CORRIE TEN BOOM AND BONHOEFFER
Subject: Upholding the truth Bonhoeffer
Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000
From: "Ursula Young"

I am glad to see that this film is being presented to honor the heroic effort of Pastor Bonhoeffer. He stood up to protect the innocent in a time of overwhelming demonic forces in the person of Hitler and his co-patriots. Another hero by the name of Corrie Ten Boom and her family, protected Jewish families in their home as well. She like Bonhoeffer, was a christian in the true sense of the word as recorded in the gospels.

The question is asked, "How could a christian nation have allowed such an event to take place?" The definition of what is a true believer is found in John ch. 3, when Nicodemus (a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews), comes to Jesus to talk to him personally about what is on his heart. I believe just because a nation may have knowledge that God exists does not guarantee that a person has been changed from within as Jesus mentions to Nicodemus..."Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. There is never an excuse to just stand by and watch innocent lives being subjected to tyrrany. We must draw upon the resources that God provides to help prevent history from repeating itself. By presenting this story, I believe you are doing just that.

BONHOEFFER FRIEND FELT GUILT
Subject: Another Perspective Bonhoeffer
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000
From: Elaine

I have heard, although I have not authenticated this, that Bobhoeffer had a close friend, Franz Hildebrand. Hildebrand chose to leave Germany and fight the Hitler Regime from England. He eventually landed in Madison NJ as a professor at Drew University School of Theology. One of the professors who worked with Hildebrand is Mike Ryan. I seem to recall that Mike felt that Hildebrand always felt guilty that he had not stayed to fight in the same way that Bonhoeffer did.

INTERESTING QUESTTIONS
Subject: questions posed Bonhoeffer
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000
From: Liz

Hi David, you've posed some interesting questions. If a lover of truth lies, he may save his own or other lives, but he doesn't know the consequences of his actions, further down the road. If a liar tells the truth, he probably won't be believed, but it may mitigate in his favour further down the road. Either way, both are fulfilling Sabbatian Tikkun Olam requirements for the "healing of God's face", doing that which they normally don't, giving room to the opposite in their lives, and bringing in balance on a metaphysical as well as physical level.

We aren't in a position to judge the merits, either way. If you regard this world as "Shakespeare" did, as a stage, with actors, then the puppeteers are those who perpetrate the evil, and the puppets are not to be blamed. But again, who are we to judge? I read recently that yet another "murderer" (who killed on trains in France) with a three-barrelled name (as in the movie "Conspiracy Theory") has told of seeing flashes of white light, and hearing "divine" orders to kill, each time just before he attacked. How many people have been undergoing brainwashing, and by whom? The governments of this world, or is it from beyond this reality?

There was a claim that Henri, Diana's driver had been brainwashed during his own time with the French army, and was "triggered" by an incredibly white light flash seen by witnesses in the tunnel). Now the scientists are recognising that we are part of a cosmos with at least ten dimensions. It may be infinite. I've experienced at least one open telepathic attack myself, and I'm a reasonably aware being, but how much more easy to manipulate those who are not so aware? This is not to become paranoid about telepaths. I believe the attack in this case was from a source based on personal jealousy and lust, but it made me aware of the potential for abuse. And in a reality of infinite possibilities, easy to see how we could be interacting with those in Hell as well as Heaven all at the same time. It's only possible to have true respect for authority when it's earned.

Common sense combined with our own intuition provides the best foundation for clear sight in regard to the outer world. Though when one lives in a corrupt society ruled by corrupt government, then common sense would indicate living discretely while trying to maintain one's own principles, where one has responsibilities to one's family, etc. One of the reasons for passing on secret teachings very quietly when under duress for many groups. I haven't a clue, since I'm not in his shoes, and therefore also impossible to judge the moral or ethical aspect. It cost him his life, which may have been part of an energy exchange required at that time/space, but we just can't tell. It deprived humanity of the genes of a wonderful man, from what you've written, but perhaps saved the world in another sense we cannot comprehend. He possibly ran the risk of a karmic binding if the conspiracy had succeeded, also.

From another perspective if Hitler was the tool of those forces which perceive mankind as a parasite upon this earth, how view those attempting to destroy him? Too many scenarios we may be missing, to get a clear picture. Personally, as a mother, I would probably fight to the death to defend my offspring or any children I saw being harmed, no matter whose, let alone other innocents, like our fellow creatures, etc.. But we appear to be shape-shifters all, so how to judge!?! Especially if the ancient rishis of India who said this is a virtual reality game we're in, were correct. How very ironic, since the Bible is supposed to be about the Law. But then Armageddon, is all about the struggle for/with/about the Law. ARM AGED DON. Sorry if I've mentioned this before. But in case I haven't: The Aged Don in Ireland was the dark face of the Sun God, Lugh (Apollo), known as Lugh of the Long Arm. In Wales he is Lew Law Gyffes, Lew the Law Giver? So his is the Long Arm of the Law. But as Don/Down/Daun he rules the Underworld as its Lord, therefore he is Hades also. The question is what Laws are to be obeyed, which disobeyed? Again, a moot point, depending on each individual's circumstance and belief system. Will Dr. Strangelove find healing!?! :-)
Take care, Liz

TRUTH ACTED UPON IS VERY PERSONAL

David... don't you want to keep life a bit simpler? Why force people to think and make such difficult decisions and judgements? Bless you brother... I love it! Truth acted upon is very personal and must be between oneself and one's God. We can freely judge one anothers actions, but we are totally responsible only for our own actions and not theirs...

