REINCARNATION
IN "WHAT DREAMS":
David, I appreciate your movie reviews and desire to find points of contact.
If God is truly Sovereign, then He is Sovereign over Hollywood. Certainly,
the "imago dei" is not entirely dead--God does allow the unbeliever
to recognize truths. And, of course, because men are fallen beings, we
regularly misappropriate and corrupt truth. "What
Dreams May Come" is a great example of how spiritual human beings
naturally are and how we corrupt the truth at the same time. I applaud
you for finding the points of contact--many Xians wrongly assume
that there are none and I think that speaks droves about bad theology
within the church. However, I personally would have like to see you deal
more with all the problems in this movie. I believe that Apostle Paul
gives us that very model in Acts 17:16-34 where he makes points of contact
with his pagan audience, points out the problems with their thinking and
reinterprets their truths into true Truth. I am deeply concerned with
the megadose of Eastern thought in this film, especially as it relates
to both Buddhism and Hinduism. At one point in the movie, Albert (Cuba
Gooding, Jr.) tells Chris that "thought is real and the physical
is illusion." Having studied world religions, that caught my attention,
recognizing that metaphysic to be right from the pages of both of
these Eastern religions. For them, this world is an illusion to be
escaped--what is real is what is to come in Nirvana, Enlightenment, etc.
and, as you pointed out, reincarnation is all over this film. I have since
learned that the producers (Metafilmics) designed a film group to tackle
metaphysics with an obviously Eastern stance. I do not think this film
will do well for the same reason that "Grand Canyon" didn't
do well despite an awesome cast: too deep, too philosophical. Most people
want something light and this film makes you think too much. But, thanks
again for finding points of contact. Those that do see it will talk and
that's a great opportunity for evangelism. By the way, in this article
I was reading on the film (before I went to see it), the producers said
they were making a "new heaven" where marriages continue; the
producers complained about Jesus' insistence in Matthew that earthly marriages
are dissolved. I couldn't help but see the tremendous irony since the
wedding--the greatest wedding-- between the Lamb and His Bride will be
consummated at this time! The producers said they were restoring human
dignity by bringing marriage into the afterlife but I found it quite degrading
that heaven could not transcend anything more than earthly relationships.

MY RESPONSE:
Scott, did you go to seminary? Wow, I am impressed with your insight and
terminology. You are right, my reviews tend toward the positive connections
and that I have very little negative response. I imagine that the film
maker is a friend of mine and we are discussing the film's spiritual connections
over a cup of coffee. I keep the conversation on a positive note.
I am always mindful of other Christian reviewers that will be tearing
my friend apart. But, since I love my friend, my approach is different.
You are very right, Jesus said there is no marriage
in heaven, except for the big one, in which we will all be apart of. I
can't wait. Cosmic unity, wow, think of it.
And reincarnation? Let's see. Hmmm. There are
more people alive today
than has ever lived. Hence, if there is reincarnation it is reserved for
only a select few, unless, of course, we were cud chewing cows or something
like that in the past. Not appealing to me, and it certainly wouldn't
have worked in the film. Most of my friends who strongly believe in reincarnation
believe that they have had several lifetimes and where always persons
of note -like queens, kings, or other famous personalities of the past.
None of these friends have ever mentioned being a reincarnated peasant
or cow. The potential danger in reincarnation is to live life looking
backwards. Resting in what one was, rather than advancing into
all the wonderful potential of who we are. |
SUPERMAN
AND JESUS
Oct. 12, 1998. David, I was both fascinated and pleased to find your web
site. It is certainly worthy of the name "Jesus," and it is
by far the most creative, original, and graphically pleasing site that
I have ever been able to enjoy, anywhere on the net. Your site has been
added to my browser's personal toolbar and I intend to be a regular visitor.
I was especially pleased to jump off to the "Superman
60/20 Celebration Site." There, I contributed my 2 cents' worth,
and took some of your observations with me. Without being preachy, I tried
to introduce Superman fans to a comparison/contrast exercise between Superman
and Jesus Christ, the God/man. I've attached the piece as a Corel Envoy
file for your perusal. If you are so inclined, get back to me and tell
me what you think Thanks again for the Super site!
Keep the faith, brother! In Jesus' name, a Superman fan forever,
Paul

Oct 12, 1998. Dear David, Finally someone who truly is obeying Philippians
4:8, looking for the honorable, right, pure, true, lovely, excellence,
and praisworthiness in all things! Instead of focusing on thinking of
so-called "Christian things" you are focused on thinking Christianly
about all things! Thank you.
Finally someone who understands the dignity of
mankind as well as his depravity. You show how humankind, as an image-bearer
of God, truly can't help but live in accordance with this image--that
in the midst of corruption and rebellion, all desires for good find their
ultimate fulness in Christ.
Thank you.
I will visit your site often and promote it from my own site!

EXCEPTING
ANTI-CHRISTIAN SITE
Oct. 11, 1998. I must admit, when I
first saw the name "Hollywood Jesus" I was expecting some kind
of anti-Christian site. What a pleasant surprise! It sure is refreshing
to see film reviews from a Christian perspective, without dwelling on
all the negative aspects of Hollywood film-making. I am so sick and tired
of self-righteous legalistic Christians telling me what movies I should
or shouldn't watch. (Some even say that we shouldn't watch movies at all!)
I'm a 46-year-old Christian who has had it up to here with legalism in
the Body of Christ. I applaud what you are doing with your ministry.
One question: how do you spot the intricate details
in these films? For example, I saw Mimic, but
I missed the guardian angels in the stained glass windows.
Thank you - great job!

PLEASANT
HOURS & SIMON BIRCH
Oct. 9, 1998. Dear David, My name's Jon, and I'm extremely impressed
with Hollywood Jesus. It took me back to when I saw Christian symbolism
in everywhere and in everything, which was an approach I gradually left.
After spending a few pleasant hours reading and enjoying your pages, I'm
reconsidering that Christian interpretation doesn't have to stop with
the objective storyline. While I might disagree with your interpretation
of a movie here or there, the mass effect of your reviews is convincing:
The stories coming at us, are stories of love and redemption, and good
triumphing over evil, stories of Christ.
I noticed that so far, you haven't done a review
of Simon Birch yet. Please see it. You won't
be disappointed, it's an excellent movie about being an unrespected prophet
who has little control over what happens to him and his friend. (And most
critics just don't get it.)
I too, have a Christian Website with movie
reviews; Please stop by and visit. I'd appreciate your feedback.

Shalom v'Tovah,
MY RESPONSE
Wow! I like you! I went through your site. Incredible!
I mean wow! I love your spirituality. I enjoyed reading of your Journey.
You like film! You write reviews! Could you write one on Simon Birch?
If you do I'll post it. I trust you because of what you wrote in your
site. You are my kind of guy. I did see the movie. It's great -He's a
Christ type for sure. In the original book he believes he is virgin born!
Actually I hope you do. It is rare moment to meet someone like you. I
would very much like to remain in touch with you.
I feel honored by your good words regarding HJ.

BRAVEHEART
My favorite movie is "Braveheart." There's a sequence in it
where Robert the Bruce is confronting his father. In it his father is
trying to persuade him to take the easy way to fame and power. Interestingly,
the son ties in belief in his rebuke. He leaves his father and later takes
a stand. The metaphors to the Bible are flying right and left everywhere!
It is a powerful example of denying the world to accept Christ. There
are so many wonderful allusions to spiritual things, muttled at times
by worldliness, but the picture at the ending is so striking! "The
Shadowlands" is a more perfect film about spiritual things. It affected
me a lot, in my understanding of relationships.

HJ
David, I love your site. I've been trying to find just such sites on the
Web, but it's very difficult. I found you through Bob West's Theophilus
site, which is another great place. Keep up the good work. I've been telling
people (even unbelievers) about Hollywood Jesus and I've linked to you
(I stole your banner) on my site. If you get a chance, visit and let me
know what you think about it. It's a continuing story of a Christian who
struggles to know God in a deeper way through his everyday experiences,
such as grocery shopping and covering stories for the newspaper.

