Kudos to Vickie Rose, for directing a very good movie, it is heartfelt, and even brought tears to my eyes. Very sweet, and the girl who played Karen, was simply effective in portraying someone who is mentally challenged, it wasnt another of those "they play off the mental illness in a funny way, and not the right way" Job well done.
May God Bless you.

MORE INFO ON JOAN OF ARC
Subject: Joan of arc- the virgin warrior
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000
From: heidi

I just finished Regine Pernouds book-"Joan Of Arc-By herself and her witnesses" (Pernoud is soposed to be THE expert on Joans life) I had some more thoughts.. I have studied Joan for 2 years and have been interested in the making of this movie - especially after the historical flop the Messenger was- case in point- Joans sister was not raped and killed- She died in childbirth. Another thing is that Ron Maxwell (who also wrote Gettysburg- a screen play that Ted Turner had intended as a series on tv- but was so impressed with it that he decided to fund it for the big screen) studied Joan for 6 years in France- Besson tho he lives in france obviously didn't study her. The only historical part of the film is laughable- Sony said that it was historical stating this fact- Besson had the exact amount of soldiers that Joan had. Thats nice- If your looking to numbers- But what about the records that are there for anyone to read.... was he too busy to read them?? If your going to make a movie on Joan- You better!! I was furious at this pathetic attempt to make a movie on Joan without studying her true character-along with the lies this movie portrayed. (ESPECIALLY the so called rape & killing of her sister making Joan want revenge-???He just changed the history books on Joan to suit himself - How many people now think that actually happened when it didn't!!)How dare he take someone so selfless and make her into a selfish, bloodthirsty lunatic. In many instances- she was seen in the battlefield crying over the enemy- Even held an Engish soldiers head in her lap, crying and comforting him as he died. Now I believe that this movie that Ron Maxwell will not only show us who Joan of arc was - but show us her true spirit- Her devotion and love for her country- And the mission she was called to. I e mailed him- ( I don't know him) and am impressed at the time and effort he's spent in making this movie on her.At this point it is still in post production- But on his site there is now a link on his Joan of Arc production- And for those who want to read his screen play- He has it on his web site for $29 ( Just saw it yesterday)and it looks as if its a go-as soon as everything is right. I really liked his review on the messenger too- He said it would take someone who was humble to make a film on her- someone who looked at everything she said and what people who knew her said of her- Its there for anyone to read- I have read her trial- And the testimonies of her friends- If I could - Why didn't Besson??? But the high point to this is that Maxwell DID, and that to me is in itself the reason why this movie will be the best movie done on her life. The reason? He's taking the time to do it right. heidi

BEAUTIFUL STORY
Subject: Anna and the King
Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2000
From: Laurie

I saw "Anna and the King" last night and was deeply moved. I was in tears at least 4 times. It is a beautiful story and the scenery is equally magnificent. There are lessons learned by Anna and the King about each others cultures. An important lesson that Anna learns is that she must respect the social workings and culture that she is in. She cannot act as she would in England without there being consequences ie she causes two lives to be taken through her attitude of cultural superiority. This is a movie that has it all a moral lesson, romance, action and beauty. BUT we need to remember that this is a STORY, as in fiction. In real life Anna was 30 years younger than King Mongkut and had little or no access to him. This does not detract from the beauty of the story. In our stories and dreams we can be what we aspire to be.
Laurie

My response: Thank you Laurie. I was deeply moved by this film too. I made sure my 3 teenage girls saw this film. Anna is a wonderful role model. Cheers to Jodie Foster!

ANOTHER PARALLEL
Subject: Daylight
Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2000
From: Doug

My wife and I saw this movie when it was released and enjoyed it very much. The chapel scene had one more thought-provoking moment for us that you did not mention in your writeup, but I'm sure you caught. After all but Sly and the lady get up the stairs, and he and she have to descend back down through the chapel to find some other way out, they swim past the now-submerged crucifix. The survivors could have met their demise in the water, but here Jesus took their place in the watery tomb. Pretty cool.
Great website. Keep up the good work!
God Bless,
Doug

My response: Wow! Great insight there Doug. Thank you!