AGREES WITH GINSBERG
Subject: Bonhoeffer
Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000
From Jim

David, I enjoy you newsletters immensely! The letter #12 on Bonhoeffer really asked some hard questions. I agree with Justice Ginsberg. We were not in Bonhoeffer's situation, so we cannot judge him. He stood up for what was right, not what he thought was right. Could I be like Bonhoeffer? Those are mighty big shoes to fill. When the time comes, that will tell, and it will come. Not with the Nazis, but worse next time.

If Bonhoeffer did not lie to the Nazis and turned the Jews in, he wouldn't have helped God's kingdom and he would have had to live with that betrayal. Was the church right to support evil or turn a blind eye to it? No more than it is for us to turn a blind eye to hunger, or crime, or injustice.

Should Bonhoeffer have conspired to assassinate Hitler? He did what the Allies refused to do and I still don't understand why. Do I believe in capital punishment? It really hasn't detered criminals. But some crimes deserve the ultimate punishment, and mass execution of innocent people, in my mind, is one of those crimes.

The law (government) said he could not teach the Bible. What is the greater law, man's or God's? God's law and God's word is much greater.

HAPPY SIDE OF JESUS

From: DJ

My name is DJ. I watched the movie "JESUS" and I LOVED IT. Anyone who didn't like it didn't watch it with an open mind. There were things in the movie that are not in the Bible, but the message that was being sent out is the same, That Jesus died on the cross for our sins, he rose on the third day and assended into heaven, that his love is unconditional, that we should talk to God on a daily basis and he will listen, that we should confess our sins to God and he will forgive, that we should never question or doubt Gods love for us or anything he does, for there is a reason for everything that happens in this world, good or bad, and that with faith, he is always with us and he will never leave us. I seen a side of Jesus that I have never seen in any movie or heard of in church, and that was the happy side of him. I know they don't talk about this in any church, or at least some, but there was a time when Jesus was happy, before all the grieving he did before his death. It was just really nice to see him laugh and joke around.

CAN NOT GET OVER IT, SO BEAUTIFUL
Subject: I'm still floating Jesus Mini Series
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000
From: Judi

Dear David I live in Australia and was fortunate to have watched the international version of this wonderful mini-series over the Easter Weekend. It has been six weeks and I still can't get over it. Not a day has passed without me thinking about it. I have visited your web-site several times and on many an occasion, I wanted to write something. But at the same time, I wanted to see how long my ... euphoria would go on for, before I said anything. I was born and raised in a very Catholic family. I grew up watching Jesus of Nazareth and a movie length Jesus. And of course, Jesus Christ Superstar, which by the way, my parents and grandparents thought was blasphemes.

In all the teachings I received, there was always something missing in me. I never felt that I could have dropped everything and followed him had I been around during his time because the catechism classes and masses always made it seem so difficult to be a real follower of Christ. So many rules and so many occasions to sin, and Jesus the man, never really completely existed for me because he never seemed human enough - I felt one had to be super-human and deadly serious to follow his teachings Then I watched Jesus, the mini-series. And for the first time, I saw him as a real man. With human feelings, who shares himself with so much eagerness in the way he laughs and dances and teases and swings children around. Always wanting input from others, so that their feelings were explored. And just the thought that perhaps, Jesus may even have had normal human feelings of love for a woman, was wonderful. I'm not talking about lust, but love.

I found after watching just the first episode that I would have easily have followed him because he made it . in his words . simple. And I felt happy. My 14 year old son, just loved it and said to me . "Why can't mass be like this . you WANT to be a part of his journey - he is SO not boring!" Thankfully, I had set the VCR for it and we have all watched Jesus 3 times. My favorite part is the ending . Jesus positively still around today, and all the children rushing to know and love him. It was SO BEAUTIFUL, I cried each time, rewound that bit and watched it again!! It just goes to reinforce what he said . "I am with you . always." And by the way, Jeremy Sisto ... AMAZING ... I hardly recognised him as I have seen several of his other movies. And suddenly ... he was this Jesus I had always wished to know!
God bless, and thank you! Judi

Hi, my name is Donna. I watched the movie "JESUS", and I have to say, it changed my life. I have become so much more closer to God in every way possible, in mind and thought, in prayer, in church, and in faith. I find myself trying so much harder to please God, to be more like how he wants me to be. Sure, there are some differences in the movie that are not in the Bible, and maybe not in a persons beliefs, but the message is the same: that Jesus died on the cross for OUR sins, rose again on the third day and assended into heaven. The movie showed us that his love is unconditional, that we should talk to God on a daily basis, that we should confess our sins to God and that he will forgive us, that we should obey his commandments, that we should have faith, and with the faith, never doubt or question God, he has reasons for everything that happens to us whether it be good or bad. The movie was very inspirational, and for those people who don't think so, open up your minds, watch the movie again closely, picture yourself being there with Jesus, and maybe, just maybe you'll have a whole new outlook on the movie. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Take care and God Bless.