ELMER GANTRY
Oct 5, 1998. Really enjoyred your site -- good insights, and really helpful,
since I like to refer to movies in my preaching... However, I can hardly
believe that Elmer Gantry isn't on anyone's list
--- what a fantastic movie, in which the matter of "who's the
good guys and who's the bad guys" is really not an easy one to decide.

VIRTUAL
FAITH
Dear David,
Oct, 5,1998. Have you had a chance to read and evaluate Tom Beaudoin's

videos reveal their irreverent spirituality? Is there any one book on
analyzing modern movies to see Jesus in them that you would recommend?

CAN'T HIDE
ASTEROID FILM.
CAN ANYONE HELP?
David,
Oct. 5, 1998. A relative recently tried to tell me about a film which
was recommended to her. It was about asteroids heading for earth but it
isn't "Deep Impact", "Armageddon" or "Asteroids".
She couldn't remember the name of the film and hasn't actually seen it
herself but wants to hire it if it's available at the video store. Not
much to go on but I thought you may have some ideas.
Alan. asharpham@tsn.cc
MY RESPONSE
Can anyone help him? I have posted his e-mail address.
Oct 9. More on the saga. Apparently the
film is called "Fire FROM the Sky". Sorry about that! The
local video shop has it listed but is not available from any of their
suppliers according to their lists. Can you find out anything about
it for me? It doesn't rate a mention in Leonard Maltin's 1998 Movie
& Video Guide either.
God bless, Alan.

DOES HJ
ACCEPT REVIEWS?
Dear David, Great site! I am interested in posting some reviews - from
a Christian perspective - that I am doing on several films. Can I send
them to you for consideration?
Your site is close to what I am looking for.
Is there a site that
specifically reviews films to give Christians talking points on using
the films for evangelism? (yours seems close, but it appears a little
more general).
Some classic films that could use reviews (didn't
see them):
Franco Zeffereli's Jesus of Nazareth, The Mission, Awakenings, The Dead
Poet's Society, Chariots of Fire, Sophie's Choice, Defending Your Life,
The English Patient, Grand Canyon, Crimes and Misdemeanors,
God Bless your work here!
Kris Childress
MY RESPONSE.
Yes, I do accept reviews. If I Iike 'em, I post 'em.
Most Christian review sites are moralistic centered and not Christ centered.
It is so sad. I don't know of any such site that you are looking for
except for HJ.
I like your list. They are important films.

TRUMAN IS
THE JESUS FIGURE
Oct. 4,1998. Interesting site, and interesting
movie. Truman as a pro-Christian allegory
may or may not be what its creators intended. However, I agree with David's
comments to the young lady who left the repressive pseudo- Christian organization.
Unfortunately many self- proclaimed Christof believe they have all the
answers for their followers. Truman can be viewed as a Christ figure in
that he is tempted, crucified (on the boat), walks on water, and is reborn
and "ascends",showing us all the way. I initially understood
the film as an existential tale, this is better.

ROBERT SWEENY'S
BEST FILMS LIST
BEN HUR --In looking through the various
lists already posted I couldn't help but wonder, hasn't ANYONE
seen BEN HUR? One of the best films about Christ ever made. One of the
most moving as well. Excellent depiction of God working in the life of
one man.
Steve Martin's LEAP OF FAITH amazed me with it's
overtly Christian themes that it never put down or made light of. The
ending is astonishingly deep (but read some of the secular reviews, even
the ones that liked the film overall didn't understand the ending. How
sad.).
John Boorman's EXCALIBER is filled with spiritual
concepts which can provide hours of interesting discussion.
Woody Allen gives a wonderful example of loving
the sinner without condoning the sin in MIGHTY APHRODITE. The sacred bonds
of marriage are tested and found true in this film as well. (The language
used by the title character will totally offend most "Christian"
viewers, but hey folks, Jesus came to recapture the lost, not just hang
out with the good and pure. Whoever THEY are!)
GROUNDHOG DAY has Bill Murray learning a hard
lesson: Fullfillment comes from loving others more than yourself.
In TRAPPED IN PARADISE three dopey bank robbers
spend Christmas Eve trying to escape a small town with the loot they've
just stolen, but are won over by the overwhelming love and kindness of
their victims. This film depicts the love of Christ as it SHOULD be lived,
and has more real Christmas Spirit than any holiday movie since Miracle
on 34th St. (1947 version)
SCHINDLER'S LIST vividly depicted how God can
even use a non-believer to do His will (Schindler is shown to be a Catholic,
but apparently a lapsed Catholic, if he ever really believed at all).
Also, the list itself is fascinating. Many people helped Jews survive
during the war, but Schindler is the only one to my knowledge who made
a specific list of people he really didn't know or have any personal connection
with (other than having worked in his factory). Could descendents of Schindler's
Jews be part of the 144,000 mentioned in Revelation?
And I would be very much remiss if I failed to
mention LILIES OF THE FIELD. A great statement about simple faith.? One
of the best films about Christ ever made. One of the most moving as well.
Excellent depiction of God working in the life of one man.
Your website is most interesting, thoughtful
rather than judgemental. I am enjoying the exploration of it very much.
Please keep at it. |
CITY OF
ANGELS IN THE UK
-WONDERFUL FILM WE HAD SEEN
Hi! I was in the cinema with a lot of friends. After we left the cinema
everybody was as silent as they are if something terrible has happened.
All feelings and impressions go round and round in our heads. We dreamt
and we didn´t say anything for a long time. Then after several minutes,
somebody tries to express his feelings. Everybody thought the same thing:
"City of Angels" had been a
wonderful - probably the most wonderful - film we had ever seen. We talked
about it and everybody agreed when I decided to buy the CD. After having
bought it, everybody wanted to listen to it, to remember the pictures
and the feelings. All of my friends wished that there might be something
like angels and we learned something with the help of the film: Just hope,
there would be help - somewhere
In fact it was very interesting
that these angels didn´t wear white dresses or sth. like that. I
think it´s a good decision to dress them in black colours. I think
it´s a well-made film, thanks for that

SUPERMAN
Hi David! I dropped in for a quick visit to Hollywood Jesus, and
am impressed with what you have done. I only took time to read your
review of Superman and found that very interesting.
Even though I had been a fan of Superman from the days of the early
comic books and I enjoyed that movie immensely, the things mentioned in
the review never occured to me. I'll return later when I have more time
to browse.

9-24-98. I understand that recently this film
was reviewed in the Boston Globe. Would you by any chance have a copy

THE APOSTLE
-DIFFERENT VIEWS
This is a wonderful web project--creative, fun
and so informative. I'm Chair of Education at a small Christian college
and will definitely link to your site from my departmental home page.
I haven't gotten too far into your reviews as yet, but I was eager to
see your reports on "The Apostle."
I agree that it is a wonderful movie, both in its content and its acting/production.
Interestingly, as my wife and I debriefed following the film, we found
we had very opposite reactions. I was very moved by Sonny and his humanness.
She had experienced early in her childhood some overbearing Pentacostal
evangelists, so she watched the entire movie with tenseness and negative
feelings. Your review is "right on" in showing wildly varied
views and opinions. Thanks for your efforts. I know the effort involved
in even small web-based projects (I maintain several sites), and you are
doing a terrific job. I'm proud of the ability and insight of so many
... to bridge gaps between our faith in Christ and living in our late
20th Century culture. It's no small task, and it takes flexible, creative
thinking, along with mature, secure faith.

