ANGELIC SYMBOLS
Subject: prophecy
Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002
From: Dawn

Dear Sir,
I have been doing research on the fate of the Nephilim, the lives of the Gibborim, the destruction of Atlantis, and how God and Angels fit into all of this. At the moment I am studying the Kabbala and Angelic script, however I am drawing a blank when it comes to finding the symbols for the angels names. I have found the symbols for the four Arch Angels, all of which match the symbols displayed in the Prophecy trilogy, but I can not find any others. If you or anyone else happens to know of a website, or book that has this information in it i would truly appreciate your contacting me.
Thank you kindly
Sincerely,
Dawn

Response: I have not a clue, sorry. -David

Why was this in the movie or was it? Most of all I noticed in the scene where he ties up the people in store searching for the army of 12 monkeys if you look in the top left corner where there is a red writing or something red while hes moving the file cabinet there appears to be some sort of hanging or floating doll clown. look hard. Explain this to me. Why in the cover of the movie is the eye red???

Dear David.
According to the bible, wizardry and whichcraft and anything simulare is bad. not only bad, but real bad. But that makes me wounder, what is this "polecy" based on? Jesus walked on water, cured the cripled, and even awakend the DEAD! These actions are described as mirecals in the bible. So why is it a mortal sin for a man, any man, to try to awaken sutch powers whitin himself so that he can help his loved ones? I'm pretty sure that you have been in a situasion where you have prayed and prayed for hours, asking God to take care or save the life of someone you love who has a desise or in some other way is in dire straits. Now, what I would like to know is, if I may ask, what EXACTLY makes you a good man when you use a cross and the name of Jesus as a symbol in order to do this, but if I choose to do the same, only whit a bag of oceansalt and my own name/ansectors name instead of a cross and the name of jesus, I'm the most horrible and evil person on earth, and I should be burned alive in good, old Dark-age fasion?
REALLY OPENED MY EYES
Subject: Jesus Mini Series

From: Elizabeth
I watched the CBS broadcast of Jesus and it really turned my life around. While I was already a believer in Jesus , this movie really opened my eyes as to how much pain Jesus endured with the crucifiction, how so many turned against him, and really made me understand how so many of us have really forgotten the true word of Christ. And how alot of people in the world today have simply forgotten how to love one another even our enemies. So I would like to say thank you CBS and the crew of the movie you have trully renewed my faith STRONGLY. And I really liked the edited version of Jesus in our time...we could only dream to be so lucky.

INFO ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF THOMAS
Subject: Stigmata
Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2002
From: ?

I was reading your bulliten board and wanted to provide a source for the English text of the Gospel of Thomas. As I'm sure you know, the gospel is published in numerous books of early Christian texts, but there is an especially good collection from Bart Ehrman (I believe that I've spelled his name correctly) which includes a copy of Thomas' gospel. When I first saw the movie (Stigmata) in the theaters, I loved it right up until the very end when they implied that the gospel imagined in the movie is, in fact, the Gospel of Thomas. Clearly, there are some very important factual differences. I was studying theology at the time of its release and the first thing I did after I saw it was to go home and reread the gospel very carefully. The number one difference that people seem to ignore is the Gospel of Thomas was not, in fact, written in Aramaic. I mean, aside from the clearly gnostic overtones and heretical statements about women/salvation etc., some fairly basic facts have been changed. Clearly the Gospel of Thomas was not written by Jesus Himself if it is not in Aramaic. It is also written in the third person (Jesus said "...) and why would Jesus have begun his own gospel with the words "Jesus said" ? I think that people don't realize there were any more than just the three versions of the gospel story at the time of canonization. It's much easier to believe that the ones we have are the only ones there ever were. I seem to have gone off on somewhat of a tangent, but I'm sure you're used to that by now. In short, I wish the filmmakers hadn't tried to make the movie a religious statement with buzzwords like "heresy" and "refusal to aknowledge" and simply let the film stand on its own as a piece of art. I hope that this reference helps (it really is a wonderful collection from a brilliant theologian). Thanks for your time,

MATRIX AS QUMRANIC TEXT
Subject: Matrix
Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2002
From: Samuel

This is late coming, I know. But I'm still dealing with the ramifications of The Matrix as a religous movie, and I've only recently found your site. (I thought I was a nut for seeing relgion in film!)

There has been an on-going debate concerning who, exactly, is the Christ figure in The Matrix. I'm currently working on a paper over exactly this subject. I'd like to point out an idea I working with for the paper, namely that both Neo AND Morpheus are the messiah figures in the film.