IN BOOK JC LIKENESS MORE OBVIOUS
Subject: Green Mile review
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000
From: Twinkycoo@aol.com

First of all, for the comment to "Dorothy" the very bottom of the page, I strongly disagree that the electric chair was the only violence in the film. They (graphicly) describe murders, and "Wild Bill" is FAR from non-violent. However, that is not what I am writing this about.

I absolutely loved the film. I of course knew about the Christ portrayal, but I didn't realize that John Coffey's initials were the same as those of Jesus'! I also read the book, and the J.C. likeness was even more obvious. I am a huge fan of Stephen King books, and this one seems a change for him. I liked the (almost) religious writing in it.

But, back to the movie, I didn't especially like Tom Hanks in this. He did a wonderful job of the character, i don't mean that he was bad in it. He just over-used the f- word. The movie would have been just as good if the prison guards didn't have the same tongues as their inmates. The Green Mile just came out on video today, and I have every intention of buying it. As I've said, a wonderful movie.

SOME GOOD POINTS -REST HORRIBLE
Subject: DeepBlueSea
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000
From: Twinky

I thought that Deep Blue Sea had its good points. I especially liked the nails-in-hands sacrifice image. The rest was horrible. Every shark attack was done in slow motion, and you get the feeling that they filmed one attack scene and added in the different people getting killed on computers. The characters were dull and one-dementional. I was more attached to the parrot than any of the people. Maybe that's all the better, though, since all the people die anyway. Whoever hasn't seen this movie, don't unless you need a late night movie to fall asleep by.

ALL TIME FAVORITE CDs

From: shannon

back when the movie first came out, i was working for a small town, southern newspaper. it never came anywhere close to us to view it for ourselves. i wasn't that interested back then anyway, so it didn't make much difference to me. i did buy the soundtrack as purely an impulse purchase. it is, without a doubt, one of my all time favorite cd's. i can' honestly say i never tire of listening to it, the emotion is most obviously there, enough to bring tears to your eyes. i caught probably the last half of the movie a few months ago on some movie channel. i wish so much i had seen it from the beginning, because i think i will never find it. i've called around, but naturally it still isn't allowed to grace the shelves in video rental stores, next to other "high quality" movies of our time, which is sad.

i loved the film, totally loved it. like everyone said, it showed Jesus as a real man, struggling with the life he was dealt, struggling to find out where he belonged on earth. he knew he belonged in heaven, that was a given. but finding your place on earth is no easy feat for any human, and that is exactly what he was. that was the whole point! the "what if" part at the end was confusing to me at first, since i saw only half of the movie. at first i thought, "was i sick that day in sunday school when this was covered?" but that very last scene when he realizes he is on the cross, he is HAPPY to die for us, gave me chills. i can honesty say it drew me closer to Jesus than any other film portraying his life. if only the close minded people who contine to ban this excellent film would just try to understand what Jesus did wasn't always biblical and pretty...maybe i could rent or buy it somewhere and see it from the beginning. if anything, i highly reccommend the soundtrack, definitely one of peter gabriel's best efforts.
shannon peace, luv & :)

COMMENT ON THE NOVEL
Subject: Green Mile and Stephen King green_mile

From: Erik Nelson

The Green Mile movie was excellent - as was the novel by Stephen King. I won't comment on the movie because the comments made have been excellent. I will comment on Stephen King - one of the most misunderstood and underestimated novelists of our time. I will admit - his writing can be crude, vulgar, and sometimes dowright disgusting. That is the nature of much popular literature these days. However, there is a deep spiritual aspect to all his work. More than any popular novelist, his work can be a blessing to those who read him with a heart and mind open to hear the truth of God. King has often been called a Methodist, but I can't look into anyone's heart and know their own convictions.

However, I am amazed at the spiritual insight this man has, not only in movies such as the Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption, but also in his horror novels. I would not recommend King to just anyone, but for someone who is looking for a honest man's view of good and evil (one that is highly educated and well read, as well) King can offer something that many other writers cannot. SOmetimes I do wish, however, that he would quit the horror novel writing business and write more novels like Green Mile and Shawshank :)

DRUID SPEAKS ABOUT DOGMA
Subject: Druid on Dogma

From: J.W.

I am glad to finally see a positive Christian review of Dogma, most Christian reviewers hated this movie. First let me say that I am not a Christian, I am a Druid, and as part of my training it is necessary that I have a full understanding of all major religions. I loved this movie for a number of reasons, but most of all was because it put the Christian, and more so the Catholic, view point in the proper perspective. I agree with your review, and would like to add that this movie is truer to the Christian mythos then most openly Christian productions are. And after reading many negative reviews of this movie it ferther solidifies a problem I have when Christians try to argue with me against my beliefs, and that is, that a lot of Christians do not know enough about there own religion to hold there own in an intelagent discussion on maters of faith. Thanks and keep up the good work, Hollywood Jesus is still my favorite place for movie reviews.