| POWDER BY
SALVA
David, (My favorite film is) Powder
by Victor Salva.
MY RESPONSE:
Thank you Mary. I appreciate your response.
Why do you like Powder? Do you like a few others? God bless you,
David Bruce.
REPLY:
Thank you for your acknowledgement. This movie
touched me with it's message and it's artful direction. Normally,
I am not that moved by a movie, however, the basic philosophical message
coincided so much with my beliefs in the interconnection of all via
energy that I looked for the writer and noticed that the writer and
director were the same. This heightened my interest. I wanted to know
more about Victor Salva and so I searched his name on the net and that's
how I found you. I also found several negative comments about Mr. Salva,
which were concerning. I had to ask myself how could someone so insightful
to the universal principles have written this sensitive story with such
talented direction and have such a black mark himself as a child molester.
When I found your sight and your comments on the movie your visions
added further support to my original impressions. I am an avid reader
of spiritual materials and in a metaphysical way the movie theme reinforced
my beliefs concerning energy and the unity of all. I am not a
big movie buff, but regardless of Salva's personal worldly issues his
portrayal of logical spiritual/scientific principles sends an informative
message. It is sad that his social dark mark has served to blacken the
important message that this movie represents. I compliment you on your
insightful review and agree with your observance that spiritual messages
are surfacing at a much needed time. There are only two other movies
that have touched me and I am not sure of the titles. I think one was
"Far and Away" were in the end ( Tom Crews??) dies and the
camera pans to the sky showing the spirit rising, and the camera pans
back down showing the spirit choosing to return to the body. I also
thought the "Preacher's Wife" had value.
Thanks! GBY
MY RESPONSE:
It is sad about Salva. Sometimes in darkness
light can shine. Saint Paul was the spiritual genius who said "the
evil I don't want to do, I do, and the good I would do, I don't."
He, too, was perplexed over his own personal evil and called himself
"the chiefest of sinners." But he also knew that no one is
beyond the grace and redemptive power of God. This is the message of
Powder. The film is the cry of Salva from the depths of his soul for
all the world to see and hear. There is light even in the darkest night
of soul.

VICTIM OF
LARGE SCALE DECEPTION
David, I am a 41 year old 1st year Philosophy
student (a late bloomer) and my first assignment in over 25 years is 'Could
I be the victim of a large scale deception about the world which
seems to be the source of my experience? Set out skeptical arguments which
raise this alleged possibility and consider skeptical arguments of Descartes
or others..such as the systematic doubt or deception in movies like Total
Recall or Dark City. What do you think is the best way of addressing
these skeptical arguments?'
Truman has not yet been
released here but it was movies like "It's a Wonderful Life"
that led to my life long interest in Philosophy that I have only now had
the opportunity to pursue in earnest.
As I have said in my assignment I believe that
"Cinema Fiction has become a means for contemporary, non-academic
writers such as King and Niccol to explore traditionally Philosophical
questions. This provides an opportunity to stimulate thought and discussion
of these ideas in the public arena."
While, as I said, Truman has not been released
we have seen extensive advertising for the show so I was seeking information
from the net when I found your Page. I found it most helpful as it was
so thoroughly informative.
Of course my essay is only now in the research
stage but my working hypothesis is that (as Truman and other movies show)
the problem with sustaining any deception (or self deception) is continuity.
The way therefore to approach this question may lie in examining the "holes-in
the-plot" of our lives. A starting point for these is the various
questions (moral right, existence of god, identity etc) that Philosophers
are concerned with.
In other words our "reality"
is not seamless. I simply ask could these inconsistencies represent the
flaws that may later become clues.
I have to agree with one of your respondents
who argues that Christof could as easily be a description of your god
as of commercialism but I'm not prepared to debate our contrary religious
convictions.
Thanks again for the information and if you like
I'll send you a copy of the end result.
-Peter G
MY RESPONSE.
Yes, I would like a copy. I am intrigued by
your current study. And yes, we are victims of our own culture. A study
of the third world reveals this. "How many colors are there in
a rainbow?" Most in our culture would say six (red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, purple). However, some third world cultures see only two
colors: warm and cool. In fact there are millions of colors. Our language
and cultural conditioning limits our perception of reality. There is
a line in Truman, "we accept the world
as it is presented to us." How true this is. How few people do
what you are doing: Question the reality of the world as it has been
presented to us. Go for it my man. Because you are indeed a "victim
of a large scale deception about the world which seems to be the source
of (your) experience."
Check out this biblical passage: 1 Cor. 1:27-28
(NLT) "Instead, God deliberately chose things the world considers
foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose
those who are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things
despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them
to bring to nothing what the world considers important." This is
Truman. And it is you. Keep in touch. I like your direction! Thank you
for your kind words regarding Hollywood Jesus,
Warmly, David Bruce.

