QUESTION:
ARE WE HELPLESS VICTIMS OF DESTINY?
SCRIPTURES
THAT SPEAK OF DESTINY:
"The
wise man's eyes are in his head, but the fool walks in darkness.
_E-mail
ow that one fate befalls them both." -Eccles. 2:14
NASB-U
"...also
we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according
to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will..."
-Ephes. 1:11 NASB-U
"In
fact, everything they did occurred according to your eternal will
and plan." -Acts 4:28 NLT
QUESTION:
SO ARE WE HELPLESS VICTIMS OF DESTINY?
If
God is sovereign, how can humans be free? If God knows about everything
in advance, does that mean that God forces things to be the way
they are?
The
problem with these questions is that they go beyond Scripture in
their desire to figure everything out. They ignore large portions
of Scripture that affirm human choice and the integrity of human
freedom.
CONSIDER
THIS SCRIPTURE:
"Today
I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings
and curses. I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you
make. Oh, that you would choose life, that you and your descendants
might live!" -Deut. 30:19
THE
BALANCE BETWEEN DESTINY AND FREEDOM
I am
convinced that God has given us freedom (the ability to chart our
course) and destiny (the unchangeable course of predetermined events).
In the last analysis, the way in which God's guidance of his creation
interfaces with human freedom is unknown to us. There is a mysterious
interplay between the two.
CHOOSING
AGAINST THE WILL OF GOD.
God
does not usually stop us from making choices that are against divine
will. God lets us declare our supposed independence from God, even
though God knows that in time we will become slaves to our own rebellious
choices-we will lose our freedom not to sin. There is no worse slavery
than slavery to sin (addictive things that control us).
Again,
"Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between
blessings and curses. I call on heaven and earth to witness the
choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, that you and your
descendants might live!"
So
that's my opinion.