Response: Thanks for the kind thoughts J.W. -David

I thought Gladiator was everything a movie should be !! It was refreshing to see such a well done film without the need for cursing or sex. I am surprised at the "R" rating, in that the battle scenes were very tastefully done and the filming did not, as a general rule, focus in on any gore. I would have no hesitation about allowing a young teen to see it.

Hi, I am 32 years old and to this day like a child I will watch Superman the movie over and over again because of how, like the Bible, the message of hope is so uplifiting. But there is a comparison between Lex Luthor and Satan that I disagree with. Though, in the Bible, Lucifer did temp Yashuah the messiah with worldy goods, Lex Luthor never tempted Superman. All he did was use a visual aid to show Superman what his evil intentions were. Thank you, Travis S. Tarrant

This wonderful film went beyond saying "God loves you" to include the rest of the story - we are sinners saved by the Grace of Jesus. Jesus loves us and will change our lives - always for the better. Real Christians get involved in touching the lives of people around them. I loved the moment where Tommy reaches out to the sick wife and shares God's love as he had recieved it from MeMaw and his employer. All inovolved deserve praise, especially the TV stations who sold the primetime to Billy Graham to show such a bold statement of faith.

From: Daisy

Barbara wrote that she did not want to be tought about Jesus by a sinner. Well, then, who's going to teach you? Since you're an expert about the Bible, you certainly know that Romans says that "ALL have sinned". That means I'm a sinner. You're a sinner. Your pastor is a sinner. We are NO BETTER than non-believers, and it's an attitude such as yours that turns so many people away from God. Please, next time, consider that we Christians are often the only way people see Jesus. I didn't see the film and therefore can't comment, but I think ANYTHING that piques peoples' interest in Jesus or the Bible should be seen as good and utilized to the fullest of our abilities.

TRUE CATHOLICISM
Subject: The Saints speak the Truth! Stigmata
Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000
From: "Luke"

For those souls interested in the Truth, I would like to point out that TRUE CATHOLICISM,(not the misunderstood, misrepresented and often maligned Catholicism so often represented), DOES in fact promote intimate union with God. It does NOT promote empty institutionalized religion, as this movie would have you believe. I point to the lives of countless Catholic Saints throughout these past two thousand years. These men and women have given themselves entirely to Jesus, and did so by the direction and guidance of the Catholic Church. If you want to know the truth of the church I urge you to read the lives of some of these saints. These men and women give witness to the truth of the teaching of the Catholic Church founded by Jesus himself. The church has proclaimed from the day of Pentecost, and continues to the present day, the truth of Christ ,and her roll is to teach and protect that Truth as revealed and handed on to the Apostles by Christ Jesus. Just as God has given us parents for our guidance and protection in our earthly life, so too, Jesus has left us a spiritual guide and protector, in that of the Catholic Church, before he ascended to the Father in Heaven. One final note...If your readers are interested in reading about a True modern day Stigmata may I suggest that they read on the life of the Blessed Padre Pio. Blessed Pio was a very holy soul, a Catholic Priest whom carried the Stigma many years into his death. He lived in this century, and his life, and his stigmata have been thoroughly documented. He will most certainly be declared a Saint in our life time. God Bless you all....remember seek always the Truth...not just what is comfortable or pleasing, but Truth...IT DOES EXIST, and I believe it is held in it's fullness, within the church Jesus Christ himself founded, and of which He said,"I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven." Mt 16; 18

NOT FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
Subject: are you a christian? Battlefield Earth
Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000
From: Billie

Hey David, I was reading your reviews of "dinosaur:", then I got to "battlefield earth" and read some of your gripes about "religious intolerance". Do you read your Bible? Are you saved? Don't you know that God Himself declares "beside me there is NO saviour"? Now if you are a Christian (meaning you follow Jesus of Nazareth and have become convinced that He is the promised messiah AND that He is GOD,and that His work of atonement on the cross and that work ONLY is what saves you), then there can be no room for "religious intolerance".

There is God's truth, and the lies of the enemy. That's it. Scientology is false doctrine intended by satan to deceive and we cannot compromise on our beliefs simply to make a group of "religious" people feel good. We are not called to be man-pleasers, and if you cannot stand for truth and tell folks exactly what God's word says about their misguided attempts at redemption or spiritual healing, then why say you are a Christian? Just tell it like it is, don't get hung up with political correctness. God says homosexuality is a sin, should we be accepting with open arms the multitude of openly gay "pastors" and "ministers" that seems to be rising up lately? Of course not! We should have arms open in love to them, but we MUST also be clear that we do not accept their lifestyle and make emphatically clear that they must turn from this abominable lifestyle.

And if you or anyone else wants to say that I or my brethren who agree with this are practicing "religious intolerance", I leave you with these words FROM THE BIBLE: But Peter and John answered and said unto them," Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." Acts 4:19,20 Your brother in His service, Billie Q.

