DIFFERENT INTOLLERANCE
Subject: Hollywood Jesus Newsletter # 29
Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001
From: Malisa

David,
I have seen the same intollerance but in a different way. I have seen an attitude coming from some Christian fundamentalists that says, we love our God in America and if you don't like it, go back where you came from. They are trying to use a tension between Islam and Christianity to purge others with non-Christian beliefs from our home soil. What they miss, which seems terribly obvious, is how much their thinking is like that of terrorists. Just like the Jews who were dissapointed in Jesus because he did not lead them in a military triumph over the Romans, these Christian fundamentalists seem to want to use political activities to create advantages for God's kingdom. But we know that Jesus taught us that God's work is done in the hearts of individuals, person to person, and His plan is not to further His purposes through large-scale political posturing.

The way our politicans throw around "God bless America" annoyed me during the Bush I term and now annoys me again during the Bush II era. What is the implication there? Do we not want God to bless our whole world? Does this statement imply God bless our country but no one else's? Are our political leaders so close to God's word and so filled with His spirit that they are comfortable standing before the world and saying that God has given his overt approval on all decisions that leader's government has made? That they would be that confident of God's approval seems unlikely to me. It's sad that such a wonderful phrase seems to carry with it, especially now, undertones of racisim and bigotry.

Am I way off base here? Have you ever read the magazine the World? It carries these kinds of ideas, and also is not very well written.
Malisa

Response: World magazine scares me. I find it very hard to read. I will never forget their attack on the NIV inclusive Bible -it was very unfair. In terms of the use of "God" in political statements --very tricky. But, I think it is fair to say that God did not like the evil that happened to the thousands of innocent people in the WTC 9-11. And, I think it is fair to say "God bless America", as long as one can also say "God bless the world." "For God so loved the world that He gave..." -David

YA GOTTA GET REAL
Subject: Shrek
Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001
From: "Dave Lamb"

Yo brother dave.
i love Jesus just as much as you do, but man...you gotta be real. Shreck has nothing to do with Jesus. Sure, i can see how we can see Him in everything but your interpretation of this movie is unbased. Now, I loved how you made the point that we need to love people for their inside and not judge them based on their outside. You used the phrase, the "magic of truth" and then compared her to the crucified savior. Yo, magic isnt what it's all about...Jesus doesnt need magic to show truth and comparing her to the savior...hmm...thats mildly drastic. But yo, know that i do love your passion in showing other's Christ's love.
Be blessed brother.

THE TRUTH HOUR: AMERICAS HATE THE TRUTH AND EMBRACE THE LIE!
Subject: Newsletter_29_Non_Christian
Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001
From: "Samuel Ewing"

Hello,
I've communicated before. I'm a non-Christian for so many reasons that I wouldn't burden you with listing them. I really don't care that someone took a passage from the Bible and used it for whatever purpose. I don't think or feel that that is where the concern really should be. I read someone's opinion on your website who was from another country concerning the United States' activities abroad. The documentation they presented was irrefutable concerning this countries activities in other countries. I agree with that opinion.

This country's government has and is participating in all sorts of foul and disgusting acts of violence against other people. I was a Marine Security Guard at two embassies during the Iranian Crisis:

a. I was acutely aware that a butcher like the Shah of Iran was supported by the U.S.and when his usefulness was over it allowed another extremist like Khomeini to come to power.

b. I was aware that the U.S. vetoed sanctions against South Africa for its horrific treatment enslavement and slaughter of Africans so that it could obtain the rare metals it needed from African soil to operate its fighter planes.

c. I was aware that the U.S. HAD BROKEN A TREATY with Argentina concerning the Falklands in favor of supporting Britain's claim of the Falklands. How much more obviously imperialistic can a nation get? The Falkland Islands are practically right next to Argentina; Britain on the other side of the globe. How does it have a right to the islands.