COLIN'S NEW LIFE
Colin e-mailed in his top
ten films. I was impressed. I asked him to tell me a little more about
himself. And, he did:
David: OK, Now you've asked, I will elaborate,
but I will need to give you some relevant background that will
help to put things into perspective.
Up until the age of 28 (between 3-4 yrs ago)
I was your typical fun loving, hard working successful business
professional, that enjoyed a close set of fun loving friends.
We regularly "kicked the arse" (UK
Saying) out of life and competed with each other for encouragement
and possibly because of high levels of testosterone. Eventually
after a peak 2-3 yrs, we all met "live in" partners
and thereafter things became more complicated. You can choose
your friends, but not their partners.
So, in summary things were pretty good; no
money worries (classed as yuppies), plenty of parties, great and
stable relationships, families OK. We never discussed life too
much only how we may improve ourselves, and sometimes quoted Earl Nightingale
and Anthony Robbins on each others answer phone - "Success
is the progressive realization of a WORTHY goal" & "there
is no such thing as luck. Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity
and opportunity is there all the time!"
So I guess you could say that we were looking
to improve and develop, but this ran in the background. We mostly
came from working to middle class up bringing.
However, things were about to change incredibly.
I introduced most of these guys and I was about to be the one
singled out and socially separated. I can tell you this is not
so great, I love them as close friends very much.
I personally had always been fairly philosophical
and had periods where I could not stop thinking about what life
was about, the single most valuable factor in life that to me
seemed to be Love. The fact that we all believe in Love even though
we cannot see it etc.. But I never looked to a God or to God for
an answer. Only as a last resort when things got tough, would
I half heartedly call out to God for help, more in frustration.
I never really new the importance of Jesus,
and truly thought that he was no different to Moses, Isaiah, Noah
or any of the other great prophets. I had no idea that his identity
was God, and what I am trying to say is, that if I was looking
for God, I would not have looked to Jesus or Moses or the others, but
God himself.
OK, that was an elaboration if ever I wrote
one.
However, during this time I was looking for
nothing, things were great, as I explained earlier. One night
however, I was falling asleep, just sat content in a chair and "suddenly"
my head and (it felt like) my body was gripped by the brightest
light and
indescribable sensation. The light was brighter than the Sun and was
white and pure - full of life. The feelings where at least 1,000 times
happier than my most happy time in my life. The strangest thing was,
however, even "if" I had been looking for GOD, I new immediately
that this was Jesus Christ and no one else. (Feel those goose
bumps yet - I just did as I wrote this!) In his presence I felt
a joy that I cannot ever explain in words, It seemed as though
I could have stayed there forever! And I normally cannot stand
still for two minutes. He said to me "You are Good"
& "Tell Them" followed by what seemed to be a 10
minute period of non-verbal communication. The other amazing feeling
I had whilst experiencing this, was that I felt that I had always
known Him.
I did not know what this meant, but after 18
months or so, I think I realize what was being said. "You're
good" I think meant for me, your OK, your valuable, don't
worry what others say, be confident - Why? Because I had (privately)
always doubted myself and my ability. The "Tell Them"
I believe was simply this - to tell people what happened to me,
and under what circumstances it happened - I wasn't looking for
Jesus, and in fact didn't know a thing about him apart from the fact
that he died on a cross, and that if I was looking for anything (which
I was not) it would have been God!
Any way (bored yet), over time I let this experience
become just something that happened to me, and I had soon just
got back into the normal routine. Work went downhill, my Grandma
got Cancer for the third time and said she would be dead in 6
months, my mother became very ill and my father became an absolute
nightmare. Anyway, despite all this turmoil, I had a great partner
and I felt as though I was coping very well.
I gradually became tired; physically, mentally
and spiritually. I began to see how people really are, whereas
I think before I had often been naive. It was like a blindness
had gone, a new window had been opened and for the 1st time I
clearly understood in others, insincerity, bitterness, masquerades,
hidden agendas, selfishness, gossip and so on.. I was devastated
at the real state of affairs, how could I have missed this for
so long? I became quiet, reclusive and very uncomfortable with
myself and others I didn't trust. My spirit
was dying and eventually felt as though it had left me completely.
I began praying (out of desperation, but now
because of what happened 18 months previously) and prayed for
my Grandmother and my mother. Three months later after my Grandma
refused treatment she came to my house and declared "I have
just been for my check up, which we thought would be the last
one, and to the Doctors amazement, the Cancer has gone. They are
now scratching their heads in wonder." My mother came out
of hospital and my parents actually get on very well now, they
even respect each others opinion - wow!
However, I still and more then ever felt dead
inside and remained desperate. I contacted an old Manager of
mine who was a Christian, and asked him for advice and help. He
gave me several books on faith and one such book explained who
Christ was (Questions of Life - Nicky Gumbel - Kingsway Publications
- UK). I now new how important my experience was, based on facts
I could not dispute about who He was. The more I read (looking
for the reason I shouldn't believe) the more
I was convinced. During my reading several amazing coincidences
occurred, they never happened before and merely added to this
realization. A few weeks later I came to John (my previous manager)
and said that I "think" I was ready to give my life to Christ.
I realized that I can achieve nothing with no life spirit inside
me, and if he is the "Life" then maybe he will give
me some back. My stance was "I will give it a try and see
if it works" - what a skeptic eh!
Anyway, I have never looked back and grow strong,
as well as more amazed every day. I am more alive than I have
ever been, even though most of my previous friends have abandoned
me (they are beginning to come back). They thought I was going
crazy and "losing it", but I am now proving to be far
from that. Instead of "losing it" I feel very much as
though I have "gained it".
As you mentioned on the web site Hollywood
Jesus, "something's going on". I see it every day and
your film just convinces me more. More coincidences happen to
me every day and I seem to get placed in front of so many key
people that are influencing society and faith. I also realize
that this also has a lot to do with my preoccupation's, I'm not
totally "out there".
You asked how I discovered the site, I don't
remember exactly, but I was looking through a Christian web site,
or "searching" on Jesus or Christian faith. I was amazed
when I saw the site and mailed it to my un-approving non-Christian
friends. One of them spent the weekend with me this week and your
site was the main stimulus to our conversations. He called me
Monday in fits of laughter to tell me that he has just discovered,
the associate he hired 2 weeks ago is an active Christian. He
thinks that he maybe under attack!
I hope this was what you were looking for,
but if it isn't then at
least "I told" someone else what happened, Jesus Christ will
do the rest.
MY RESPONSE:
Wow, what a story you have. Thank you for sharing
it. May I post part of it? God has started you on an incredible journey.
Things are really happening to you that go beyond the norm. Please stay
in touch. I would like to keep current on your adventure in Jesus. It
seems there is something powerful a foot in your life. I thought about
you all day. You are now in my prayers.
Warmly in Christ, David Bruce
David, Thank you very
much for your encouraging response, sometimes I can tell you I
feel quite isolated. It's great to receive fellowship from anywhere
and by any means.
However, please feel free to post whatever
you wish, being Christian I am sure that the Lord is guiding you.
I will pray for you also and for Hollywood Jesus, it seems to
have the power to reach into the "secular" zone.
I am also of the opinion that the Church needs
to show people that Christianity is not "boring", irrelevant,
or untrue. The film industry and popular music etc.. is an effective
way to reach people. Too many churches stay inside the building.
Blessings in Christ

FROM RON WHEELER,
CARTOONIST
I very much enjoyed your web site. I enjoyed
reading your review of Spielburg's Private
Ryan. Sometimes I'm amazed that he and others like Michael
Medved are not Christians. I heard a rumor that his mom is a Messianic
Jew. Perhaps he will some day create their way right into the kingdom.
It was my creative pursuits that eventually led me to Christ, and eventually
to my calling, "to create cartoons to be a communication vehicle
for spreading God's truths." After reading your review, I bet you
understand what I am trying to do with the gift God has given me, don't
you?
I like your approach to relaying the Gospel.
I think it will be very effective. You remind me of a book written about
30 years ago called, "The Parable of Peanuts" which was written
about drawing a spiritual parallel from Charles Schultz's comic strip.
His premise was, which I still adhere to today, "Whatever your work
is, if you put your heart in it, it will reflect your heart." For
me, and someday perhaps for Steven Spielberg and others in Hollywood,
it is my hope that our work would reflect a heart devoted to Jesus.

FILM STUDENT
FROM MEXICO
My name is Humberto B., International Student
from Mexico at Regent University School of Film. I am currently writing
a paper about this movie, and your review really helped me a lot. If you
want a copy of my final work, please let me know...I was very desapointed
about other groups reviews; they are totally blind about the spiritual
content.

HOLLYWOOD'S GROWING
INTEREST
Hi there! My name is Antracia Merrill and I am
working on a story for a magazine called Gospel Today regarding Hollywood's
growing interest in movies and TV shows with a Christian theme. I'd like
to speak with you to get a little insight from you on the piece. If you
can, please give me a call at (555) 555-5555. Hopefully, you can give
me a call before my story must be filed.
MY RESPONSE:
Not a problem!

ABOUT AMERICAN
REMAKES
Hello David Bruce, My name is Emmanuelle and
I live in Belgium (near Bruxelles) I don't speak very well English but
I'm going to explain why I write to you. I have to make a work for university
about the remakes and your site interest me. My work is based on two films
: Point of no return/Nikita, and: Three man
and a baby/ trois hommes et un couffin. I'm looking for documents about
the remakes in general and in my two films in particular. If you have
documents or title of books of what ever else about these films please,
Write me back.
Thank You Emmanuelle.
MY RESPONSE:
I don't have any documents on the two films
that you are doing. When is your paper due? Maybe I could look around
and find something for you. Let me know how much time you have.
Sincerely, David Bruce

THE TERMINATOR
I was fascinated by your "Hollywood Jesus"
website. Examining movies from a religious perspective -- what a concept!
I didn't know any sites like this existed. Keep up the good work.
One film you might want to explore: "The
Terminator." (The original one from 1984, that is, not the sequel.)
Amazingly enough, it tells a story similar to the birth of Christ. It
features a woman who has an infant child that will one day be the savior
of his people. The child's name: John Connor. Those initials should ring
a bell. I can't explain it very well, but give it a look.
And I agree with your review of "The
Apostle." I saw it when it was at the end of its theatrical run.
It was an intelligent, poignant film. How it missed winning any
Oscars, I don't know.
If you ever get the chance, take a look at the
"coming
attractions" trailer for the movie "Superman."
It describes Superman in very Christ-like terms and goes right along with
what you said in your review. I saw the trailer on a program called "Trailer
Park."
-Joe
MY RESPONSE
Joe, Thanks for your gracious words. Yes I do
know that about Terminator. Also, according to Time magazine T2 is about
Gabriel telling Virgin Mary to flee into Egypt with the savior of the
world. I did not know that about the Superman trailer, thanks for the
tip. I'll try to get a copy of it. BTW the Apostle hits video stores Aug.
18th. You seem to be a very insightful person.
Warmly, David Bruce

