Teen pregnancy is lowest in 60 years! Can you believe it?

Can you believe it? Teenagers are having babies at the lowest rate in the last 60 years. For every 1,000 girls ages 15 to 19 there were 49.6 birth last year. This is the lowest level ever recorded! Statistics only go back sixty years.

"Teenagers frankly are more conservative sexually," says Bill Albatross, spokesperson for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.

The teen birth rate fell across racial lines with the biggest drop among black teens, whose rate dropped 38 percent from 1991 to 1999!

"In the past, abstinence was a joke," said Bronwyn Mayden, executive director of Campaign for Our Children, which promotes abstinence. But now "it's not a joke -it's okay. Kids are really concerned about catching STDs."

This encouraging trend is really interesting because, many sincere social commentators have felt that the media's glamorization and promotion irresponsible sexuality has led to an ever increasing amount of teen pregnancy. Just the opposite is true. Despite a certain media glamorization of irresponsible sexuality, teen pregnancy has gone down.

Is God at work here?

I think this is part of a profound culture shift that is taking place.

It was William Bennet who said a few months back, "It is time for us to grow up, face reality, and admit there is some good news here."

Children in single parent families are on the decline (25% of children in 1985, 18.3% in 1999).

There are more fathers in the home.

Divorce is leveling off -maybe headed for a happy turn around.

Some evidence shows that the decline in marriage is slowing, maybe even declining.

There is less sexual activity among teens.

Even crime is down.

And, God is suddenly popular.

Something is happening here. What do you think?
