MY COMMENTS

The story plot is loaded with spiritual connects.

Imagine a world in which evil forces really do exist: A mother gives birth to a messianic child with a dual nature. The mother fights off a deadly venomous serpent-like bite as she fights to give birth. Does this sound familiar? Sounds biblical doesn't it? This is the story of Blade.

The story of Blade parallels a scripture found in Revelation 12:3-5 to some degree:

Then another portent (sign) appeared in heaven: a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, so that he might devour her child as soon as it was born. And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her child was snatched away and taken to God and to his throne. -NRSV

In Blade you are asked to imagine a world in which vampires really do exist. A mother gives birth to a messianic child with a dual nature, part vampire and part human. The mother fights against the venom of a vampire's bite as she struggles to give birth. Though noble, she dies in Childbirth.

Her son, Blade, grows up to become a great hunter of the Undead. His mission is to destroy the unholy evil that plagues the world. In other words, his mission is to save the world.

There is an Anti-Christ character named Deacon Frost (interestingly, the Anti-Christ figure in The Postman was also named Deacon). Frost is planning an apocalyptic event that will bring vampires to world supremacy and dominantion.

Blade sets out to rid the world of the evil with a sword and stakes in hand which represent the cross of Jesus.

HOW BLADE CAME ABOUT

"This isn't a vampire story," declares producer Peter Frankfurt. "It's an introduction to a phenomenal action hero, the likes of which we've never seen on the screen before. It's an encounter with a world audiences have never even imagined."

Blade was first introduced to comic book fans in 1973 as a supporting character in Marvel Comic's Tomb of Dracula. Over the years, the character was built into a franchise culminating earlier this year when he teamed with Spider Man.

One of the first African-American comic book heroes, it was this distinctive characteristic which attracted the attention of Frankfurt.

The producer had just finished Juice when he had a chance conversation with the head of Marvel Films about the absence of black superheroes in the comics. "A few days later I got a copy of the Blade comic book in the mail," Frankfurt said. The producer, who wasn't much of a comic aficionado at the time, was immediately intrigued by the idea of bringing Blade to the screen.

"Blade appealed to me because he's not your typical hero. He lives to kill vampires and exact vengeance," Frankfurt said.

"Blade has a dark side," confirms Executive Producer Stan Lee, who began his legendary career at Marvel in 1940 and is currently responsible for the company's movie, television and animation projects.

Frankfurt met with Lee and fellow Marvel executive Avi Arad, who suggested he contact Michael De Luca, president of production at New Line Cinema. De Luca, who acquired and developed a number of hit film properties based on comic books, including The Mask and Spawn, was instantly receptive to Frankfurt's idea for a feature film based on Blade. "Mike's reaction was a definitive 'Go,'" recalls the producer.

After acquiring the rights to the property, the filmmakers sought a writer who would connect with the complex, tormented superhero. They demanded a writer who would have an entirely original interpretation of Blade's tough, gritty world. Frankfurt and producer Bob Engelman were highly impressed with David S. Goyer, who had the right training and sensibility for the job.

Goyer wrote the martial arts packed, action adventure, Death Warrant, and the unearthly science fiction thriller The Crow: City of Angels. The writer was hired to pen the script for Blade, and he produced a first draft eight weeks later.

Goyer shared the producers' vision of the material. Blade had to have a completely fresh take on the vampire theme; it would defy all of the ordinary vampire clichés. And the script Goyer delivered was anything but ordinary.

According to Stan Lee, who is often disappointed in film adaptations of comic books, Goyer's screenplay didn't miss a beat. "He nailed it," proclaims Lee. "This is a very, very scary script, with a surprise on every page. The vampires are terrifying and fantastic at the same time. You've never seen anything like this before, anywhere," warns the Marvel executive.

THE CHARACTER AND STORY HAS VERY ANCIENT ROOTS
Subject: Blade
Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001
From: Sam SARASWATI@prodigy.net

Hello, I was reading your review on the movie Blade and as usual your observations were precise and right on target. I would like to support your review with some historical facts which are not commonly known but which the writer/s of the movie had some knowledge:

1. The Blade movie and the Biblical Book Of Revelations are similar stories; Revelations can be traced back to the more ancient African-Khamite and Afro-Asiatic epic of Heru (Horus) and Auset (Isis) versus Set(Satan, Typhon). Heru was called "Horus", "Heracles", and "Hero" by the ancient Greeks who learned of this story. The idea of a "Hero" has Africa as its source.

