If you are looking for a way to dive into scripture, but you aren’t the “reading” type, put your creative juices to work!  The Art of Bible Journaling is a step by step guide in basic concepts to turn your time in the word into a fantastic new process. The end result can be a Bible with personal journaling to reflect your study and creativity. As an added bonus, you can create a complete work of art. It is a worthy hobby growing in popularity among people of all ages, and I have found this book to be most inspiring!

Printed in full color, it keeps your interest fully, and every time you turn the page there is something new to learn. Some may be intimidated by the way the finished pages look or by the terminology, but that is quickly alleviated.

Worship and study through creativity is not something new. Musicians, authors, and artists do it all the time. Now through a well-planned guide, the author Erin Bassett offers it to you. The book is full of ideas on using mixed mediums and introduces the artist (that’s you!) to new and effective ways to express themselves in your journaling Bible.

The segments of the book discuss tools and supplies you may need to get started, and suggestions on new things you may have never tried before. It explains the different kinds of journaling Bibles so you can choose one that is right for you. The pages are simple in instruction and technique, giving step by step directions. There are over 60 ideas and 25 actual projects, all printed with step by step instructions. There is also an entire list of resources for supplies you may not know where to find. The resource page includes web sites of companies for specific items as well as popular publishers for journaling Bibles.

Inside the book, there are graphics, stickers, templates and traceable art to copy. Included are sticker tabs for all the books of the Bible, one way to kick off your bible journaling adventure. Some of the techniques you will learn include:

  • Stamping
  • Embossing
  • Doodling
  • Using gelatos
  • Masking
  • Fixing mistakes
  • Stenciling
  • Using spray inks
  • Decoupage
  • Hand lettering
  • Creating a stained glass effect
  • Journaling on the go
  • Painting with watercolors
  • Creating textures
  • Incorporating photos
  • Using pens and markers

The Art of Bible Journaling is about so much more than doodling in your bible. It is about using your quiet time in the word to express yourself in a whole new way. Even if you aren’t an “artist”, this is your bible, so it is only for you if you want it to be. It can turn into a lovely way to worship and remember the words we so desperately want to.

It can also be a way to share scripture with others, by sharing the experience of our journaling efforts with friends and family. Sitting down at a table with a couple of friends and pooling resources can be a helpful way to interact and learn about scripture together.

Consider the opportunities. Small groups can use this book as a guide for study. Churches can use it to promote women’s groups and include all generations. Families can put together a bible journaling brunch. Moms and daughters can work together at their dining room table. The possibilities are endless.

The Art of Bible Journaling would make a wonderful gift. Most of the projects can be started with just a couple simple supplies. You can get it at Erin’s website or at Amazon here.

I live on a small farm in rural Ohio with my husband and our family. Our garden is a mess, the laundry isn't ever all done, and someone always needs their mom. I spend a lot of time writing and reading, drinking coffee and being more like Jesus. These are the themes in my life and I wouldn't have it any other way.