First let me designate a difference between ideas of messiah and Christ. Messianism, not matter how loosely borrowed by the Christian West, is a decidedly Jewish concept; the Greek translation Christos is not simply a rewording--it involves a transition of ideas from Jewish to Hellenistic Western thought. But I won't go into that in too great a detail. The point is, I am dealing with the messiah imagery in The Matrix; that is, I believe the savior figures in this film are not a redemptive Western Christ but a Jewish warrior king, a figure who will fight. The Jesus parallels are primarily for the comfort of the Christian-dominated Western audience the film was written for.

That said, I've been looking at Jewish concepts of the messiah through their history, and I've discovered an idea that works beautifully as a synthesis of the arguments over whether Neo or Morpheus was the true messiah figure in the film. In the Qumranic texts (i.e. the Dead Sea Scrolls) written just prior to Jesus's life, the concept of messiah is split between the ancient Davidic warrior (Neo) and the newer cry for spiritual guidance in the form of a priestly messiah (Morpheus). Both were necessary to the salvation/liberation of Zion, and so both are necessary to the defeat of and regaining of control over the Matrix. It is, perhaps, no accident that both Neo and Morpheus seem to represent the messiah; neither is it accident that Morpheus is the philosopher/spiritual guide for Neo while Neo is the one (the One?) who can take the beatings from and physically defeat the agents.

I'm still hashing out the details, of course, and this is all only interpretation. While the writers/directors of the film are certainly brilliant, I would never commit the intentional fallacy of assuming they planned all this in the contruction of their film. Still, the idea fascinates me, and I thought I's share my views with your audience.

Thanks for the web site. Incidentally, as much as you appear to know about other faiths, I wonder if you might open a posting like Hollywood Buddha, or Hollywood Taoist, or Hollywood Black Elk, something like that. I would love to explore the eastern metaphysical and Buddhist/Hindu concepts in The Matrix in more detail, because certainly they are there Peace...

BROOKLYN BABYLON REVIEW

From: Gettye Israel

As a Black woman- who is also a Hebrew- I was totally insulted by the premise of this purported movie. This was nothing more than Hollywood's continual perpetuation of the "Negro" man in pursuit of the white female, and religion was just an added twist.

Yet, we are suppose to think this movie was progressive and challenging. Why is it considered progressive for a black male and white female to be intimately involved? This is the same old tired image of inter-racial relationships being depicted in film, television, advertisments, and too often in real life. There was nothing unique in this story, nothing we haven't seen many times before.

When will the Black female ever be the subject of an inter-racial relationship? Why is it that white men are absolutely never shown pursuing Black women or expressing the slightest interest in them? White men control all the major institutions in the Western world, namely the U.S.; however, he is consistently shown with the white woman. The white male is never depicted intimately with the Black female because Hollywood does not want to disrespect and insult it white female market. However, it has no regards for Black women's feelings.

This pitiful portrayal of inter-racial "love" props up the white female as a model of femininity and sensuality. In other words, a man, particularly a Black man, will give up family, friends, finance and even his life in the pursuit of a white woman.

Finally, Sheba was a woman of African descent; she was not a pale face European.
Tariq Trotter wears locks and professes to be African-centered but obviously he is a liar and a perpetrator.

I came across this page on accident, but it caght my eye, so I felt the need to stop by and post my comments. I don't know where you guys got God from! The movie has nothing to do with God in the inner-city. The movie shows strength of character, and portrays the lives of several different people. Not once do we see one of them pray or ask for God's help. Now, as someone who lives in the "ghetto", I take offense to how you describe the whole situation. The 'hood is a very misunderstood place, and nobody can explain or understand it until they live in the 'hood, and they spend a few days in the life I've lived since I was born. All this "white girl meets black boy" isn't really true. You know, it is 2002, and yet you guys act like white gurl meets black boy has never occured before! I happened to be an Asian, Latina, Caucasian, and Black mix, with my mother being 1/4 Venezuelan, 1/4 Costa Rican, 1/4 Mexican, and 1/4 Fillipina, while my father was 1/4 Black, and 3/4 Caucasian. Growing up, when i dated black or Hispanic men, nobody gave me any grief, and it was no big deal. Interracial dating/marriage has been going on for years, yet since thsi movie came out, everyone acts as though it's the newest thing to ever happen, and it gets everyone thinking. But, I just want to thank you for sharing your views on this whole movie, and it's always nice to hear what other people think, and also very refreshing. A RETROSPECT
Subject: Last Temptation of Christ
Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002
From: Justin