2. Set is an older Egyptian form of the name Satan which is Hebrew. Various pundits have revealed that Hebrew language of those times had Egyptian, Ethiopian, and other AfroAsiatic cultures as roots from which it sprung. One of the basic definitions of the name Satan is "Set come again." The people of the African continent understood that Set was defeated in one form and would regenerate in different forms to destroy mankind. Set was believed to have come many times in a human form to harm mankind.

3. I have written an article on the African origins of the St. George story. This article traces the story of St. George, St. Michael, and the Book of Revelations to those African roots. In the article I reveal how the Blade movie is symbol rich with ancient Khamitic (Egyptian) concepts. ***Readers are welcome to examine this article on the Contributing Authors' Section of the website TRUE STRENGTH: HERCULES AND AMAZON (http://pages.prodigy.net/saraswati/ ).

4. St. George's origins have there foundation in the Heru epic. The ancient Romans adopted the story of Heru, the hawk-helmeted Black hero who defeats Set (Satan). The Romans renamed this hero "George" and there are Roman statues of the hawk-headed George killing Set who has taken the form of a giant crocodile. This iconography is the same as that for Heru only the name was changed.

5. Blade is a modern version of the Heru Mythos and the writers were knowledgeable on this subject. The hint of this motif is even given in the name of the production company in the opening credits: Amen-Ra Productions. The crucifixion of Blade in the sarcophagus is the retelling of the death of Ausar (Osiris) who dies and is reborn as Heru. Also a standing sarcophagus represents the deceased pharoah as an Osiris who has risen again ( "He is risen.." ) in the form of his son Heru. The living Pharoah who takes the place of the deceased pharoah is designated as the Living Heru, responsible for maintaining the human condition and slaying all forms of Set. The pharoah was the historical prototype of St. George and Blade.

6. The word messiah is traceable to the Egyptian Mesiah who is the Chosen One and Anointed One of God (Ra). The pharoah was the messiah or mesiah of his people. Blade, the name corresponds to Heru whose epithets described him as 'the Man of Iron and Steel', 'Divine Blacksmith', 'Forger of Weapons', 'He who pierces, cuts, crushes, and binds Evil' with spear, sword, mace, and chains of 'divine iron.' ***Note here that the character Whistler is also a form of the Heru. There were three Herus in this movie making a divine trinity. The female physician is in the role of Auset (Isis) who was known as the Female Heru. Auset was famed as a physician, as a warrior-queen, she was said to have been the first to defeat Set in combat, and this was displayed on murals. Auset was quite the superheroine. ***The S-shaped boomerang blade that Blade used against the vampires is identical to the weapon used by Heru to kill Set and the legions of darkness. Ancient murals and statues show Heru in the act of throwing the S-blade at demons. Blade, like Heru made good use of fire to eliminate the vampires.

7. Blade's adversary, Deacon Frost is clearly a form of Satan (Set) incarnated in human guise, being the leader of the vampires, as well as being filled with the Spirit of the Blood God (spiritual form of Satan). This at first glance seems quite obvious, but there is more to this than meets the eye. Set (Satan) is described by ancient Cushites, Egyptians, Afro-Asiatics or Afro-Semites, Hindus, and South Americans with epithets which have the same translation - "the Great Vampire." They knew what they were talking about in attributing vampirism to the first vampire Satan. The ancient Greeks called Set (Satan) Typhon and the Hydra (the many headed Beast from the Sea), this creature is the same Leviathan of the Bible, the same vampire that Hercules defeated. In the movie, the slave wannabe vampires bear the mark of their owners (the Mark of the Beast) on their necks. Note that these markings resemble ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

In conclusion David Bruce, you are absolutely correct in your examination of the movie Blade! ***I noticed that a reader wrote you and was not aware that stakes and swords were "types of the cross" as you pointed out. This may help explain your observation. The ancient Egyptians had a cross sacred to Heru (Horus) the god of light called the Chr Amon, or handled cross or sword cross. The Greeks adopted a similar form of the cross joining the letters P (the English R) to an X (Chi). The result is the Chi-Ro Cross (Ch-R) whose meaning is Chres, Christos, Chrestos, Lord, and Christ. This cross was used by Emperor Constantine's Roman Empire, and Catholicism. In this cross you have the inverted sword (P) and the X ( another cross, two stakes or spears). You were correct, furthermore this reveals another observation of yours. ***That God by whatever the name individuals use has tried to tell the truth concerning its activities to save humanity. This God told some of its exploits to the so-called pagans that are unfortunately much maligned by some Christians. These ancient pagans were given cross to show this God's constant battle against Satan and his brood. The meaning of that cross has come across time to Christians with the full meaning revealed. Yes, God uses pagans too to reveal truth to the world. We should be more humble, less prejudiced, and more inquistive in our evaluation of ancient people. After all we're descended from them. My e-mail address is SARASWATI@prodigy.net
Again, your review of Blade hits the mark!
Sam

P.S. The physician in this movie was cast into the dark pit (Bottomless Pit), overcame another representation of Satan while in the pit, rose from the pit (ascension, resurrection), revived Blade with her own blood ( how like Auset who resurrected Heru from the dead and Jesus who shed His blood for humanity), found a form of a cure to vampirism, and proved herself to be a competent combatant against vampires. She is the modern version of Auset who was considered to be a Female Heru and Savior.