d. I was aware that every time women want men to buy them expensive gems, including diamonds; African men and even children are killed or maimed in large numbers to get the righteous Americans these nice glittery things. South Africa is one among such exploited African countries where this takes place.

e. I'm aware that Israel and White South Africa ( called Saud Afrika) as well as the United States have been in bed with each other in exploiting Africa (Eurocentric Imperialist Colonialism is alive and well), various tropical islands such as Port Louis Mauritius. I was stationed on that island, observing that the arrogant Nazi-like Afrikaner ran the island politically and economically. The U.S government, U.S. business men, Afrikaners ( British, Norwegian, Dutch, French, German, and Israel), and friends keep the majority of the population in horrible poverty. A middle class person on this island was someone who made $100.00 a month. Arikaners will tell you that they have dual and triple citizenship so if things go bad for them in the country where they are oppressing people they can always flee to the U.S. or go back to Europe.

f. I saw how teenage and young adult Afrikaners spent their days playing games on the beach, drinking, sexual escapades, and dancing themselves into oblivion, receiving cars and other expensive indulgences from their wealthy parents, they don't go to school because they don't have to, and they have no ambition to achieve anything. They told me they don't have to work or study because mommy and daddy were rich, they would inherit the business and wealth; and the cycle of Eurocentric arrogance would continue. The new nobility and decadent bourgeise. I observed how powerful Christian church organizations, the Catholic church, various ambassadors, and Western governments work together to keep people subjugated and poor; while they profit by it. I observed how this same elite even exploits attractive women of the poor minorities for their sexual escapades. As a military person I observed that the military is little more than "muscle" for the U.S. and Europe.I unfortunately met the daughter of the British ambassador on my first day on Mauritius and she was introduced to me. Her greeting to me was to call me a "Nigger." "I can't believe you let niggers live with you and wear the same uniform!!" As I said I was a Marine Security Guard for the U.S. government. Of course that was normal. The French spat on me and dared me to fight them. I offered to cause them great pain and they cowered in fear like the moral degenerates they were. Quite a few Afrikaners are former Rhodesian mercenaries and descendants of Nazis. Yes the old guard of the Nazi Party is wealthy and going strong under various guises. The U.S. government knows this. Their in bed with them. It's not a secret except to the weak, stupid, ignorant American citizen. I say the majority in the U.S. WHO HAVE THE POWER TO STOP THIS RACIST OPPRESSON really don't give a screaming eagle. After all why should they care about changing a system that has benefitted them as well?

h. It is quite clear to me that Western Civilization is always working to rule this planet by hook or by crook, more likely the latter= military, political, and cultural conquest. Notice I'm not mentioning Osama Bin Laden because if this country had not been in bed with him militarily and business wise, like a whore who knows if things would have been better. Furthermore, this country is in business with SAUDI ARABIA, who has supported Bin Laden - while at the same time rebuking him - while at the same time acting reluctant to support this country etc. etc. etc. U.S.A, DON'T CHANGE NOW! BE CONSISTENT AS A WHORE. In this country there is an expression used to describe American culture by certain individuals in the African American community. I think it is quite appropriate: "The United Snakes Of America."

i. *As a person who isn't Christian I don't care about the issue of whether a deity is going to destroy this country. What everyone should care about is their contribution to the destruction of this country by not holding the elite responsible for the havoc they commit in other countries. I'm not buying that Americans didn't know how hated they are, or their too busy to know or care about the suffering that is going on on the majority of this planet moment by moment. No excuse can be acceptable. Perhaps now this country is getting an inkling that it is not as Heroic, Ethical, and Noble as it deludes itself into believing; if that is a god at work; I say great! This country is in need of a TRUTH HOUR TODAY! RIGHT NOW! America is not the Chosen People of any god that it should have carte-blanche to bring suffering and pain to the weak and poor within its borders or abroad.