YER IDIOTS
Yer all just a bunch of idiots with pretensions
of spirituality!
-Edmund
MY RESPONSE.
Dear Edmund: Thank you for expressing yourself.
I too think of myself as an idiot at times. You confirm what I sometimes
think of myself. "Pretensions" yes! I'm working on them. "Spirituality"?
Well, I try, but it isn't easy. "Yer all a bunch..."? No,
its just me, one person, one human being. I am glad there is only one
idiot like me and not a "bunch of idiots". God help the planet
if there were more of me. I am a pretty worthless piece of trash, at
times, filled with flaws and undeserving of even the least kindness
from you. Thank you for your reminder of the worthless sinner I am.
Do you have any insights into overcoming human flaws? Do you know how
I can be more spiritual? Do you think that the fact that someone, like
me, exists means anything? You exist! And, I think that is pretty special!
Warmly, David Bruce
EDMUND'S RESPONSE:
My previous e-mail mentioned (albeit rather
bluntly) that you are all a bunch of idiots. This reaction is understandable
(though probably not excusable) from someone who, as of now, am a self-confessed
agnostic. I appreciate your reply though. The very fact that you bother
to reply to such a derogatory statement by me shows that you are probably
not entirely "pretending to be spiritual".
You see, I was once a truly committed Christian
who hold dearly to all the orthodox Christian doctrines. As time passed,
I got absolutely disappointed with the pseudo-spirituality all around
me. To be honest, I too have also been guilty of pseudo-spirituality
- the kind which looks for a devil under every pew and practice to "see
eternity in a blade of grass". The kind that goes around mouthing
"Alleluias" and "Praise the Lord", who believes
that "all things work for the good of those who love the Lord ..."(Rom.8:28).
In my years as a Christian I have met some who were truly spiritual.
Example, Michael Card the singer-songwriter who basically sing his way
through the Bible. A.W. Tozer, that great preacher with the Alliance
Witness whose books alone (Root of the Righteous, Knowledge of the Holy,
Divine Conquest, Pursuit of God, Paths to Power, etc.) are a veritable
"cloud of witnesses". I go on to appreciate men like Dave
Hunt, C.S. Lewis, Leonard Ravenhill and the like. If there were more
of such men (at least in my local church), I would probably still be
a believer.
Alas, this is a doomed generation. Doomed to
follow teachings such as the health-and-wealth doctrines, Name-It-And-Claim-It,
King-James-Onlyism, angel-worship, Matthew Fox's New Spirituality, undiscerning
ecumenism, etc. Others hardly even believe anything at all, they merely
follow the latest trend and put on a facade of spirituality by criticizing
certain Hollywood movies, exposing the apparent "Satanic"
influences of certain rock songs with backward-masking, and promoting
undiscerningly certain songs (believed to be Christian in origin); such
as Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" with the hedonistic
line (How can it be wrong when it feels so right) apparently ignored
because the song has a certain Christian "flavor" in its tune!
All right now, enough rambling. Here's one
idiot writing to another idiot - we exist, we can still choose to live.
Existence precedes essence? A somewhat liberating thought ain't it?
MY RESPONSE:
Edmund, thank you for writing again. I am amazed
by your story. I can relate. There must be thousands of people, like
you, who have grown disenchanted with all that pre-packaged churchianity
stuff. I really like your list of authors. It's a good one. Your statement,
"If there were more of such men (at least in my local church),
I would probably still be a believer" indicates, to me, a lack
of appreciation of your own inner spiritual depth. Edmund, your letter,
otherwise, indicates to me that you have a lot of spiritual depth. For
years you have pursued the inner and outward journey. And, you are still
on it. Just in a different way. Keep on, my man. It's worth every pain
and joy. Here is an interesting verse for you: Matthew 28:17. It's you.
And it's the mark of a true disciple. Also: Genesis 32:28, "Your
name will no longer be Jacob," the man told him. "It is now
Israel, because you have struggled with both God and men and have won."
Just imagine that,
ISRAEL = those
who struggle with God!
And, DISCIPLE
= some doubted!
Edmund, keep on struggling with God. Keep on
believing and doubting at the same time. I pray you will win in your
fight against and with God just as Jacob did.
Keep in touch, you are unique in that most
people haven't even started doing the hard work as you have. I was deeply
moved by your letter and haven't been able to get it out of my mind
for 4 days now. Powerful!
Kindest regards, David Bruce

HOW
CAN I CONQUER PAIN AND TALK TO GOD?
Dear sir, please tell me how to conquer the
pain and the pills and to speak to God!!!! I'm close to the edge
and I'm not sure how to step back. I lost my soul mate on March 28,
1997. It was good Friday, not for me and my family. We had been married
for 33 yr. He was my white knight and a sudden stroke/heart attack took
him before I could say good-bye and this happened in front of our 16
yr. old daughter and 2 yr. old grandson. He made a promise to him the
night before that he would never be hurt or alone again. And, he made
me promise not to keep our wedding pac-- if he died first, I could come
too. 2 months later I had major back surgery that has left me in extreme
pain and partially disabled. 9 months later I lost my mom and sister.
I have to work to support the 3 of us and the pills allow me to do that.
Tell me how to keep B---'s promise??? I do believe in GOD, but???
Thanks, E------
P.S. I'm glad you made it !!!!
MY RESPONSE:
Dear E-----: My heart goes out to you. I
have not been able to stop thinking about your letter. You have been
through so much pain and hurt. I met with a group of friends last
night to discuss a children's program we are going to do and I told
them of your situation (with out giving your name or e-mail address,
of course) and we all prayed for you. It was a powerful moment. My
friends were moved by your story. Prayer is simply talking to God
in your head or with your mouth. Easy. We all go through so much in
life. My father died. Then my sister died. Life isn't always easy.
But, God does go with us through every pain and situation. E----,
do you have a contemporary English Bible? If you would like one I'll
send on to you, free of course, and I will mark some key passages
that I think might help you. The Bible says you are free to remarry,
you would have God's blessing and the blessing of B----. But, you
are probably not in a good emotional place right now for this. And
then, there are your conflicting thoughts. I think there maybe some
other things I can do for you. If you would like to dialogue some
more just reply to this letter.
Warmly, David Bruce
E's RESPONSE:
THANK YOU ,so very much for your kind reply.
I do have a very used Bible and I would be very interested in sharing
the words of GOD. This is a time of great loneliness and despair.
My childhood was not one of great happiness, but finding my soul mate
at a very young age, saved me!!! B--- was a perfect gift from GOD,
he had a heart of gold and held a joy for life that I have not seen
in anyone else in my life. It's very hard to face the next day knowing
he isn't going to pull up into the drive -so that I could run out
to say I've missed you and get a kiss and laugh and ask how his day
way, he always made people laugh. He always had a smile and could
make you laugh, even if you thought or knew you were dying. He was
a simple man and was LOVED by ALL who knew him. He was the foundation
of our family and without him the family has skattered to the wind.
This is a fact!! He was my only friend! My best friend and life was
complete with just 1 like him. Tears of loneliness are streaming down
my face and my grandson is saying that I shouldn't cry for grandpa
and it's making him sad, as he wipes them away. The harder I try to
pull myself out of this black hole the deeper I sink.--tomorrow I
go to the hosp for tests, I'm very afraid of the answer. as B---,
lay dying in my arms all I could say was that he had been a perfect
husband, father, grandpa(52 yrs young) and that it was alright for
him to go. I couldn't ask, any more of him, and I knew living on machines
would have killed his beautiful soul. not one time did I say please
don't leave me alone, I can't go on alone?? I pray I said these things
knowing that I didn't have the right to ask him to stay on this earth
when GOD was calling. I lived inside a perfect little world and never
wanted it to change. B--- knew the real me and he loved me!! I don't
think I can ever expect that again and it's hell. I don't know why
I've been able to type these words to you, but for some reason it
seems like the right thing to do, thanks for caring and all your prayers.
they truly do mean a lot.
-Sincerely, E
MY RESPONSE
Dear E, thank you for writing back. I am
so deeply moved by your pain. I keep thinking of you. B--- was
really a good man for you! A real God-send! I continue to have the
people in my church pray for "E." Such emotional pain
keeps some people from moving forward. This is not good. But,
at least you are moving forward, slowly, but moving! And, this is
good. Do you know of a good local church? Perhaps, the minister
or priest could pray with you and give you some additional emotional
support. We all need each other. Let me know where to send you
the Bible and helps, if you want me to. Life is amazing. We never
know what's around the next turn. I am praying that God will surprise
you with something good! May God continue to be with you E.