My response: I think you mean "there is no room for religious tolerance." One of the guarantees of the (USA) Bill of Rights is freedom of religion. Hitler was not tolerant of the Jewish faith. Millions died. I enjoy a free America. If being a Christian means I can not be tolerate and respectful of people of other faiths (or sexual preferences), then by your definition I am not a Christian. I guess what I would say to you is: I am a follower of Jesus and a lover of all people. Your words make me feel sorrow for you. I am for the free expression of faith by all people, and I would die on that hill. "For God so loved all the world that..."

HURT BY SOME COMMENTS
Subject: The Best Version of the story of Jesus ever!!! JesusMiniSeries
Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000
From: Yeghizar

I loved this movie and I feel very hurt by the comments of modern day Pharrisees and Sadducees. They are so intent on treating non-Christians like they are nothing and their opinions are nothing. There might have been a few unusual scenes like the Gethemane and bird sequences, but does that mean it's a horrible movie??? Of course not!!! They call this miniseries blasphemous and deceptive. How can that be when this movie brought me out of a 5 year spiritual coma and made me want to attend church again??? Mary clearly stated that Joseph believed the bird was only "stunned" so this was not in any way thought of as the first miracle. In the book of John, Jesus DID say "My hour has not yet come," when Mary told him about the wine problem. Mary ignored Jesus (heehee) and went to the servant anyway and told him to listen to whatever Jesus told him to do. So in a sense, Jesus needed a bit of encouragement now and then. Why would God have given the Lord human parents if he didn't need them???

Also, this mega-controversial thing about Jesus and Mary of Bethany!!! The Bible says he was tempted in every way. I know he was the Savior, but he was human, and I am positive, I know in my heart, that he pondered the idea of a NORMAL life. Think of it: the choice between having a wife, children, normalcy against the choice of being brutalized, spit upon and murdered for the sins of every human being on earth??? Don't tell me he wasn't tempted to choose a life of unremarkable normalcy!!! Besides, He ended up obeying his Father's command and choosing that terrible/wonderful fate. So what is everyone griping and moaning about???!!!

And finally...I am SICK TO DEATH of people's attitudes about nudity. It's no wonder so many children are so warped and disturbed and afraid of sexuality. God created sexuality and we ARE all nude under our clothing!!! We are only reinforcing the negative unhealthy attitudes when we try to shield our children from seeing nakedness. It's only a human body with no clothes on!!! Get a grip!!! Nudity and sex aren't the enemy, Satan is, and Satan is the one who created shame and fear, not God!!!

Thank you to Five Mile River, Roger Young, Judd Parkin and Lorenzo Minoli for this very powerful, positive, moving and God-glorifying film. Thank you David for this great site and the wonderful photos. I'm a bit disappointed and disillusioned with CBS for feeling it necessary to remove the numerous footage they removed. I saw the European ending to Jesus thanks to my local news and I too would love to have the entire cut of JESUS with no editing and no scary commercials : ) Where can I order it???
Thank you and God bless and keep you.

David--- I have been checking in to your website for the past few months, since i heard of it, and applaud your work. I myself am a Junior at Messiah College in PA majoring in film studies. I'm getting a chance to go out to LA for a semester this fall (a bit of a tradeoff due to the fact that the film program deals very little with FILM on campus). but i digress. A few thoughts enter my head as I read your review, as people write in to dis your site and admonish your "corrupt morals". Judges they aren't. I am very excited to see the growing spirituality in films today, and your analyses are insightful and riveting.

But my question is: is it enough? Is a growing sense of "spirituality" or talk of a vague god or angels doing the trick? In my mind as a Christian, if Christ isn't in the picture, if that part of it is glazed over, then what good is it? An answer I find is that it is good to get people, audiences, thinking about their spirituality and about God. They can then investigate this and find Jesus in their own exploration. However this might be a bad thing...if people watch "touched by an angel" and find spiritual happiness when they watch a certain movie, that's great, but what if they are lulled into thinking that that is enough.

In my mind, and with what i hope to accompilish in films, I want to reach the public with the specific message of salvation given by belief in Jesus. I'm not talking the videos that are stocked in Christian bookstores. I'm talking big screen. And I know that the Message can make it there. It seems that sometimes it is assumed that just because someone is making a film about Christ, that because the gospel message is truth, that it doesn't matter what kind of production quality or value comes out. wrong. I'm sure you've heard of the upcoming release of Left Behind the movie, I'm excited, hoping that it is the start of something big.

Anyway, i apologize for going on so long. I can really relate to what you are doing. A local church ( a fairly big one, upon checking if my video skills couild be of any use i found myself to be way out-of-mah-league) has produced a few shorts in which they take popular movies, i.e. Matrix, Titanic, etc. and edit together clips with written words and dubbed in talking to do basically what you do. they show the meaning of the movie in a whole new, Christ-centered light. And that is boss, and I say keep it up brother. I'm not really sure what direction God is going to take this life o mine, but im looking forward to it. Ah well, just wanted to give a word hello.
In Christ, Jeremy

GOD'S WORD IS FOR MEN!!!