j. I'm aware that because this country has and does support war criminals like Saddam Hussein the leaders of the Middle East in the oppressed areas see no need to lift their citizens out of ignorance and poverty. Its easier to indoctrinate people into being terrorist when they are hungry, angry, afraid to rebel against their leaders and needing someone to vent against. And because they know this country only by what it sees on the few tvs they have should it be surprising that they would resent the affluence and self-indulgence of America? I 'm totally against what happened in New York. It was evil, however the American people need to get their heads out their assets and look at how this country has contributed to its own situations. Lives were needlessly lost in New York because of the usual power-brokering that goes on too often. As usual there will be memorials, congratulations for defeating the enemy, reaffirmations of the American Way (we all know that truth and justice are not part of this), certain people will be trying to get re-elected if this turns out well, like in previous wars in the last 30 years it will just begin to dawn on them that while they were distracted by the war the economy is gone down to ruin, instead of "Praise Jesus, we're going to war!", it will be "Praise Jesus! We whipped them! We showed them!", the American people will be stuck with the bill, the majority will go back to "whipping" on those citizens who are not "on their level" as usual, and blissful ignorance and American self-glorification will reign once again. America the Deus & Dea Ex Machina is still in charge.

The MORAL IMPERATIVE LIKE TRUTH AND JUSTICE WILL BE SENT KICKING AND SCREAMING OUT SIGHT OUT OF MIND. HAIL CAESAR! HAIL THE AMERICAN WAY! AMERICAN IMPERATOR-IMPERATRIX SUPREME! SON AND DAUGHTER OF GOD! DOMINUS! HAIL VICTORY AND AMERICA IMPERIOUS REX! HAIL CAESAR! HAIL THE EMPIRE, GLORIOUS VICTORY!
Samuel Ewing,
SARASWATI@prodigy.net

P.S. OH! By the way, not only is harming people physically a form of violence (terrorism); but lying, deceiving, keeping people in ignorance and poverty, racism, imperialism, treachery, trickery and exploitation are forms of violence too! Lest we all forget.

Response: You are right America is not the chosen people of some diety. I would say all people are. God loves all the world -even America, including you and such a defective person as I. In terms of America, be thankful that this is a country where your anti-American words can be published. America is not perfect, but it has great freedoms that well worth defending. -David

SEPT 11 -AN ACT OF JUDGEMENT
Subject: Newsletter_29_God_Is_Judging
Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2001
From: "John Pavelko"

I have never, ever considered myself in the same camp with Falwell yet I agree that Sept 11 was indeed an act of judgment. In your shock over this possibility how do you avoid the implications of Habbakkuk, or even John the Baptist message that a winnowing fork is in his hand? To limit either just to the historical nation of Israel distorts Paul's image of the Church as the New Israel.

The question that is than raised why? To answer the question I look to the symbols of the buildings struck. The WTC represents Western materialism and the Pentagon, military power. America and even, or should I say especially the Church relies on both more than it relies on its God. Why did God act in judgment upon America, for its idolatry.

If you remain uncomfortable with this idea, then you must answer why wouldn't God judge America. In your shock over the possibility you fail to provide an rebuttal.

Before I end, however, let me say that I am not apart of the pre-trib, pre-mil camp that seems to revel in the coming judgment upon America because they believe that they will escape in the nick of time. We are very close to an economic, political and environmental catastrophe and I am not looking forward to having to maintain a witness of hope amongst the chaos. Yet, I do know that it is during such times that people do come to faith and the Church becomes stronger as it passes through the refiner's fire.
John H. Pavelko
Wixom, MI

Response: Thanks John for your thoughts. America is strong, and I do not believe that it is "very close to an economic, political and environmental catastrophe." Please read your words again one year from now. This is a passing event, like so many others that happen from time to time since the beginning of history. The American idea of freedom is having a world wide impact. I am sorry that you feel America needs a God that would kill thousands of everyday innocent people to because of "idolatry" on the part of other Americans. What kind of God is that? And how is it that you have such insight into God that you know that the WTC 9-11 terrorist attack is God's judgment for "idolatry." Did God speak this to you? Did God write this on your bedroom wall? To me it is dangerous to speak for God in the way you are. I would rather focus on "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, because you are with me." -David

DISAGREE
Subject: Newsletter_29 Revising John 3:16
Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001
From: TOM Peck

Dear Bruce,
I am not going to "cancel" my subscription to your newsletter, but I am going to disagree with you on a number of items.