PRINCE
OF EGYPT
I am pleased that care is being taken with
this film to be as sensitive as possible to the Jewish and Christian
communities however I am concerned that the era of Ramesses II is yet
again being portrayed as the era of the Jewish stay in Egypt. It would
seem that not as much care is being taken to put the story into proper
historic context. The communicating of world faiths is crucial to developing
a harmonious world community but we must also get our history into perspective
to understand the evolution of society. The influence of dynastic Egyptian
culture on the modern world should not be belittled or demonized.
Kind regards, Morag
MY RESPONSE:
True we don't know when the Children of Israel
were in Egypt. Some scholars, however, think it was during Ramesses
ll. Will we ever really know? I think the point of the
film is that slavery of any people is wrong and Egypt did enslave
people, as did America. America is nonetheless important as is dynastic
Egypt. I don't believe demonizing Egypt is the point of the film.
The Prince of Egypt doesn't demonize
ancient Egypt any more than Amastad demonizes
America, or Schindler's List demonizes Germany.

A WALK IN
THE CLOUDS
Hi, it's me again. Kent in Houston.
Your site is really hummin' and looking great! Thought you might like
a tip on a movie I think is truly great. It stars Keannu Reeves and is
a sleeper. The title is "A Walk in the Clouds". An American
GI comes home after WWII only to find his war bride has been less than
faithful. He determines to make a go of it anyway and hits the road as
a candy salesman. He befriends a young woman who is returning home "in
the family way" from her college professor. She is sure her strict
Italian family will disown her. He offers to return with her as her "husband"
who will then abandon her at least allowing her to live with some respectability
in her family's eyes. They ultimately fall in love. He refuses to consummate
their love because he is already married. He learns the true meaning of
family. Her Father learns the true meaning of love. The climax is powerful.
You must see it! It available on video. |
EDITED FEATURES
Hello David, Thanks for your great websites, and reflectively thoughtful
content about movies as a believer, and pastor. I'm glad we can look into
culture and know that many are useful parables to convey spiritual truths.
My wife is from a more legalistic upbringing, and just more sensitive
to offensive content of movies. we were wondering (don't know where to
begin asking) if anyone puts out the movie videos that are shown on airplanes,
with offensive/suggestive words and scenes edited out? Is there a potential
market for this "edited version" of movies? Who might I ask
to find out? Thanks!
DJ Chuang, executive pastor
Ambassador Bible Church
Falls Church, VA
My response: Thank you for
your kind thoughts. I appreciate it. Like your wife, I used to preach
against Hollywood. Then one day it occurred to be that I was going
about it all wrong. We are a media saturated culture. Everyone rents
videos and watches television etc. Everyone! Nothing will change that
so I thought of using the culture to communicate spiritual ideas and
dialog. A teenage girl came up to me the other day and said Pastor
David ever since you told me how movies use the Bible stories I always
look for that when I go to the movies. WOW! Bingo! Also tell
your wife that Hollywood is changing. Less nudity, sex and violence
these days.
Item 2: No, the studios would have to do that. And they won't. No
money in it. However there are 2 options. Record off network television
"edited for television." Or get the new device that connects
to your TV. There is the V chip coming and a new product that removes
all bad words. Check this product out at http://www.dove.org

THE
TRUMAN SHOW
I was a born again Christian for 25 years, spirit filled for 15, and
heavy into apologetics. I saw myself in the
Truman show, and it's interesting because I saw the opposite
of what you saw. I felt like God treated me just like Christoff (Christophany)
treated Truman: He says he loves Truman, and he gives Truman the "perfect
life", but at the same time, he does everything he can to keep
Truman from the things he really wants, not that they are evil, they
just aren't in God's "perfect plan". When Truman started questioning
based on the reality that he was seeing, everybody told him he was crazy.
The more I prayed and cooperated with God and the church, the more exploited
and abused I became. When I questioned it or got counseling, they told
me it was just demons. All my "friends" told me the words
of the Holy Spirit, just like Truman's "friend" did, designed
to keep him there. It was so scary to leave, I would go to hell and
God's wrath would be on me. But if to stay would be unbearable sadness
in Jesus' "abundant life". Everything I ever wanted he destroyed
in my life. Like a loving husband and a home. I am glad that I have
walked away from God and Jesus's saving blood. Now I have peace. Now
I have control over my destiny. I am no longer plagued by guilt and
fear. I thought the film was in reality anti-religous. I think you are
twisting it to say that Christoff was "anti-Christ". He was
the perfect image of Christ. He gave Truman life, and he would take
it away in an instant to keep him in line. Just like Jehovah who practices
genocide, germ warfare, chemical warfare, and regualry kills babies
to punish the sins of their fathers (which means he's a liar - an imperfect
sinner). And Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
-Kizu
MyResponse:
Dear Kizu: What "Christian" group were you in? Yes,
the Truman Show was your experience. No one can deny you your
experience. It is hard for me to imagine a good Christian group that
would side track honest questions with dismissals like "you'll
go to hell" or "that's demonic." This is unholy
and demonic and very much anti-Christ. I am glad you left that
repressive group. May God sent their narrow minded repressive ideas
to hell!
You say you are free and yet your comments exhibit a lot of anger -perhaps,
even towards God. I saw the film Rapture the other day. Your comments
bring it back to mind. It is about a young woman (Mimi Rodgers)
who tells God she does not want to go to his heaven because of
all the suffering he allowed in the world. Is this you? If it is good!
Jacob in the Bible was renamed Israel because he wrestled with God!
The name of God's people in Hebrew scriptures is "Israel"
and it means "those who wrestle with God."
Please continue in your spiritual struggle with God. Don't give up.
It's important. Keep asking the tough question. And, for your
own sake, stay away from repressive cultist groups that paint
God's world like the Truman show. I am glad you got out. Now explore
what God will do now! You are Truman at heaven's door about to enter
the real world.
Your comment was to long for the guest book so I moved it to the Truman
page. Please e-mail me your additional thoughts. I would love
to continue this dialog. And maybe post it as we go along. Your life
and thoughts are very, very important
Yours in the struggle,
David Bruce

DISNEY'S
TRON -THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE
Hello. I really enjoyed your site. I didn't know there was anyone else
"out there" who enjoyed finding references to the gospel in
films. I guess the film that got me started on this was "Tron,"
that Disney film made many years ago that used a lot of computer animation.
I saw tons of references to Jesus in the film -- so much so that I was
wondering if the authors were Christians and had tried to tell the gospel
in a new and refreshing way... or if it was just coincidence.
Well, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the insights
I found at your site. I plan to return often.
Steve
MY RESPONSE: The writers
of Tron are Bonnie MacBird and Steven Lisberger. MacBird was
the second assistant director for The First Nudie Musical (1976).
She has written nothing else that I know of. Lisberger wrote
and directed Slipstream (1989), Hot Pursuit (1987) and Animalympics
(1979). Slipsteam and Hot Pursuit have plot lines similar to Tron.
The Biblical connections in Tron are probably not by design.
But, they are there. Coincidence? I don't think so. It's
impossible to be a part of western culture and not be influenced by
biblical story lines, themes and characters. Indeed, the truth is
out there! I have always thought of Tron as an important film
because it was one the first to use CGI. Thank you for
your kind thoughts and encouragement. I really appreciate it.