RAPTURE
Subject: The Omega Code
Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000
From: Hitchplate

The rapture is nowhere found in the Bible! Rather a resurrection of the dead and the meeting of the saints, in the air with Christ at His one and only return. A side note to this is the resurrection is needed because no one is in heaven, but Jesus, Jo. 3:13, not even the patriarchs of the Bible, Heb. 11:39-40. Please read the Bible before you set yourself up as teachers.

My response: Respecting others you disagree with is a quality you should aquire. Insults are hurtful and not Christ-like. You are a beautiful human being designed by a loving God, making you someone worthy of respect. And so is everyone else, including us so called "teachers." The word "rapture" is not in the Bible -you are right. Most use the word to refer to a future Biblical event refered to as "meeting the Lord in the air." Some call the resurrection that you refer to as the rapture. Others believe in a secret rapture before the Second Coming -which you disagree with. And it is very okay to disagree. That's cool. But this does not make others less than you. In regard to heaven: You mention Hebrews 11: 39-40 which speaks of a future promise, but does not identify that as heaven. John 3:13, the other passage you refer to, is before the death on the cross when the curtain in the temple was torn in two (Mat 27:51). Because of the resurrection all believers have been "raised with up him and seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Eph 2:6),. In fact, to quote the book of Hebrews, as you did, it says, "you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering..." (Heb 12:22). I believe in a spiritual sense, I am in heaven now. I am curious, would you by chance be a Jehovah's Witness or a Seventh Day Adventist? Your idea of soul-sleeping is advocated by both those truth-seeking groups. For me "to be away from the body and to at home with the Lord" (2 Cor 5:8) means that a heavenly home is promised at death, as in Rev 5:11, 7:14, Acts 7:55-56. Thank you for the challenge. I always enjoy that.

GOOD GRIEF!
Subject: And God Said HA
Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000
From: kim

This movie is a must-see for everyone, and especially for anyone experiencing grief! Julia Sweeney just busts that little bubble of isolation, that "I'm the only one this has ever happened to" feeling. She does something that is lacking, even frowned upon - she SHARES what's happened to her. Even worse (better), she LAUGHS about it! And in doing so, she teaches us to overcome those pesky social obstacles for the sake of our health and sanity. We lose some of our humanity when we lose our sense of humor and ability to share our difficulties, which are, after all, universal. Who knows how many people can be helped when we reach out to them. I was.
My response: How right you are!
GOOD SCARY MOVIE
Subject: Stir of Echoes
Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000
From: kim

I have always loved good scary movies (with the exception of splatterpunk, that genre of gory sensationalistic flicks, Wes Cravenesque). Stir of Echoes is definitely a keeper. It's just a good solid ghost story, with good acting (Kevin Bacon is great as a working-class close-minded kind of guy), realistic and interesting dialogue, and a good mystery storyline that I found quite satisfying. The scary parts were good, and not overdone. I can't wait to see it again!

EXCITED TO SEE LOTR COME TO SCREEN
Subject:Lord of the Rings
Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2000
From: Laura

I have really enjoyed your Web site since I looked it up after reading about you in Christianity Today. I too am excited to see LOTR come to film (I'm a Sean Bean fan, so was pleased to see him cast as Boromir). LOTR has had a huge effect on my life since I first read it in my early teens. One interesting side note - I realized last year during the Monica Lewinsky scandal that one reason I had trouble respecting our president is that he seemed unwilling to sacrifice for any cause larger than himself, and that my value for such sacrifice came in part from admiring characters like Frodo and Aragorn. One small note, you have the names of volumes two and three reversed on your page - The Two Towers comes before Return of the King. God bless, Laura
My response: Yea, I wish that Monica thing had never happened. Situations like that really do bring out the character of a person. And thanks for the correction. I do make many errors and appreciate the help.

One line of dialogue will stick forever in my mind from this movie. Simon is in the corner being punished for humiliating the pastor during the service announcements, and for not apologizing to the pastor. The pastor comes in and asks Simon if he is thinking about what he as done. He replies he is thinking about God. The pastor asks Simon, "In the corner?" Simon replies, "Faith is not in a floor plan!" I love it. Faith can and will be found in any of the strange corners of our lives if we but look for it there.

My response: I had not caught that one. Very good. Thank you!