First, as Christians, we are called to "think Biblically". This means developing a systematic theology and not just a devotional one. Christ came both to save and condemn the world and to focus on only one and not the other is like walking on only one leg.

I agree that Mr. Falwell's and Mr. Robertson's comments were poorly timed but, Scripturally, they have some (note I said some) validity. God is the one who judges and has the sovereign to do as He Wills. God allows "bad things" for any number of reasons: to punish, to cleanse, to purify, to build character, to bring about repentance, to bring focus to Him. In many ways the events of 9-11 have done all that to the American Psyche.

But the true gist of your article was an argument that we should be more loving to others. This is a fact. Being "unloving" is part of our sin nature. I found it most disconcerting that you chose to obliterate the names of those you found whose actions were distasteful (Falafel, Doubloons) while calling on us to be more respectful. This is something you should think about. The other aspect that concerned me is this idea that criticism is tantamount to intolerance. No where, from what I have read, has Mr. Falwell or Mr. Robertson indicated that God now "hates" America, yet because they criticize the culture for turning from God, this implies hate?

As a parent sometimes I have to discipline my children. It might be a grounding, a time out, a spanking, a fine, or simply saying "no". Does this mean I "hate" my children because I punish? Of course not, so why would we not give God the same lea way.

As a Christian, we know that it is not deeds or actions that bring salvation, but instead this is a work of God. Do not get caught up in the world's idea that good men cannot do bad or that bad men cannot do good. God defines goodness, not us.

Major Guliani wept for the police and firemen who died that terrible day but supports the murder of children in the womb. How many people in the Trade Center were cheating on their spouse, stealing money from their companies, back-stabbing co-workers, yet to others were dedicated employees, loving spouses, little league coaches, church members.

There is some great need in the Fundamental Evangelicals to pretend to be prophets and that is why they often put their collective feet in their mouth with outrageous and albeit stupid remarks. Fundamentals, by the way, believe in the inerrancy of Scripture (not necessarily a translation of the same) and that the principals set forth in the Bible are absolute Truths. The problem we run into is that too many of my Fundamental brothers mix culture with Scripture (I always ask them why they wear ties to church, shouldn't they be wearing togas?)

God set out rules for our conduct as a way to show our love for Him. He told us to take off the view of the world and put on the eyes of God, which He showed through the Bible. He requires us to be honest, to love others, to live lives of good repute and to encourage and promote concepts like justice and good. We are to love others more than ourselves, be understanding, but be firm for Him.

We must also balance the fact that without Christ, people go to hell, a message most non-believers really don't want to hear (too negative), but it is one that must be heard. It is not about death but eternal separation.

The problem is how much do we water that concept down in our attempt to be tolerent of others and not wanting to "offend" others. I say yes, we should love others, but we do need to find opportunities to tell them, even if it is something they do not want to hear.

Speaking of kids, if one of them were running into the street and a truck was approaching would I hesitate to tell them not to do that because they might get uncomfortable or be mad at me or take offense with me? Their feelings about me would not be important because their life is at stake. This is true with every non-believer.