THE
BEST FILMS
David, What did you think of the "100 Best List" that came
out today? As everybody else, I have quarrels with much of it. "I
can't believe they included ..." "What about ... ?" I
suppose the real question is compiling a list at all. What do you think
of putting together a similar list of say 50 (probably couldn't come
up with a hundred), greatest faith-based films that ask life's essential
questions with integrity? That might be a interesting and stimulating
project. Perhaps you could ask your visitors (17K already in June!)
to make some nominations. For starters I suggest: Chariots of Fire,
Tender Mercies, Dead Man Walking, The Ten Commandments, Sling
Blade, Shawshank Redemption, Black
Robe, The Mission, Places in the Heart, A Wonderful Life, The
Apostle, Shadowlands, The Crucible.
I really appreciate your inclusion of the ancient
creeds into your site. That is quite remarkable (and courageous).
So much of American Evangelical faith is all "me and my personal
relationship with Jesus" and is completely negligent -- or scornful
-- of the doctrine of the church. In truth, ours is a received faith,
both from the Holy Spirit enlightened Word, and from the great cloud
of witnesses who have gone before and handed on to us a rich legacy
of theology and faith and song that we build on. We stand on great shoulders
all the better to be able to see the challenges of our new day. -John
Schuurman
MY RESPONSE: Yes let's do
it. A top 50 or 100 list of great faith films. In fact I
have stated a "Top Great Films" page that lists all
the suggestions of our viewers. So here it is, dear viewers,
e-mail me with your
top films and we'll put the list together.

SOME HUMOR
Dear David, We received the following in an e-mail recently and I thought
you would appreciate the humor of it. "Dear Lord, So far today, God,
I've done all right. I haven't gossiped, haven't lost my temper, haven't
been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or over indulgent. I'm really glad
about that. But in a few minutes, God, I'm going to get out of bed, and
from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help."
Have a great Week! Love and prayers, Sister Anne Marie, DHS

WHAT
ABOUT LANGUAGE AND NUDITY?
David, I haven't had a chance to scope Hollywood Jesus all out
yet, but I did notice that you accurately pointed out that when people
die, according to the Bible, they do not become angels as Hollywood
is so often presenting in their films. In looking over a few of the
reviews, I thought it would be nice to have a little more information
on the level of "language" and the like in the films. Some
of the movies in the reviews we've seen and been a little disappointed
to have some naked woman on the screen before you know it. Say, what
is your impression about that kind of stuff and the Bible? It seems
that there are some parallels between movie scripts and Bible themes,
but what about all of the language violence and nudity? Just curious
to see what you think about that. It seems that a lot of producers are
anxious to get that kind of stuff in their movies for a rating instead
of develop a cool story line. That would be some good info to include
in your reviews :) I'll keep scoping your site out. Thanks for letting
me know about it. Later bro. Chuck
MY RESPONSE: I do NOT like
foul language and nudity for shock sake. There are several "Christian"
movie review sites on the web that point such things out. Most
seem to have a preoccupation with the exact number of profanities
and bare female breasts. Perhaps this is necessary to keep the
heat on Hollywood to clean up its act, but this is not the purpose
of Hollywood Jesus. "We would see Jesus." In
my second line I put "Christian" in quotes because I don't
believe being moralistic is the same as being Christian. These
moralistic reviews seem to have a obsession with the female anatomy
and describe such scenes in graphic detail. It makes me wonder
where these obviously male reviewers are coming from. If there
are any Bible parallels in the movies they are generally blind to
them. I have a few of these moralistic sites listed in my
links page. Check them out and you will see what I mean.
It's really sad. The truth is the film industry is not Christian
and it is not moral by Church standards. But then it never claimed
to be, or even wanted to be. And everyone knows this! If
you watch Hollywood films you will see the glorification of violence
and immorality. Hollywood Jesus is not judgmental, its about
Jesus. Hollywood Jesus looks at our culture and points to those
areas that intersect with God's story. I have put together a
page on moralistic vs. Christian, check
it out.

GOT
PICTURES?
Dear Bruce, I entered in your Homepage and I enjoyed it really because
I shared your thoughts. I think like you and I liked your comments about
films. Since I was child I enjoy Superman-the
movie and I love its history and the History (the Jesus' history).
Sometimes I thought like you about the Bible and the movie. It is interesting
that comparison that you made. The pictures that you put in your
site were very good for the explanation and improve your comments. Congratulations!
I ask you that send me those pictures or say me where I can get them.
I need those pictures really! I am waiting for your reply. Since now
I thank you in advance!
Carlos
MY RESPONSE: Sorry Carlos,
there is no place that I know of to get the pictures I use.
I rarely use promotional pictures. Most of the film images
used in Hollywood Jesus come directly from the films being reviewed.
My only copies are in my computer as low resolution files and are
unsuitable for hard copy. Feel free to download my images from
my reviews for your own personal use. Simply right click the image
with your mouse and select "Save Image As."

HOLLYWOOD
JESUS IS SACRILEGIOUS
Hollywood Jesus, I think it is sacrilegious, and depicts Jesus
the way he didn't intend to be depicted. Granted I'm sure you didn't
intend it to be like that. Drawing is nice, but why can't you draw him
as he was actually seen, and depicted?
MY RESPONSE: I don't know
what picture of Jesus you are referring to and how would we know what
Jesus looked like?
Hollywood Jesus, The picture's that were
actual seen of him. i.e. the Shroud of Turin, or Veronica's Vail.
MY RESPONSE: Oh, I see!
I don't know how to respond to you. I am an artist and a preacher,
therefore, I am glad for all the many and various literary,
musical and pictorial impressions of Jesus that we have. The
Shroud of Turin has an amazing history. But, I am glad it is
not the only impression of Jesus we have.

CITY
OF ANGELS
Hello David, Well I was with Gayle Logan yesterday we spent all day
together and we saw the movie CITY OF ANGELS!!
I noticed it also that the angels was dress in black which was very
interesting! I love the movie It was very Good and it tells that angels
do exists!!! Gayle told me that she wants to see the movie again she
thought it was wonderful!! I love the part where Seth dies for Maggie
to become human kinda like what Jesus did for us on earth and on the
cross! Well I do love romantic movies!! Well I am sending you my thoughts!!
May God Bless you David! Carrie
MY RESPONSE: There are so
many things in that film and yet it is simple. There was a scene
in the film on how prayers are heard. And you are right about
Seth, there is a small parallel to Jesus here. There is an ancient
saying that says, "He became what we are so we can become what
He is."
Been checking out your website
today, and really enjoying it. You've struck a good balance in the
"in the world, not of it" arena, by holding on to truth
without knee-jerk condemnation of everything that doesn't come from
Christian origins.
Attached below are some thoughts I offered on City
of Angels out on Usenet a few weeks ago. Thought they might interest
you.
EDITOR: Click here to go to City of Angels
page to read Brendt's review. It is very good.

GRAPES
OF WRATH
David, The Grapes of Wrath is just full of
Biblical allusions, we are doing a project on Allusions in the book
for school, thanks for your input.
MY RESPONSE: Your welcome.
Other visitors may want to check out the allusions in the famous Grapes
novel. Look for a Movie review on the film version soon.

DEEP
IMPACT
David, Be sure to check out DEEP IMPACT
a lot of biblical references. great message and its an awesome film
in general. Hey by the way you still want to do a story on independent
Christian filmmakers? I'm definitely willing to help out.
Danial Panzella
MY RESPONSE: Danial: Thanks
for writing!
Item 1. Yes, I just saw Deep Impact!
The Messiah-ship, Noah's Ark and the President giving a biblical
blessing to all of America! Incredible. Wow! Look for a review
on Deep Impact in Current
Films later today. Check it out and tell me what you think.
Item 2. Yes, do it. The sooner the better. I appreciate your offer.
In Him,
David Bruce
Just saw it tonight with
our kids. BIG mistake to take our kids. The language was not suitable
for kids under 13 or any age, in my opinion. It was very emotionally
moving for me, since my mom just died on May 11,1998. It was too scary
for our kids. Teens and adults are the best audience for this movie.
I was glad to hear the president talking about God and praying to
Him. No mention of "Jesus Christ" and His SAVING grace &
mercy though. That would be a GREAT touch. But, for those of us Christians,
Deep Impact would be a good evangelizing the unsaved and backsliden.
I must admit though it did cause me to examine my walk with Jesus.
I'd like to see a movie where profanity, sex, etc. was down played
more.