<_E-mail > I just recently viewed this film and I really did not understand why everyone considered it blasphemous. The movie never claimed to be anything but a work of fiction. It never once said "this is the truth about Christ" or anything of that sort. And yet all the "christians" said it was evil and anyone who watched it was going to hell. My first question would be how do you go to hell just for watching a movie? I always thought that you went to hell if you did not accept Christ, but I guess I am not a theology scholar, so what would I know. Upon my viewing of this film I did realize there were some errors, but not any errors involving Jesus as a homosexual. (Who came up with that idea anyways?) I liked the "what if" ideas the film gave. I liked how it portrayed Jesus struggling with his calling and trying to understand it. I think it really showed the human side of Christ in a new light. Of course it was not entirely accurate, but then again it never claimed to be. The ending scene on the cross really gave a triumphant ending , and showed how Christ was willing to die for us. It made me see His love for me. The "last temptation" scenes were fun to watch, because I think it showed that Christ perhaps could have lead a normal life with marriage and family, but yet at such a great cost! The film also portrayed Satan very well. We saw a Satan ,not as an evil, scary looking being, but as an innocent looking child. I think that really shows the idea of the "angel of light" very well. Overall I liked the movie, I did however have a few problems with it. I did not like the John the Baptist scene, the whole dancing naked women thing was a little too weird for me. Maybe someone could help me understand that one?? Also I think maybe the film portrayed Jesus as maybe being too human. It seemed at some points of the film it showed Christ as having no idea what was going on as far as His ministry was concerned. But maybe I looked at it wrong, I am very open to other opinions. (as I hope you can tell) I do challenge christians to watch this movie, and watch it with an open mind. I have seen many posts about this movie, and have seen many people who have no idea of what they are talking about. Hence back to the whole gay Jesus thing. I would really like to know why people believe everything they hear. On a side note to those who post to this site rebuking everyone and trying to hurt David's ministry: Grow up. What does arguing and sending hate mail solve? What does it do to our witness? I have seen many people post on this site who admit they are unsaved. What kind of message are we sending to them when we argue and pick fights? I think maybe some soul searching is in order. Paul said all things are permissable ,but not all things are profitable. Argueing is of course permissable, but it gets us nowhere. Lets learn to love. Thats what Jesus would say to us. Feel free to contact me (in love) if you have any thoughts. Thank you David for such a wonderful site, may God continue to bless your ministry. Please post my email address.

THOUGHTS ON JESUS AS GOD
Subject: Mithras
Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002
From: Greg

I can agree with the idea that it was unclear what the status was. As you quote in John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." It is clearly stated or at the very least implied that Jesus and God are the same. There are a number of other verses which share this idea. Namely:

Jn.1:14
"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."

Jn.8:58
"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am."

Jn.10:30-31
"I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him."

Jn.10:38-39
"The Father is in me, and I in him. Therefore they sought again to take him."

Jn.20:28
"And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God."

Even outside the book of John, there are similar statements:

Col.2:8-9
"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."

Titus 2:13
"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ."

Phil.2:6
" Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God."

Heb.1:8
"But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom."

Rev.1:17
"Fear not; I am the first and the last."

Rev.22:13
"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last."

However these versus could definitely cause one to wonder whether or not Jesus is the same as God

Jn.8:40
"But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God."

Jn.14:28
"My Father is greater than I."

Acts 17:31
"Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead."

1 Cor.11:3
"The head of Christ is God."

Col.3:1
"Christ sitteth on the right hand of God."

Talk about sitting beside yourself! I guess if anyone can pull that off...

1 Tim.2:5
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."

Any thoughts?
-Greg

I Really liked this movie and I definetly disagree with Joyce who wrote "THE WIMP" article. This movie took a lot of time to create and comparing with the other Joan of Arc movies, this is the best. I don't care what anyone else says because she played a great leadership role and was very fit for the character. Besides, Joyce, how would you know. You would've had to go back in time to know what shhe was REALLY like. So for what we know of her now she did GREAT!! With great religion and a good message I rate this a * * * * * out of five stars.