Hope you don't unsubscribe me.
May our Lord continue to Bless your ministry.
In Him, Tom Peck

HARRY POTTER MAKE BELIEVE NOT REAL
Subject: Harry Potter
Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001
From: "Utley Christopher M"

when are you gonna discuss Harry Potter? the holy-rollers are up in arms over this movie. my wife (I Utley...she posted a comment yesterday on the John 3:16 thing) and i were watching John Hagee last night and he was talking about how children are gonna get "infected" by the spirit of witchcraft if they go see the movie. needless to say, i was nauseated. not because of what they were saying...but because of what they were implying...

they basically called the parents of America weak and stupid because these parents would willingly subject their children to this spirit of witchcraft...and "you better watch out when your kid gets picked on at school. he's gonna remember this movie and begin to put curses on people." first of all, the Harry Potter books are FICTICIOUS! IT'S ONLY A MOVIE FOR GOODNESS SAKE! second of all, these holy-rollers are stupid enough to believe that parents don't have common sense. of course these parents are gonna tell their kids that the world of Harry Potter is MAKE BELIEVE and IS NOT REAL. third of all, our kids have this same level of common sense instilled in them. children have been reading and watching fairy tales for years. they know that pumpkins don't turn into carriages. they know that bears don't talk. they know that there are no worlds "under the sea." so why would they believe that the world of Harry Potter is real?

i am eagerly anticipating your response to this Harry Potter vs. Christianity controversy. i pray that God will use your words to knock the common sense back into these holy-rolling hyper-religious dumbells!
Chris Utley

Response: I am working on it. -David

MISSING THE WHOLE POINT OF JESUS

From: Chama

I think fundamentalists miss the whole point of the Gospel of Jesus Christ by dwelling upon the minutiae of religious life instead of the major purpose of Christianity: to share the Good News that God loves us and that Jesus Christ died and rose again to give us new life.

I don't believe the world is any nearer to "Doomsday" than it has ever been. The world is in its adolescence if not in its infancy. We have so much yet to learn, so far to go in our exploration of space, inner space, and the ocean's depths. If we can only learn to live in peace and generosity, the world has much to live for. The world, as we know it, ends for each of us at the moment of our death, when we leave time and space to enter into a new dimension of existence which we can only imagine. Christians call it Heaven. . .or Eternal Life.

Response: I think you are on to something here. -David

No need to revise. . .I am with you 100%! God may USE the tragedy of 9-11 to help us awaken to our need for generosity and unity in the face of evil, but God does not SEND such tragedy into our lives. God does not judge the USA nor any political entity. God seeks ALL people to love God and to love one another.

BUT THE WORD REPENT IS STILL APPRPRIATE
Subject: Newsletter_29
Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001
From: Bob Jackson

Dear Bruce,
Again, I thank you for your comments on John 3: 16, and especially find them appropriate in conjunction with Philippians 4:8. I, too, like you am embarrassed by some of the people who misspeak in their hesitancy to find God's hand in acts of evil. My son, who lives in Arlington, VA, just a stone's throw from the Pentagon, was extremely angry with the comments of Jerry Fallwell. I am glad that he apologized and put himself in the group that needs to repent. I am reminded that while he has a boatload of sinners to point at, he seldom speaks to the issue of wealth and poverty and other issues touched on in Scripture.

I am also disappointed that Dr. Dobson and the folks at Focus on the Family, have come across as angry and reactionary. They are largely responsible for the beautiful NIV Inclusive Language Bible being unavailable in America (one has to get it from England), and I feel that it is because they listen to only a small select group of scholars who are largely identified with Evangelicals with an alarmist mentality. (Yes so true! Why do Evangelicals listen to these people? Dobson is not a Bible scholar. He is a Child expert. What gave him the right to take on trained and dedicated experts in Bible scholarship? -David)

You've hit the pre-millennialism squarely, in my opinion. They cause more trouble and feed more mis-information with their schemes and their false predictions and misunderstandings of the Last Days than they do good. (Failure rate is 100% -David)

But the lessons that Jesus teaches in Luke 13 (1-9) are still appropriate anytime there is a tragedy or the like. We need to repent, that is evaluate our own relationship to God and need for God, and recognize that we don't deserve to still be here, but by the grace of God we are. And I think that is what you refer to concerning the people of New York, D.C., and across the land. We are repenting, that is, drawing nearer to God. (God uses the event to, as he does all things that happen -Romans 8:28. -David)