DEATH
IN FILMS
David: I'm writing a paper for a sociology. My topic is how death is
portrayed in Hollywood. That is, how top movie studios are "scared"
to make a serious movie about death. How they like to make everything
a "happy" ending. The seem to feel that the public cannot
deal with aspects of death. Although foreign films seem to take the
chance and make for thought provoking films. For example there were
two versions of the movie The Vanishing, in the original Dutch version
the killer gets his way and kills everyone, even the '"good guys",
however in the American production, the "good guy" gets away
and kills the "bad guys." The funny thing about this is that
both versions were done by the same director!
Well what I need is some help in gathering information on how death
is portrayed in American and foreign films. Can you help me? I really
haven't seen many foreign films to use as comparisons. Thank you.
-Lisban
MY RESPONSE: Dear Lisban,
There is no difference between foreign and American films in terms
of death. There is a difference between Big Budget American film and
low budget foreign films. Big studios need their investment back and
a profit. So, happy endings are common. However, Titanic
is a big budget death film that worked, even though all the critics
said it would fail. Perhaps, there will be a new approach to death
in big budget films. Deep Impact also
has significant people dying in each others arms at the end of the
film. In Armageddon this may be true,
too. In Twister (pre-Titanic), aside from the dad at the start and
the woman in the middle of the film, only the bad guys die at the
end of the film. Usually death in big budget films, especially at
the end of the film, has to do with a justice issue. Note: death at
the beginning of a film has to do with injustice. Big budget films
are designed to make money, not lose it. That is the difference.
One of the best foreign films on death is Ingmar Bergman's "The
Seventh Seal" (also, Bergman's "Through
A Glass Darkly"). Go rent them. Most Blockbuster and Hollywood
Video stores have them. Go to the public library and check out a couple
of books on Bergman you'll get some great quotes from them. He was
the first to deal with death and afterlife in a new and significant
way.

THE JUDAS
PROJECT
Hey David, There is a movie that I would like to see reviewed: The
Judas Project. I thought it was very good! It tells
the story of Jesus in contemporary time! It is so amazing nowadays
that more movies are about Christ! WOW!!!! Also, please do
a review on Jesus Christ superstar! I saw it with a friend of mine it
was good also!
God Bless! Carrie Kritcher
MY RESPONSE: At some
future date there will be a page on all the films that tell the story
of Jesus. This will include the two you mentioned. Thanks
for the suggestion. David.

FILMMAKER
IN NYC
David,Your site was awesome. I am an independent filmmaker from NYC.
I produce Christian films. Your site was great. I look forward to future
reviews. Its one of my fave sites.
I was in shock when I saw the Hollywood Jesus sign in the top left corner.
Check out this page and you'll see why, read the article. I'm sure you'll
enjoy it.
http://members.aol.com/anglprod/thevision.html
I would like to put a link to your site on mine, if that's alright with
you.
Great work. God Bless
Danial A. Panzella
MY RESPONSE: Please tell
me more about independant Christian film makers. I would love to do
a section in HollywoodJesus on them. And, yes I do understand why
you were shocked. May God bless you in all your efforts.

GREAT
JOB
Great job David! Enjoyed your site. The graphics are lavish and well
structured. I'll bet you have a tiger by the tail to maintain it, but
if it reaches people I suspect such upkeep costs are well worth it.
The attempt to load my comments and sign your guest book failed several
times so I am sending email instead.
Blessings friend. Max
MY RESPONSE: The guest book
doesn't work? I'll have to check into that. Thanks for the good words.
It is a lot of work. But, it's fun and I enjoy it. I also consider
it part of my ministry. As you know I have thought about Christ in
culture for years.
P.S. Max, I just signed
the guest book for you and it worked. I copied/pasted your comments,
entered your name and pressed the button and then the submit button.
Perhaps the site was down when you tried? No matter, it works now.
Thanks for sharing the problem with me. I appreciate all corrections
and comments.

WHO
DOES YOUR WEB SITE?
Hey you guys---I just found your website..surprised to see David's picture,
and realized it was really David.. very well done.. who did your site???
-Berrenda.
MY RESPONSE: I have done
everything. Believe it or not, it was this past January that I sent
my first e-mail message! Then, at the end of February I am on the
web with this website. I'm a fast learner. Books by Laura Lemay helped.
My artistic talent, computer background and commercial graphics experience
has made doing web pages very natural for me. Also, see the copyright
page for a list of all the programs I use to construct Hollywood
Jesus.

RATE
THE MOVIES
Hi, it would be good for you to include movie ratings on your reviews.
Our family does not go to "R" rated movies at all. We have
an obligation as Christians, to participate in the viewing of
all entertainment as though Christ was sitting in that movie seat or
couch right next to us. If a story line includes language or behavior
or situations which we would not want Christ to see or be a part of,
then we believe that it is not right for our family to be a part of!!
We have never viewed the portrayal of sin for entertainment purposes
as a healthy alternative for boredom! Thank you, Mrs. C
MY RESPONSE: Ouch! What
a zinger! That hurt! But, good for you. Family is always first next
to Christ. I thank God for your wonderful commitment. There is a lot
of garbage out there. Why bring it into our homes? I agree to some extent
with you. My purpose, however, is not to be family guide. There are
web sites for that. I am surprised you evaluated all my hard work and
study by that criteria. My purpose is to use the popular media to help
people know the Lord. And, I do watch R rated movies with Christ sitting
right there! Praise God. A real sinner, wine bibber and publican outreach
opportunity! Jesus is pleased and smiles on me. Just as Jesus smiles
on you in your excellent commitment as a loving and caring mother. May
God bless you, my dear sister in Christ. David (by God's grace).
REPLY: Hi David, I did not mean to evaluate
your hard work in any light, other than the fact that I spent a moment
this morning on your website! When I noticed the lack of movie ratings,
I wanted to bring it up to you- I CERTAINLY DID NOT MEAN TO ZING YOU
OR TO OFFEND!! I apologize to you if I gave that impression!
My husband and I do feel very strongly however, about the entertainment
we participate in (he works in the industry) and we do share our views
with others on a regular basis. I do appreciate the obvious hard work
that you put forth on this website. Best of luck to you!

MOVIES ARE
MORE SPIRITUAL
Dear David, It is so amazing to me David how you can connect Hollywood
with Jesus. More and more movies that are coming out that are spiritual!
I think its great that more movies are connected with God and Jesus.
Amazing, really amazing! Thanks for opening my eyes to see! Your doing
a outstanding job Keep it up! Blessings to you! Carrie Kritcher |

"...they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My
prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect
them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of
it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth," John 17:14-17
(NIV).
After reading the article, "Two Vegetables with Big Ideas" in
the current issue of Computing Today (see "What's New," below),
something that stands out to me is VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer's
vision for his animations. He quotes Roaring Lambs author Bob Briner in
his assessment of Hollywood and the media, and says, "Churches focus
on sending missionaries overseas, but never to Hollywood." Vischer
is doing his part to reach the world, particularly children, for Christ
through VeggieTales or various media.
There are newspaper columnists, politicians, writers, actors, athletes,
and other public figures who are Christians. However, it seems to me that
the number of Christians in mainstream media is still small.
I remember when the controversy over the TV show Ellen was in full-swing,
and a Christian leader was quoted as saying he'd like to see a television
show about a conservative Christian, instead of so many out there that
portray characters with non-Christian values. The response he got was,
"Why not?"
Indeed, why not? Who or what is to stop Christians from penetrating the
mainstream, secular media with their thoughts, ideas, and opinions about
life?
"We are reluctant to urge our children to be excellent photojournalists,
film makers, TV reporters, computer game programmers, or writers -- but
we love to send them on a missions trip," says the Computing Today
article. Without diminishing the overwhelming need for missions in other
countries around the world, let us not forget the need for a mission here
in our own backyard --on our television sets, radios, and online.
In Christ,
