Screenwriter and novelist Shakespeare did experience history in the making. The son of a diplomat, his father was in Peru during the Shining Path revolt. "Its hard to believe that before his incarceration in 1992, Abimael Guzman - a corpulent, black-bearded philosophy professor - was the most wanted man in the southern hemisphere. Styling himself as the Chairman of the World Revolution, Guzman sought to transform Peru into a Maoist state. One thing: Although ideologically poles apart, Guzman may be seen as a precursor for Osama Bin Laden in his secrecy, ruthlessness, invisibility, violence. And interestingly, many of his men had trained for the priesthood."

Question:
Why does so-called "Liberation Theology" sometimes descend into dehumanizing acts of violence, as with Guzman's priests? And often, as with Dr Martin Luther King Jr., ascend into true liberation of humanity?

Actor Bardem notes, "This movie in the end is really about the journey of one man's soul." What drew Bardem to the part is the way his character's personal evolution is pitted in the middle of a violent revolution.