From: John

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive. [Ephesians 4:14] God's word is for men, and not for dinosaurs.

My response: For men? Is God's word also for boys, girls and women? I am curious, what do you think of the parables? Should I snip them out of my King James Bible? Also, Ephesians has something against dinosurs? --I guess I missed the link? -David

THE VIDEO
Subject: Jesus Miniseries Video

From: "Woodrow Rhea"

I noticed some email writers want to buy the video. I ordered mine at www.cbs.com on May 18. Jeremy Sisto looked like many classic paintings of Jesus, don't you think, in some scenes. I loved the pace of the film; the director drew the viewer into Sisto's Jesus much like David Lean drew us into Peter O'Toole's Lawrence of Arabia. Lovely. Soft closeups, minimal dialogue. Buy the music inspired by miniseries for the young people in your life, wonderful! This is indeed a Jubilee Year for Catholics--did you know the Pope was presented with the video by the actors, the director and producer, and he gave the film his blessing? I have offered my parish's youth minister my miniseries video anytime she wants to borrow it. She says it would be great for a discussion group. Thanks for your website. It warms my heart that so many young people are responding to this film.
Peace be with you. buzznat@dellnet.com

Greeting: My husband and I are both pastors and while we did not get to see the 2nd half of the movie, we both thought that it was a well done, thought provoking reflection on the life of Jesus. I especially loved the portrayal of his laughing in a full, rich, hearty manner on several occasions. If even just one person got a sense of who Jesus is, then the time and effort will have been worth it.

TAOIST OR ZEN?

From: Rev. Mike

Was it just me or was there not a lot of Eastern thought being promoted in AB? I don't know if it would be correctly identified as Taoist or Zen, but both Ricky and Lester seem to come to the conclusion that "everything is going to be OK in the end - things have a way of working themselves out." The damage done by pursuit of materialistic pleasures is clearly shown, and that ties in with the Buddhist idea of liberation through freedom from desire. I would welcome response by someone more knowledgable about such things.
Thanks, Mike

GOOD SPIRITUAL COMMENT
Subject: STUNNING film STIGMATA
Date: Thu, 8 Jun 2000
From: Jessi Marie

Hello. I am a 17-year-old aspiring actress/screenwriter, and I was happily surprised by Stigmata. At first glance, it seemed to be another "Satanic thriller", but thanks to your reviews, I swallowed my doubts and rented it. This film went straight to my highly selective list of favorite movies. Besides being visually stunning (the lighting, settings and camera angles were terrific) and very attention-grabbing (I didn't breathe or remove my eyes from the screen the entire time), Stigmata had some very interesting spiritual themes.

I loved the emphasis on salvation through a relationship with God, rather than legalism, and the disdain for the need for "intercession" between a person and God. I also especially liked Kiernan's story of conversion and God's use of an atheist to brinmg about his "revelation". But as to that revelation- it wasn't anyhting especially earth-shattering. The gospel of Thomas, while not aknowledged by the Catholic church, is far from being repressed. But it sure does add some drama to the plot. One of the reviews said that when Frankie tried to kill Kiernan, she was...for lack of a better word, "possessed"...by the spirit of Alameida.

The reviewer then asked why a Catholic priest would try to kill Kiernan or mock Christ the way he did. I had understood it that at this time, Frankie was possessed by a demon, as Kiernan had mentioned before. When Frankie was possessed by Alameida, she partially took on his image- old, wrinkled skin and a limping walk. She also spoke Portuguese at this time, as Alameida would have. But when Frankie tried to kill Kiernan, she had none of these. But she did speak with a deep, growly voice- what I understand to be a voice of the demon possesed. She also had strength enough to throw Kiernan across the room- too much strength for an old man. As for cursing God- and mocking Kiernan- it would then make sense for Frankie to be demon-possesed. From what I've read about demons (mostly from The Screwtape Letters =) ), this is what they do- know your weaknesses and use them against you. And about that...is possesion by a human spirit a Biblical concept? I didn't think it was, but I 've never really heard much about that...

A few other things...did anyone notice what Frankie was eating in the bathtub, right before recieving the first wound? An apple...as in possibly a symbol of the original sin and knowledge of good and evil? And since you're so big on telling us the meaning behind character's names...the cardinal who was so adamant about keeping the secret gospel hidden was Cardinal Houseman... as in he was so concerned with the church as the "building of wood and stones". And one more thing- stigmatics apparently recieve wounds through the wrists. But in the picture of St. Francis of Asissi, his wounds seemed to go through the palms of his hands. I rewound it and watched it twice, just to make sure. Did anyone else catch that? Well, just wanted to give my opinion and maybe raise a few more questions. Thanks for such a great site- it's opened my eyes to some great films I probably never would have seen otherwise.
Sincerely, Jessi Marie