My hope is that more people such as you will get the word out. Your message is good. Keep up the good work.
--Bob Jackson

Response: Thank you -David

Wow, I've just read your response to my original posting and feel truly humbled. Reading what I'd written, I realise I came across as far too harsh, so many apologies for that. I certainly didn't intend to knock America - I come from the UK and see God's protection disappearing from many aspects of society over here too. I was rather arrogant to comment on a country that I have only spent a few weeks in, so once again I apologise for my lack of insight. It could so easily have been a building in London that was hit, not New York. And of course America is not Godless - a group of men from our London church visited Pensicola two years ago, and they came back overflowing with blessing!

I have read your last few newsletters, and I can't help but wonder WHY you have been on a BASHING tone lately. Why all the bashing? Couldn't you just stick with spreading the gospel and talking movies, or entertainment?

You know, Jimmy Swaggart started out the same way. He was bashing everybody, until God finally reveled his sin to everybody. You better be careful before you start bashing these men of God. Sure, they may make mistakes, but who are you to point them all out and get others to turn against them?
BE VERY CAREFUL!

Response: Thanks for your concern. I can appreciate that. Unlike "holier than thou" Swaggert, however, I am not a Fundamentalist and I am willing to admit to the sinful and corrupt person I am. I am no angel. -David

JUDGMENT CALL
Subject: Newsletter_29

From: Bec

From where I sit on the other side of the world, the suggestion may be that it is not God but your fellow human beings who are judging you, the American people. American students I encounter seem to have little understanding of the way that "America" is perceived by the rest of the world - not as an inclusive and generous nation, but one which inflicts pain and suffering on other nations through economic sanctions, wars, cultural colonisation, actual and invidious colonisation, injustices, funding of terrorist regimes (when they want to), supply of arms to governments they agree with....need I go on. These same students are genuinely confused about these attacks - they are uncritically patriotic, and I think that -evil though it may be- Sept 11 is a result of that uncritical and biased (some would say arrogant) self-belief. There is also a sense of incredulity when I explain to my students that America sees itself as God's nation on earth, tied to dreams of manifest destiny - they find it very difficult to reconcile America as a Christian country after all that it has done in the world to inflict non-Christian behaviour and the way that it doesn't take care of its own poor let alone any one elses (apart from dropping food parcels literally on the people of Afghanistan and killing or injuring them). So, just another point of view....

Response: Yes, America is being judged by fellow humans. You are right. -David

MY THOUGHTS AS A CHRISTIAN
Subject: Lord of the Rings
Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2001
From: Jen

I am sure that Tolkien's work will come under fire as has Harry Potter but I believe in this case that the story is what you take away from it. I have read the Hobbit and the Trilogy at least 7 or 8 times now and every time I have learned more from it. Although Tolkien himself may not have been a christian, there are christian values that are still presented to readers in his story. This is important. Unlike Harry Potter, which I have read and enjoyed, albeit with some reservations regarding witchcraft and the violent end of one of Harry's schoolmates, the Triology invokes the use of magic yes but in such a way that it is magic that is guided by providence throughout the stories. In this way it seems to me that there is almost a suggestion of divine intervention at times - for even though Gandalf is a wizard even he needs help and does not cast spells on people but more or less uses "magic" (maybe symbolizing faith?) as a defense against evil when attacked. As a child I loved these books and as an adult I look forward to sharing them with my kids. And I intend to capitalize on the fact that a christian theme is prevalent throughout the story. Where Harry Potter is just an entertaining story with no real discussion of right and wrong, beliefs and values, the Lord of the Rings can be used to emphasize important biblical values and provides illustrative examples as well. So you see it really is what you take from the story!

Thanks - I would have and could have written much more - but that might be a book unto itself one day - and I don't want to hog bilboard space!
Jen
