The Ponderous Ponderosa of Brokeback Mountain
I saw it, and I’m not gay. I know that a strange contingent of the Christian community seems to think that by the mere watching of a film like Brokeback Mountain, with its “communist propaganda” and “homosexual agenda” a straight guy might develop a queer eye, but nothing could be further from the truth

So, the question was, why didn’t I like it? The easiest answer—it had so much hype, so much buzz, and so many preconceived notions about how “good” it was going to be, there was no way it could’ve lived up to what I expected. Decent answer.

Those of us who have labeled Brokeback Mountain as “the gay cowboy love story” have it wrong—Dead Wrong. It’s not a movie about cowboys. It’s not a love story. It’s not even a movie about gay men. Instead, it’s a movie about a subject that haunts all of us regardless of gender, culture, spiritual beliefs or sexual orientation.

It’s a film about isolation. (continued)

MIKE FURCHES
Brokeback Mountain was a movie that I was actually looking forward to seeing. To see it on the weekend of the HJAG along with Chris Utley and Elisabeth Leitch, fellow reviewers from Hollywood Jesus, was almost a moment of euphoria— after all, we had the nice little meal from Bill's Bar and Pub across the street and everything was almost perfect. I should have seen the foreshadowing that lay ahead when a seagull resting on the eaves of the Egyptian Theater in Seattle decided to use my shirt sleeve as a toilet. (continued)

ROUNTABLE DISCUSSION
In light of the success and overwhelming controversy of "Brokeback Mountain", here are a few questions to ponder:
1. Are you planning to see the film?
2. What are your thoughts on it's success?
3. What's the best way to intergrate Christ into the discussion of this film -- without taking the "been there, done that" route of rehashing Old Testament scriptures and of gay-bashing and denigration disguised as "telling the truth in love?

I expect you already know that this is “the gay cowboy movie.”
For some people, that is all they need to know to decide not to see it. Pity, because if you only look at the film at that narrow perspective, you miss one of the most engaging films of the year.