fcc petition 2493 & 2495 we sent this to rosie and pastor kennedy HELP23:35 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: Paulett911 To: Paulett911 Rosie, I am in need of a lifeline...for 1 million signatures! My name is andrea not paulette ( we don't have a computer so I am using my mother in laws computer and sign on to get this information to you). I am writing you because of the impact of the situation and I could not think of any one else with the notoriety and audience that you have. If you even mention this on one of your broadcasts you will reach more people in those few sentances than I could hope to in months! Fifteen years ago Madeline Murray O'Hare, an atheist, and her organization successfully eliminated prayer and any biblical scripture from being read in our schools...They are on the move again, only this time they are targeting the airwaves of america...the radio and television...and to make things even more urgent...They have been granted a federal hearing with the Federal Communications Commission in Washington! FUrther they are targeting to remove all Christmas programs, songs, and carols from the public schools. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THis group presented their case with a petition of 287,000 signatures and we are pushing for 1 million to stop their effort. This situation is vital to preserve not only our heritage, but also the future for our children and for those who cannot get out and speak for themselves. This country was founded on christian pricipals and should at least have them available for those who care to learn. We need to send a message to the fcc that those who would not hear about God should get down off their soap box and change the channel! I am not the original presenter of the petition to stop this action, but I can not sit by and wait for someone else to push this issue. There are millions of people that could not get out and go to church even if they could get themselves out of bed to try. For these people their lifeline to the living word is the radio or the gospel hours on television.

My dream is not just to get 1 million signatures to stop the petitions this time around but to get multiple millions of signatures to send a clear message that will prevent a hearing from being granted in the future. Can you help and just mention this a time or two with the address to send letters of opposition? I would be so grateful! The original petition requested that individuals send a dated letter to the Federal Communications Commission, Washington DC, 20054, regarding Petitions 2493, 2495 and reads as follws... Dear sir or madam, I am an American and I am thankful for my American Heritage, Our forefathers founded this country under premise of a strong belief and faith n God and his principles. I am also very much aware of the role that our Chrisitian faith has played in the freedon that we Americans now enjoy. THerefore, I protest any effort to remove from radio or television, programs designed to nurture faith in fod, or remove Christmas programs, Christmas songs and Christmas carols from the public airwaves, schools, office building, etc. as proposed in petitions 2493 or 2495. sincerely name________________________________ address______________________________ city/state_____________________________ zip code___________________ Rosie...Thank you in advance for any assistance you can lend. I'm just amazed at how far people can stretch to rationalize that some schlocky Hollywood production is a really good thing. If Christianity means some sort of vague idea of being nice to people, you might have a reason, but there is more of the New Age than the Bible in the "good" points you try to make for "Dinosaur". David Bump -- Philippians 3: 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but [this] one thing [I do], forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Grace and peace to you, Wow, David i am VERY impressed with your site... it is so rare that I get to see the work of a "non-narrow minded" Christian. What a breath of fresh air. Anyway, just one comment... i was just surfing by actually and i was caught by your review of 'the Green Mile.' It was a great review, by far one of the most powerful and spiritual film that I have seen Hollywood put out in a long time!

Well, If you woudl like to put excerpts of this letter on your site please feel free, but the main purpose of this letter is for a question that I would be glad if you could answer it for me. Not too long ago, I received one of those "Christianized Chain letters" ...ya know that ones that are supposed to show other how much you really care about Christ, which is demonstrated by not braking the chain and sending it to your friends...basically I consider those a "chain letter Virus" ....anyway, one of these such letters recently found its way to my mailbox... in it was the statement that there was a film that was to be made about Jesus and His disciples, in which they were all portayed as being Homosexuals. Do, you know if this is true? Is there such a film that is in the stages towards production? Please let me know anything that you know about the validity of this assurtion. Or if you could direct me to another site that may have the info I am looking for.
Thanking you in advance, A perplexed brother, Erik

BATTLEFIELD AND DINOSAUR
Subject: Re: some reviews to post?
Date: Sun, 4 Jun 2000
From: Robin Simmons

some movie reviews from R. Simmons

"BATTLEFIELD EARTH" Don't see this movie. Okay? Seriously, there's no rational human explanation for this film's existence other than it's some kind of secret Scientological evangelistic effort devised by the supposedly dead (but who somehow still cranks out books) L. Ron Hubbard -- the sci-fi hack founder of his own religion. Perhaps L. Ron's followers see this flick as some kind of GREAT TRUTH from the pen of their leader, but to the uninitiated, or "cleared", it's an incomprehensible mind-numbing (and deafening) experience. Someone should rub John Travolta's nose in this steaming pile of cinematic excrement. And it cost 70 million buckaroos. A real obscenity. I've seen more artistic and interesting road kill.

