The
Bourne Identity
by Robert Ludlum
Jason Bourne. He has no past. And he may have no future. His memory
is blank. He only knows that he was flushed out of the Mediterranean
Sea, his body riddled with bullets. There are a few clues. A frame
of microfilm surgically implanted beneath the flesh of his hip.
Evidence that plastic surgery has altered his face. Strange things
that he says in his delirium -- maybe code words. Initial: "J.B."
And a number on the film negative that leads to a Swiss bank account,
a fortune of four million dollars, and, at last, a name: Jason Bourne.
But now he is marked for death, caught in a maddening puzzle, racing
for survival through the deep layers of his buried past into a bizarre
world of murderous conspirators -- led by Carlos, the world's most
dangerous assassin. And no one can help Jason Bourne but the woman
who once wanted to escape him. "Mr.
Ludlum stuffs more surprises into his novels than any other six-pack
of thriller writers combines." -- The New York Times

| SYNOPSIS
"He
was the perfect weapon until he became the target." |
One
of the most popular and durable of motion picture genres, the espionage
thriller gets a fresh and altogether contemporary approach in Universal
Pictures' The Bourne Identity. Director Doug Liman, acclaimed for
his edgy signature films, Swingers and Go, infuses Robert Ludlum's
1980 espionage yarn with an unconventional sensibility, and presents
Academy Award® winner Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting, The
Talented Mr. Ripley, Ocean's Eleven)
as a new breed of spy movie hero.
Filmed entirely overseas, in locations including Prague, Paris and
Italy, The Bourne Identity boasts an international cast headed by
Franke Potente (Run, Lola, Run), and Chris Cooper (American
Beauty, October Sky).
The story opens as an amnesiac (Damon) is rescued at sea by the
crew of an Italian fishing boat. Nearly dead, he carries nothing
but the bullets in his back and the Swiss bank account number embedded
in his hip. Although completely without identity or background,
he possesses an array of extraordinary talents in fighting, linguistics
and self-defense that speak of a dangerous past. In the present,
he is disoriented and wary as he is propelled into an urgent search
to discover who he is and why his life has taken this perilous turn.
A Zurich safe deposit box yields an assortment of passports, a hefty
load of cash, an automatic weapon and a name ... Jason Bourne …
with a Paris address. What it means remains a mystery, but Bourne
quickly realizes that although he knows no one, there are people
who recognize him – and do not wish him well. When he meets
Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente), a hard-luck German-born wanderer,
he makes a desperate pitch – $10,000 for a ride to Paris.
Despite her reservations, Marie takes the cash and begins a journey
with Bourne that changes her life forever.
The trail of Jason Bourne’s past snakes from Europe to CIA
headquarters in Langley, Virginia, where Treadstone, a controversial
clandestine operation is based. As Bourne and Marie struggle to
stay below the radar in France, all of the stealthy muscle of Treadstone
is focused on tracking them and neutralizing Bourne as quickly and
efficiently as possible. |

THIS
FILM ASKS ALL THE BASIC QUESTIONS OF LIFE!
Can
you believe this film?
Wow!
What an incredible film experience!
Run, don't walk and go see this one!
It is brimming with spiritual quest!
From
a spiritual point of view this film is a rare treat . A cinematic
feast.
It
begins with a man floating as if dead in the Mediterranean Sea
(highly symbolic: birth from a watery grave!). After being saved
by a passing ship, he awakes with amnesia and wonders... (-are
you ready for this?-) ..."WHO AM
I?" Jason Bourne asks the most basic of all human
questions! Notice again the title of this film, Bourne Identity.
Then
he wonders, "WHY AM I HERE?".
In Jason's case he finds himself in the middle of the sea, surrounded
by nothing! He begins life with a blank slate and his only clue
is a identification number, which is found implanted in his
hip (parallel, perhaps, to our DNA code. We all have a different
number and identity). With this number he hopes to discover
who he is and why he was alone in the middle of the sea.
And
this is not all! Next he wonders: "WHERE
AM I GOING?" He even pulls a map off the wall to
underscore the question.
Next,
in his quest for identity and place, Jason asks: "WHERE
I AM FROM?"
"Where
is my home?" he wonders! Moreover, in his search for home
he discovers that he has been blessed with many gifts and talents
--But where did these come from?
Unfortunately
Jason also learns that he has a tainted past -he was an assassin
-HE WAS A SINNER. His past sins
threaten to create separation in the only friendship he has.
HE NEEDS REDEMPTION AND SALVATION
from the past to gain new life.
His
past sin has resulted in his present death sentence. The evil
ones are after him to take his life. "The wages of sin
is death." HOW CAN HE BE SAVED?
Salvation
begins with a relationship with Marie (a variant of Mary) who
is unconditional in her favor and kindness (grace) towards Jason.
REDEEMING LOVE.
Jason
goes on a quest for truth. He needs to know who he is, where
he is from, where he is going, and who his enemy is. As truth
comes to light the darkness is dispelled. The evil ones are
defeated. TRUTH SETS HIM FREE.
I
was absolutely blown away by this film. Writer and producer
Robert Ludlum has come up with a character whose search embodies
all the fundamental questions of life. Can you imagine an espionage
film that explores such profound yet basic questions? I think
I had a religious experience just sitting there in the movie
theater!
To
top the whole thing off, the ending scene gives us a heavenly
point of view as the camera's eye sweeps over the crest of a
hill crowned by a Church (and a cross) and takes us past the
heights to a seaside paradise where a born again Jason Bourne
is reunited with Marie. This is life on the other side of the
cross. PARADISE HAS BEEN RESTORED. Winter
(death) is over and spring (new life) is here.
For
the spiritually minded this is an amazing film.