SCIENCE FICTION IS THE REALM OF THE SPIRIT
Subject:Gattaca
Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2000
From: "Jon Zuck" Dave,

I've meant to write about Gattaca for a long time. I truly regret I never saw it in the theater. I think I was turned off by the "Kraftwerk" look on the posters, but as they say, you can't judge a book by its cover! Gattaca is simply one of the most simple and powerful films ever made. I hits the heart, and hard. Ethan Hawke and Jude Law are brilliant. So is Uma Thurman as Irene, who is both a temptation and conscience figure together. She enables Vincent to see the potentials of the natural-born that even he, natural-born though he is, would never guess, like the advantage of having twelve fingers to play music which "perfect" people could never produce. And yet, even though she tells him her secret, can she be trusted? The variety and complexity of love is a persistent theme. Vincent loves (and hates) his brother Anton, and tears himself out of the family picture as he tears himself out of the family. He loves (and fears) Irene, and loves Jerome/Eugene with the complexity of being a friend to someone who at first bitterly rejects and friendship, and the even greater difficulty of receiving a gift so great (new identity) that it can never be repaid. Vincent and Jerome each are Christ figures to the other. Jerome gives Vincent his gift of blood and sacrificial death, and Vincent gives Jerome his Ascent and Resurrection into a new life. Pain is also a strong theme. Vincent, Jerome, Irene, and even Anton have tremendous pain, and deal with it differently. The portrayal of how they shape their lives in dealing with their suffering is profoundly moving without being sentimental. The music is perfect. The photography is astonishing. The yellows that tint the whole childhood sequence are reminiscent of the fading family snapshots with bad color. The ghastly white of Gattaca and the totally soulless atmosphere of the place is a omnipresent threat to Vincent's passionate dreams, pains and fears. Finally, blue in the beautiful swimming sequence suggests heavenly help, a dark night of the soul that meets God before He brings the dawn. Even the restrained use of nudity helps convey the spirituality behind Gattaca, much in the same way that medieval Christian art always illustrated the soul by simple nude figures. Here nudity means vulnerability, in shedding his "inferior" DNA, in opening himself to Irene, and finally, in showing his true strength and the depth of his pain ("I didn't save anything for the trip back!") to his brother. And the names: Vincent to me recalls Vincent Van Gogh, obessed with visions that no one else could appreciate. Jerome, the name Vincent assumes, suggests Jeremiah the weeping prophet. And as Jerome becomes Eugene, he weeps less for himself, and sees a purpose finally in his life. Eugene literally means "welborn," and is related to the word "eugenics." This is science-fiction without special effects to speak of. I find it reminiscent of the best of the greatest written science-fiction by sensitive authors such as Ray Bradbury and Orson Scott Card, a journey into the future about the full human condition, including the spirit. How sad this kind of science fiction almost never makes it to the screen! This film made me weep--for pain, for love, for hope, and for God! Once again, thanks so much for HJ!

My response: And thank you for your wonderful contribution to HJ!

FUNNIEST MOVIE IN AGES
Subject:DROP DEAD GORGEOUS
Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2000
Dave,
Had the opportunity to see Drop Dead Gorgeous recently, and what can I say? This is the funniest movie I've see in ages! It's a brilliant satire on just about everything, Minnesotans, small towns, beauty pageants, manipulating children, competition, violence, you name it. This is good, clean, laugh-your-head off fun as hasn't been seen since the wonderful comedies of Bill Murray in the 80's and early 90's, Groundhog Day, Stripes, and What About Bob? As a former Lutheran, I particularly loved the Lutheran laughs, especially the Lutheran Sisterhood Gun Club. Lutheran humor might be catching up to Catholic humor soon! At the very least, let's name Minnesota "The Humor Capital of America." Garrison Keilor, Jesse Ventura, and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Need I say more? Anyone reading this? Just rent it!
My response: Great observation!

