It is rather difficult to pin down exactly what is wrong with director Terry Gilliam’s new film The Brothers Grimm, but if I had to choose one adjective to describe it, it would be “disjointed.” One thing Gilliam does appear certain of in this film, however, is his perspective on the spiritual realm.

SYNOPSIS
Click to enlarge"The Brothers Grimm," from director Terry Gilliam ("Brazil," "The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen"), stars Matt Damon and Heath Ledger as Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, the legendary brothers who gave us our favorite fairy tales. The film follows them on an enchanted adventure set in a world of heroes and villains, witches and trolls, undying evil and true love, - a realm the two storytellers thought was just make believe... until it came into their world to get them. Now the Brothers Grimm are about to confront all that their imaginations brought to life, as they are caught up in an epic battle between fantasy and reality.

The Brothers Grimm is weird. Visually pleasing, but weird. If you saw Time Bandits, and recognize the work of Terry Gilliam, than you’re probably prepared before you get to the theater. Realistically, if you reflect on the ‘real-life’ story of two brothers who wrote stories about an old woman who shoves children into a stove or a woman who didn’t cut her hair for years…strange is key.

And you’d probably be right! With Will and Jake Grimm (Damon and Ledger), the adventures are more fantastic than true, but truth always seems to find a way into the forefront by the end of these fables, on paper or the silver screen.

Not only does he affirm it, he seems to suggest that we ignore it to our peril—although he is far too cagey to come right out and say so.

20.jpg (48 K)To summarize briefly, the film is about Jake and Will Grimm, two brothers who travel the German countryside during the late 1800s conning ignorant peasants into believing they can rid their villages of enchanted creatures. They have a good time of it until the French occupying forces catch on to their ruse. Once captured, the Grimms are presented with a choice: Either help the French uncover who or what is causing young girls to disappear from a nearby village or… die. Being sensible blokes, the Grimms take door number one.