OLD LEGEND WITH A NEW TWIST
Subject: Dracula_2000

From: Mark

An ex-pastor of mine once told me, "You're too wordly for Christians and too Christian for the world." For a long time, I felt caught between the two, until I finally pulled myself out of the snare of legalism and realized that so many things conservative believers say are sinful really are not sinful at all, but simply matters of personal choice, like the whole "meat offered unto idols" dilemma the Apostle Paul talked about.

This concept applies to movies, and in particular, DRACULA 2000. The Christianity in this film is not only blatant, but rather powerful as well. Sure, I'm a horror movie fan, so I enjoyed watching the spurting blood, the decapitations, the grisly kills...but I'm also a Christian, and I enjoyed the theme of redemption and forgiveness, which, naysayers be damned, this film is all about. After all, in the end, Judas Iscariot a.k.a. Dracula realizes that the only way to obtain peace is to turn to the One he betrayed. Is that evil? I think not, and I don't believe that God is offended by a film like this (or most films, for that matter).

But if you find the violence, sexuality, and violence of a film like this to be offensive, then fine, don't watch it. But just because you don't want to eat meat "offered unto idols" doesn't make it wrong for me to sit down at the table and chow down.

Dear David:
The "Hollywood Jesus" site is great! Lots of places to go, lots of things to see! The excitement of Hollywood is there -- and so are sane and ethical reviews, too!

I have looked for some movies I'd like to see reviewed -- but, in your wonderfully long, and comprehensive list, I don't see these particular movies. It's important to have older movies, too, I think, becasue they are out on Video Casette and DVD.

Perhaps a new feature of "Hollywood Jesus" could be where people request movies they'd like to see reviewed. Then, the most popular requested movies COULD be reviewed.

My own list, at present, consists of these movies:

  FOCUS
  Roman Holiday
  Europa, Europa
Gosford Park (Spelling may be wrong here)
  Alien Nation

If I think of any more, I'll send another E-mail, for your consideration.

Thanks again for a geat site!!!!!!! I hope you will consider both reviewing my choices, above, and also starting a "wish list" of movies those who visit the site wish to see reviewed.

NARROWNESS
Subject: Plesantville
Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002
From: "corey sax"

David,
After watching Pleasentville, I searched the net for any sites related to the movie and stumbled across "hollywood jesus.com". I read your intereptation of the film and was sadly disapointed in the narrowness of your scope of understanding the message of the director.

In the movie after david and his sister feel alienated by a problem ridden world, they use TV as an escape from truth. They become powerless in the mindset they adopt, thus limiting the scope of their intellegence and giving others the authority to decide how they should view reality and react to it, until they go to pleasentville and learn how to create (rearranging things we see in reality). Leaving the mythical garden of eden is not "the fall of man" but instead the opening of mans eyes to the fact that nature cannot be created or destroyed (The axiom that existence exists ie the law of identity). Man's volition is to percieve or evade reality.

In the movie david and his sister learn this, they start to perceive reality, discovering the properties of the metaphyiscally given. Only through this knowledge can man survive; by rearranging the things he sees in nature to fit his needs. Creation does not imply the power to bring something into existence from nothingness, but an arragement of natural elements that has never been before.

To evade these priniples is to engage in a futile extempt to negate existance; David and his sister in the 90's feel that some other force created the world, its problems, and the people in it. They discover their identity through understanding that they can change the things in the world to suit their needs.

Your idea of the world being evil, and that people are sinners goes against reality. The idea that we cannot change ourselves, but that the metaphyical can be changed by some magical force ie god is flawed. In reality it is the metaphysical that cannot be changed and you and I that can. If men are sinners then reason cannot exist, but if reason does not exist then hoe do you know men are sinners. Religion denies the metaphysical and the logical in place for menial fanatasy.

"Think it over. Consider the subject, check your premises, check past history and find out whether it is true that man can never be free. It isn't because man has been free. Find out what made it possible. See for yourself. And then if you are rationally convinced, we can save the world together. We still have time. Let your mind and love of existence decide."
Thank you
Corey Sax

Response: There is evil in the world, consider 9/11. And no one is perfect, we all error (sin). So, it stands to "reason" the humans are sinners. And God does change things. That is reality. -David

I have only just seen this movie so am probably a bit late for the bulletin board!! But I just had to say this is one of the most offensive and racist movies I have ever seen. What a heap of rubbish. The classic American theme of "any justice outside our own is inferior" was pathetic - from a country that commits some of the worst atrocities and still enforces the death penalty. The Malaysians were portrayed as a bunch of ignorant, unfeeling animals which is simply untrue and unfair. As for Lewis the poor nature-loving, God-fearing boy sentenced to death by the ruthless Malaysians - you didn't even see enough of his character to be able to form any opinion on him. The clever twist of the moral dilemma?? Sheriff's character was an oafish dullard who didn't seem to have any morality till he got laid by the lawyer/sister/joke of a character Beth.