DINOSAUR My two boys, ages 6 and 12, and I were dazzled by the big screen trailer of Disney's DINOSAUR a month or so ago. We even downloaded the long version of the trailer on the internet. Our anticipation was high when we finally went to see the movie this weekend. The opening was eye-popping and almost surrealistic in its photo-realism. The meteor storm was thrilling and loud. We looked at eachother and figured we were the first to be in on something really cool. And then the creatures start talking. And talking and talking. In English, no less! And what they have to say is hardly worth listening to. Insipid really. And then the family of dinos and hangers on, weird little annoying lemurs, start on their trek to a safe place -- their much talked-about nesting grounds. Don't read further if you plan to see this movie because I'm going to give away the plot. Here goes: the dinos walk and walk and walk and and talk and talk and talk and finally get to where they want to go. That's it. Seriously. I heard no laughs or gasps fom the audience we were with. Dead silence. No emotion, no metaphor and no meaning. "The Lion King" this is not. Along the way, a baby dino raised by the lemurs grows up and fights a very nasty carnasaur, who, by the way, only speaks in screeches and growls and comes off as the most interesting and believable of all the creatures (although we've seen the same basic attack scenario in "Jurassic Park"). By this time I was kind of rooting for the nasty meateaters with the bad underbite. My youngest son spent the better part of the movie with my glow in the dark wrist watch held up to his eye watching the time SLOWWWWWWLLLLY pass. Yes, the technology behind this movie pushes the envelope for computer graphic creations and creatures meleded into a naturalistic setting. It looks real. The ads say something like, "You've never seen anything like this." It's true -- and that's not necessarily a good thing. This behemoth will no doubt make tons of moola for Disney no matter what the reviews. However, it looks like a movie created in committee by genius techies and a roomfull of still wet-behind-the-ears suits who pasted together a storyline that welled up from their (conveniently forgotten?) first viewing of "Land Before Time."

STRONGLY RECOMMEND
Subject: An accurate depiction: Is this Bad? Last Temptation of Christ
Date: Sat, 3 Jun 2000
From: Ephraim Brown ephraimbrown@yahooo.com

I seek spiritual fullfillment from God, and I also seek truth. Though this movie goes against the flow of traditional teachings, I believe that it depicts a very truthful and meanful side of Jesus as a human being. Though he was the son of God and the savior of mankind, traditional teachings have overlooked the fact that he was a real man, with real problems just like any other human being. Why is it considered so bad by so many people to depict him in this manner? I beleive that in order to truly know God and understand the message and teachings of Jesus Christ, we must first approach them with an open mind, and then we must never be affraid to question. My question of Christ of the years has brought me closer to him. And many Christians, though faithful, seem to follow blindly saying only: "Jesus was the son of God, he was perfect and sinless, and you have to believe that he died on the cross in order to get to heaven". But instead of simply following blindly, I prefer to ask two questions about the nature of Jesus: "how" and "why". I think the "hows and whys" are important for the spiritual growth of an individual. If we do not question, than how are we to learn? This film is a wonderful piece of work that isn't affraid to ask the questions that have been disregarded by so many for so long. It makes us realize that like us, Jesus was human. And in realizing this, we can see a greater connection between him and us. The film depicts him as a man who was constantly filled with temptation, but he defeated the temptation. As human being constantly in search of a greater understand of God and Christ, I find this depiction very uplifting and hopefull. I also found this movie to be the most accurate depiction of Jesus' time. Instead of the traditional "Jesus" movie with a mostly white cast all dressed in unrealisticly tastefull costumes walking around unrealistically "pretty" sets, this movie depects an Isreal that is most complacent with Jesus time: full of shabilly dressed, hungry and politically oppressed people who had dark skin, middle-eastern features living in broken down and shanty homes that were barely adaquet for living. This was quite an amazing achievement considering the low-budget that Scorsese had to work with. Now whenever I think of what Israel must have been like durring Jesus' time, the first thing I think of is wonderful sets of the Last Temptation. But for me, one of the most enthralling attributes of this film was the utterly AMAZING musical score by Peter Gabriel. He takes all of the stunningly realistic atmospheres, settings and situations that Scorsese so wonderfully put together and created a BRILLIANT musical backdrop that added even more more beauty and fascination to them. I see Peter Gabriels composition here as possibly one of the finest musical scores ever composed in the history of modern film. I would strongly recommend this movie to all, believer and non-believer.

He is a strong and forceful voice for what used to be called common decency. I find myself nodding in agreemtn with him. Sometimes, I even have to shout Right on! Today, he mentined that his houshold is TV-free. Too bad all homes are not that way. It is clear that TV does much more harm than good. Is that the source of its appeal? There is no doub that evil is attractive. That attracion has made many peopole in the movies and television extremely rich. It has also undermined and eroded many traditional values. Those values held society together. It is no accident that soceity is starting to unravel morally. Movies and Tv share mch of the blame for this phenomenon. Only by diminishing or eliinating the influence of these media can their damage be reversed. Maybe not completly, but it is a good start. It wil happen when the people demand it. Will they demand it? It's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. But as always the movie reviewer's would not know a good movie if it kicked them in the teeth. I think that Ian Smith and Joesph Mazzello should be honard for their fine performances in a story that deals with tragedy, humor, love, friendship and labeling in such an honest and moving way. So many people can relate to this in one way or another, as so many people have said on this page. I only wish that the bureaucrats could have let the child in them enjoy the movie too.