From: ANTONE

By im a very spiritual person. i was led to believe that the blair witch project was true, but it wasnt. when i saw the articles on the internet discusing with heather and josh their roles in the bwp. my mouth dropped.i feel like a absolute fool falling for it.they discused how they was well looked after by crew members as the filmed the bwp.how it was they crew that made those sound at night in the woods. and how the icing on the cake that they feel they really got people is,when josh diappeared. heather is happily living in los angeles and so dose josh. and micheal lives in newyork. i feel like a totall fool. they had their 1999 interview in the villiage magazine its on the net. i donot i repeat. I DONOT think it was as funny as they thought it was. i wrote in expressing how i thought people was ignorant for thinking it was a movie. i appologize to all because they was right. the legend of the blair witch is true. but those three actors was not in danger or lost. And it was josh alive calling them. but they just dont know what forces they was playing with. those forces even though they had that crew with them could have truly harmed even killed them. look at what happened to the people from 1782 on down that vanish or was murdered by the force that is known as the blair witch. they lucked up when they made their movie and made it out of the black hills forest. because others died in and around them.

WONDERFUL MOVIE
Subject:The Last Temptation of Christ
Date: Fri, 04 Feb 2000
From: "Mary K."
This wonderful film by Martin Scorcese should not be shunned. I loved how Jesus was a real "man" in this movie. He had fears, doubts and feelings like all of us who struggle with dilemmas and temptations in our daily life.(Willem Dafoe was excellent in this role!) It was so fresh and wonderful to see a movie depicting Jesus this way unlike some previous portrayals where Jesus is all-knowing much too quickly.
One aspect of this film that I really enjoyed was the relationship between Jesus and Judas. Never before have I seen such love and a sense of brotherhood between these two characters. Every movie before this one made Judas out to be a terrible sneaky weasel. Yes, he was a traitor but by the end of this film you felt sorry for poor Judas! This Judas (Harvey Kietel was great too!) was a tell it like it is kind of man. It was touching to see the pain and sorrow in Judas's face and voice when Jesus tells Judas about his dream.
You were right when you wrote that this is a "What If" movie. If people could only see this. If only people were as open-minded and weren't afraid. The story of the video store owner (Tipton) is incredible! I can't believe that some Christians (supposed to be good and kind-hearted?) would carry on like this--making death threats! These people need to re-evaluate their values and ask themselves "Is this what a Christian does?" Fear of the unknown leaves you stagnant! See this movie--open your mind!
PS. The score (soundtrack) for this movie was created by Peter Gabriel. Excellent music!

My response: I do not believe I have heard from a non-believer who claims this movie enhanced their disbelief. I have heard from Christians who blast the film, however. Personally, I do not believe this film has hurt the cause of Christ.
BLASTPHEMY
Subject: Pokemon
Date:Fri, 4 Feb 2000
From: JAMES -Age 16
HOW DARE YOU COMPARE THIS GARBAGE TO JESUS CHRIST IN ANY WAY!!! SAYING THAT THIS OCCULT TEACHES ABOUT THE DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST IS EVIL. SATAN IS USING THE POKEMON MATERIAL TO INFLUENCE CHILDREN WHO KNOW NO BETTER TO GET INTO THE OCCULT, LIKE BAIT ON A FISHOOK! POKEMON IS THE MATERIAL OF SATAN HIMSELF AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GOD. SAYING THAT ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS IS LIKE JESUS IS BLASTPHEMEY. A CHARACTRER CAN BE "GOOD" , BUT NEVER CHRIST-LIKE. ALSO, HOW A PREACHER OF GOD'S WORD CAN COMMEND SUCH EVIL IS RIDICULOUS. GARBAGE LIKE THIS SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO AIR. ANOTHER THING-THE "MEWTWO" CHARACHTER IS NOTHING LIKE THE ANTICHRIST, BUT DRAWING CHILDREN IN TO THIS KIND OF WICKEDNESS IS INVITING HIS IDEOLOGY IN. THE RISE OF EVIL AND DEMONIC WORSHIP IS ONE OF THE SIGNS OF THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST. I WILL BE PRAYING FOR YOU.

