SPIRITUAL CONNECTIONS
12 Spiritual Issues

From a spiritual point of view, this film addresses so many issues.
1. Identity

Dear Heavenly Father:
I’m working on a puzzle, pure and simple.
It is I.

Dear Searching Child:
Here’s the answer to your puzzle, pure and simple.
It is I.
--ETHELYN A. SHATTUCK

2. Assumptions

Don’t judge a tree by its bark.
--FRENCH PROVERB

3. Appearances
All is not gold that glitters.
--DAVID GARRICK (1717–1779)

4. Fatherhood

Fathering is a marathon, not a sprint.
--PAUL L. LEWIS

5. The impact of divorce

So many persons who think divorce a panacea for every ill find out when they try it that the remedy is worse than the disease.
--DOROTHY DIX (1870–1951)

6. Creativity

Creative force, like a musical composer; goes on unweariedly repeating a simple air or theme, now high, now low, in solo, in chorus, ten thousand times reverberated till it fills earth and heaven with the chant.
--RALPH WALDO EMERSON (1803–1882)

7. Self preservation

Our acceptance before God is complete and secure even when we are disappointed in ourselves.
--ERWIN W. LUTZER

8. Stick-to-itiveness

Where the willingness is great, the difficulties cannot be great.
--NICCOLÒ MACHIAVELLI (1469–1527)

9. Fraud

Openness is to wholeness as secrets are to sickness.
--BARBARA JOHNSON

10. Justice

It is impossible to be just if one is not generous.
--JOSEPH ROUX (D. 1794)

11. Human evil

Evil can never be undone, but only purged and redeemed.
--DOROTHY L. SAYERS (1893–1957)

12. Human goodness

All our goodness is a loan; God is the owner.
--SAINT JOHN OF THE CROSS (1542–1591)
BIBLICAL CONNECTIONS

Click to enlargeAbagnale is captured and he serves prison time, but is released early when he finds grace from Hanratty who employees him as an FBI agent in charge of check fraud.

There is new life. There can be new beginnings.

And so the film ends with the best connecting points:
1. There is a hound of heaven, who cares.

Francis Thompson’s The Hound of Heaven, his best poem and best known, is generally regarded as one of the finest odes in English literature, in spite of its rather ornate language. In the poem the fugitive sinner seeks to escape the relentless pursuit of God, but the divine love is greater than the sin of man—the hunted is finally brought to bay.

"God comes padding after me like a Hound of Heaven."
--MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE (1903–1990)

2. Although each of us sins, there is grace.

Romans 6:23 -Message Translation
Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God's gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.

3. There is new life.

John 10:10 -Message Translation
A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.
