devil."

Click to enlargeWhen Bullseye and Daredevil fight in the church near the end, that is like at the end of the world, how Satan and Jesus will have one final big fight to see who will win. Daredevil wins of course.

Click to enlargeWhen Daredevil fights the Kingpin, perhaps the Kingpin is Satan, and Bullseye could represent demons, in any case, Daredevil has a chance to Kingpin, but since Daredevil "is not the bad guy," he spares Kingpin's life.

This part is very appropriate for Valentines Day, and is what reminded me of John 3:16, how "God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (NIV) This part showed the greatness of God and his mercy and love. God "is not the bad guy," and one day,Click to enlarge as it says in Revelation 20: 7-10, Satan will face his final judgment, just as the police come for the Kingpin in the end, God will put Satan in final destruction.

Jesus will still live. Just as Daredevil wins out in the end. The cool thing about Jesus is that he is not just some superhero from a comic book, but he is real, and will be "the good guy" for eternity!
