The bleak, cold, and dreary days of winter are about to become a thing of the past (at least for another year).  As the snow melts and the winds die down, hope is rekindled in the form of bright blue skies, colorful blooms of flowers, and the scents of honeysuckle and lavender.  It's a perfect time to enjoy nature, to go for a hike, or simply sit outside with a good book.

The month of March presents a number of fascinating offerings from talented authors.  Jodi Picoult brings a story about an autistic child in House Rules, while former Presidential candidate Mitt Romney outlines his plans for a better America with No Apologies.  If neither one of these authors interests you, perhaps a title from Clive Cussler, Harlan Coben, or Todd Bridges (from the comedy Diff'rent Strokes) might do the trick.  And if that fails, be sure to check out the LOST Library and the reviews that connect good literature to the maddening yet mysterious series now in its final season on ABC.

You'll notice a number of interviews on HJ this month with authors such as Erin Healy, Rob Bell, and Matthew Paul Turner.  We want you, the avid reader, to hear firsthand from the writers themselves, so we hope these will be both informative and interesting.  Let us know what you think in the Comments section of each interview!

So after the closing credits of the Academy Awards roll, be sure to stop by your local bookstore and see what's available in the literary world.  Who knows what you'll find?

Thanks (as always) for your support of Hollywood Jesus, as we present pop culture from a spiritual point of view.

The Dude Abides
A Misunderstood Pair
Darkness and light in the Coens' films
The Coen Brothers have made some messed up, turned around films that leave you needing a shower and wondering what in the world you just watched. But usually, maybe a day or two later, you end up recognizing the genius underneath the buckets of blood and profanity, the beauty of the razor-sharp violence, and the ethos of these brothers-the method to their madness.

Their Jewish background, theological considerations, joint sense of humor, and need to make things right all permeate their art, even if you can't see it at first.

In her book The Dude Abides, Cathleen Falsani documents the Coen Brothers' movies chronologically from 1984 to 2009. I've chosen to subdivide them into three groups: ones I've never heard of, ones that I've heard of but never seen, and ones that everyone has seen plastered over magazine covers and in commercials...

Thoughts on writing, spiritual suspense, and more

"When I think of suspense, in the Alfred Hitchcock kind of way," says Ted Dekker's latest writing partner, "I think of it as an emotional experience. Suspense engages our sense of anticipation and anxiety and hope that something will or won't happen. So, when I think of spiritual suspense, I mean all of those things but with another layer on top of it."