My responses: Thank you for your prayers, I can, at least, appreciate that.
TOY STORY NUMBER ONE IN UNIVERSITY

From: Bryon

I am a 19 year old university student at a Christian University. This has probably been the most popular movie of the semester. I, myself have seen it three times. I absolutely loved it. Although I'm sure kid's love talking toy's and all, I feel most of this movie had joke's and things that only older people would get. As mentioned already, the Forrest Gump humor more than likely isn't going to be picked up by kid's. I think these are the kind of thing's that made this movie enjoyable for those tall enough to ride in go-carts by ourselves. The way the directors dropped things in the movie that we weren't expecting. For instance, I loved the way they brought the Old Chess guy into the movie. Or the way the New Buzz had a quality bonding experience with "dad" It was a cartoon, so what?! It was enjoyable! Just wanted to let you know it was ranked # 1 by Southwestern Assemblies of God University!
Bryon

My response: Everyone loves this film. It was #3 in 1999, 1 = Phantom, 2 = Sixth Sense, and 3 = Toy Story 2
WE ALL LEFT IN TEARS

From: Bryon

First, of all I would like to say that I must be a dumb redneck, because I picked up on none of this!! I am attending a seminary in order to be a Preacher. This does not mean that I know everything, as you will read in the following statement. I am just expressing what I got from the movie and the rest of your thougts!
Thanks!

I attended the Green Mile with four of my male friends and three of my female friends, all of whom attend a Christian University. Although everyone of us left with a tear in our eye (the guys even more than the girls), not a single one of us caught the relationship between this movie and the Bible. I guess I've felt that there's little hope for Hollywood in that sense. After reading all of these opinions about the movie from all these wonderful people, it has caused me to rethink the movie, (and Hollywood) I am blown away by all the connections between Jesus Christ's Character, not His person, and the movie. But one thing I've been thinking about is this. When walking out of the theatre, I couldn't help thinking about how the guards felt as if they had no choice in letting JC die, because of their own lives, and what might happen to them. How many times in our own lives do we "crucify" Christ because we are afraid of what this world might do to us? I've been put in these situations many of times. Most of the time, I stay strong and, unfortunately, some times I don't. That is something that they had to live with, just as Peter had to live with, and just as we have to live with. But Thankfully, we don't have to rely on a movie character who plays apart. We have the real deal who did give His life for all those times, we put our lives ahead of what matters most, JESUS!!!

ENTERTAINING, PROVOCATIVE, UPLIFTING
Subject: American Beauty review
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000
From: --Thomas

Dear Mr. Bruce,

Firstly, your site's great. Honestly, it's one of the most comprehensive I've seen. Now, for your review of "American Beauty." Boy, you got it all wrong. I don't know, maybe I'm "outside of the box" on this one, but I found "American Beauty" not only to be an endlessly entertaining film, but also a provocative and even uplifting motion picture. It's a poignant study of the search for happiness, yes, but ultimately, I believe, the characters find it for themselves in the end.

Look at it: All Lester ever wanted was Angela, the blond cheerleader and his daughter's best friend, and when he had his chance, he came to his senses when she finally revealed herself; she became a frightened child and he became a flustered adult. They found themselves.

When Lester is killed, Caroline, his wife, cries and screams in pain. She has, finally, become a human being; she has real emotions now.

Janie, the bewildered daughter, has found herself in Ricky Fitts, theat-first-creepy next door neighbor. She actually smiles when she is with him, and he is so devoid of skepticism and cynicism that he sees beauty in everything, even death.

Please write back with your thoughts.

--Thomas

My response: I love your insight. Right on, Thomas!

PEOPLE CAN CONFUSE SUPERMAN FOR JESUS
Subject: Superman Please explain...
Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000
From: kit

Dear Dave,

Please explain how you think non-believers will see the true character of Christ though "Superman". Contrary to your explanation of the relation between the two, I think it paints a unacurate account of how Christ was and is, or his teachings and miracles. I don't mean to sound contradicting but I've looked at your site and I'm concerned people who may be looking for the Christ of the bible on your site, will find a counterfeit representation of who he really is. The culture is not wisley looking for spiritual conformation, by showing movies that have hints of God in them, as you seem to portray in your "There is something Going on in our Culture" statement. This world is searching for the true nature of Christ to fill the void in there lives whether they know it or not. We should show them who Christ really is. I hope I havn't affended you, it was not my intent.
God Bless
My response: What? How small do you think God is? Do you think that if someone was seeking for bread that God would give them a stone? God honors honest seeking hearts and God will use the culture (and a host of other things) to help such a person on their spiritual quest. May God open your eyes to God's ever present nature, profound love and power. Read Acts 17:16-34 and Philip 4:8.