A man is found floating in the ocean, barely alive. Fished out
of the sea and revived by fishermen, he has no clue of who he
is except for two bullets in his back and a Swiss bank account
number. Slowly, building on these clues, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon)
is able to piece together his identity. A stream of gun-toting
killers who are after him makes his task more difficult - and
Jason has no idea why he is a target. The only person he trusts
is Marie (Franka Portente), a young woman he hired to drive him
from Switzerland to Paris. Marie is by association under surveillance
too, and she is stuck with Bourne until he can get the mess straightened
out.
What
I liked about this movie was the revelation of Jason's character
and life. The movie did a good job of doling out new information
and giving a sense of loss and confusion, just like Jason was
feeling. It was an entertaining movie and fun to watch; the best
scene was the car chase in the mini. It didn't exactly keep me
hanging on the edge of my seat and I did find the violence particularly
harsh, but that may have been the terribly loud volume in the
theatre. If I were to compare it to another recent spy movie,
Spy Game, I would say that Spy Game
is the better movie. It had more depth of plot and character and
it wasn't as "Hollywood" in feel. Nevertheless, The
Bourne Identity is a good summer action flick, and worth seeing.
Warning! Spoiler ahead.
The
underlying message of the movie was interesting, however, the
title of this film is a dead give away. This movie is
all about identity and figuring out who you are. Jason
Bourne has no identity and he feels an intense need to find out
who he is. But as Jason learns what he was, he doesn't like what
he finds. Jason Bourne is a highly trained spy and assassin for
the US government.
The process of rediscovery and finally rejection of his
former self is Bourne's redemption. The creation of a
new identity begins before Bourne loses his memory. In the final
flash of remembrance, Bourne walks away from a job. He refuses
to kill the target because he sees him surrounded by his children.
The cold-blooded killer has a conscience and a heart - and it
almost costs him his life. Bourne is shot in the back as he flees
the scene and falls into the ocean.
This
movie is about redemption and rebirth. In the opening
scenes of the movie, Jason Bourne is brought back to life; it
is a rebirth of a new man with a
clean slate. He has erased his past. As Jason learns about his
past life and work he rejects the old Bourne and creates a new,
identity. The old Bourne was a machine, a 30 million dollar weapon,
with no feeling. He was trained to do as he was told, with no
thought of his own well-being. In his new identity, Jason is far
from perfect but he is a better, kind and more conscientious person.
The final proof is that Jason is able to fall in love with Marie
and rejoin a real existence. She is able to see him as the new
person and forget about his past wrongs. Bourne slams the coffin
shut on his former self when he tells Cooper (Ted Conklin), "Jason
Bourne is dead." It is a final rejection
of his old self and the beginning of a new identity with Marie.
In a spiritual parallel, we go through the same process of death
and rebirth when we accept Jesus. Our old sinful self dies and
is replaced by a new birth, a new self made in the image of God.
Like Jason we still have remnants of an old, sin full self, that
directs in the wrong direction all the time. But there is also
the new sense of morality, righteousness and the desire to follow
God. God is our redemption and salvation. We can all be like Jason
and put away the guns, the solitary life, the cold-hearted thinking
and discover a greater thing - love.