I could rant for pages on this appalling excuse for a film but won't waste anymore of anyone's time. Quite simply the worst movie I have EVER seen. An absolute disgrace. I noticed that it wasn't filmed anyway on location in Malaysia. I certainly wouldn't have let them anywhere near the place if I had been the relevant authorities.

It goes through real life situations and the message is awesome. I can't recomend this enough. If you have non-christian friends and you guys want to watch a fun and energetic movie then get this. I think it is a great way to show that God and Christ aren't all stuffy and up tight. I think Jesus most definatly plays extreme sports. Because of when he lived he was most definatly considered extreme for the new truths he brought to his people. Those truths were to extreme for some and they rejected it. Anyways that is what I have to say. God Bless everyone. And never think God doesn't like us to have fun. ^_^

Hi David,
Love the site. It is my favorite source for movies! But I haven't seen anything on my favorite actor's new movie, Matthew McConaughey(a fellow Texan), in Frailty also starring Bill Paxton. I ran across this film in a Matthew Fan Club and found the website for the film www.frailtythefilm.com and also know that it comes out April 5th. But other than the fact that the tagline says "In God's Hands" I don't know much more than that. Any more info would be deeply appreciated as I pride myself being on the "in" with Matthew's films, especially considering the content I assume is in the film, I'll continually check back at hollywoodjesus.
Thanks,
John Honno

DID NOT GET AWARD

Its strange that Denzel Washington, didn't get the award for his part in this film, I saw it because I am a Denzel fan but he out did himself in this role,. .Something is wrong with the people who vote who the best actor is because he proved in this role that he is the BEST.....oh well, I guess the old saying is true.......The best man, doesn't always win.. and that is really sad....but, we the people who go to movies know he should have won ,....it just proves once again that the people who get to vote are all air heads....I hope you print this but if you dont,...its ok,.....I will still remain a Denzel fan and hope some day those air heads open their eyes.......As Denzel once said........He did the work, He should have the prize.......We love him with or without the award, but fair is fair everywhere except in Hollywood. You are an eternal living being ( consciousness ) created in unconditional Love by God,.You are a spirit living in a body, a being of light, you are a being of energy and energy never die's--it just changes form.......

First off, David, thank you for running an amazing website. I truly enjoy the perspectives that your site offers on both pop and arthouse flicks.

With regards to "A Beautiful Mind", I think that consumers of the media tend to forget that the movie they are viewing is not reality, merely one person's preferred view of reality, at best. The movie cannot be seen with the idea that it is a documentary of John Nash's life, nor should it be. While they may find the glorifying of a man's life apocraphyl, I think they would be better served if they looked at the story being presented as just that: a story, rather than comparing and contrasting it to factual events.
I very much resonate with Ms. Wierstra's comments. The most refreshing thing about the movie was seeing a spouse who stood by their counterpart through all of it, "for better or for worse". Too often we see marriages splitting up due to stress of one form or another, and we excuse it as being acceptable due to X, Y, or Z. If A Beautiful Mind presented an unreal, fantastical view of the truth, is there really a better fantasy than Unceasing Love?

As to your use of RealVideo for commentary, my own access to internet limits me to not having audio ability (work or library). Your comments are insightful and interesting, I would hate to not be able to enjoy your site due to my internet limitations. Perhaps a transcript could be provided, or perhaps limiting the RealVid choices to being supplimentary, rather than a replacement, for you usual reviews?
Thanks again for running an interesting and wonderful site,
JP

Rush Hour 2 has to be the most excellent film i have ever watched!! A must see for all of those who haven't! Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan do an excellent job in this film. Also with the most gorgeous woman on earth Ziyi Zhang who plays the evil Hu Li. I wont give too much away but "Carter" is always getting "Lee" into mischief!!!!

CLASSICS?
Subject: "Classic" Movies

From: Susan Allen

My youth groups enjoy watching "classic" movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail and several of the James Bond movies (usually from the Sean Connery era.) I think you should put some of these movies on your website. I would enjoy hearing what your reviewers would have to say about them! Thanks! (By the way, I think your site is wonderful!)