Here is another question about the mysterious Blade "soundtrack" with seemingly missing songs. I am wondering who performed the music they were playing "live" at the Black Pearl club in the movie. This is the music the Japanese Schoolgirls are singing and the Zaibatsu guys are listening to. Does anyone know who did that song?
Thanks, A. Reed

Needless to say, I love the movie! One of the best movies I actually bought! The one thing I want to know, is the scene where Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) is sitting in the archives room, waiting for his computer to translate the ancient text, he is listening to something that sounds techno. Does anybody know what that song is????? I want it! ICQ 35513241.

RAISES QUESTIONS

Blade is graphic, compelling, raises questions of trust in our governments of the world, and also does portray a fight between both forces of good V's evil. The sad part is more vidualantis will rise in arms to quest for peace though force of arms. Morality plays the part of ethics. Ethics plays the part of sanity. No one really can be sure of the outcome of these things. I believe...... At the end of our days lasting peace will not come from the death these people.

ABOUT WISTLER
Subject: Wistler's demise

From: Louis

The movie was great, as was the book. The one point I would like to
make in the following of the book is that Wistler didn't die by his own
hand. If you pay attention in the end of the book, it was Wistler who
was faced with Blade in Moscow.

FROST BETTER THAN BLADE
Subject:Commentary:
FROST IS TOO COOL TO GET BEAT BY SOME STIFF LIKE BLADE. I WANT A RE-MATCH!
Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2000
From: Her Majesty Elizabeth I

Frankly, I think that while the movie had a nice, urban, gothic, freaky-cool premise, the people who made it went about it all wrong. Blade, who has all the emotional depth of a black Arnold Swartzenegger, is the one who we as the viewers are expected to rally behind. We're supposed to be happy when Frost, the coolest guy there, dies. (err, bulls--t!). If they do make a sequel, they should bring Frost back from the dead a la the Vampire Lestat, so he can kick Blade's ass even though he should have done that in the first movie.

BTW, since you seem to have so many vampire lovers visiting this site, maybe some of them might be interested in this vampire story that I wrote. It's called "In Which a Deaf Man Heard and a Vampire Saw the Sun" and is at http://homepages.go.com/~hellpost/index.html . It doesn't have any Frost references, but there is the same sort of psychology going on here. Maybe you could include the link next to my commentary, that is, if you choose to list either.

July 30, 1999. Do you know where I can buy the sword off the movie Blade? If you do send me a E-mail to sreynolds3@hotmail.com.

ISN'T A CHRISTIAN BASED MOVIE INFO RESOURCE
June 30, 1999. This movie is loaded with profanity. This movie also contains nudity and extremely graphic violence. One scene depicts vampires dancing seductivly while blood sprays down on them via an overhead fire sprinkler system. No Christian should watch this movie it has no positive spiritual value. I especially warn parents do not let children see this movie. If this web site endorses this movie I cannot nor can you trust it as a Chistian based movie information resource.
My response: Given your definition of 'Christian' how do you justify the fact that you watched the film. You actually paid money to see it.  Words like 'paradoxical' and even 'hypocritical' come to my mind. Your religion seems to be morality (works) based, which is cool, but that is different from being Chirst centered. Morality does not equal Jesus. I am curious, what you do with all the extreme graphic violence (Judges 3:20-22 etc.), nudity (Jesus on cross), seductive dancing (Mat 14:6) and blood (Rev. 16:3) in the Bible?

DORFF DESERVES MORE CREDIT
June 4, 1999. Hey, Put more Steven Dorff (as Deacon Frost) He is fine and should’ve kicked Blade's butt,(and he's cuter too!) Misty and Sabrina p.s. Deacon Frost is better than Blade, he deserves more credit.

BEST VAMPIRE MOVIE EVER
May 24, 1999. I think the movie is the best Vampire movie I 've ever seen. After I rented the movie I bought it then I bought the book and I think that Wesley Snipes played his part well.

OUTDOES INTERVIEW

SAW IT 4 TIMES
March 14, 1999. I personally saw the movie 4 times, and found it to be a really good flic for shaking of classicism about Vampires. Being a good refresher, it gives the viewer another kind of possible fight for good, but through a killers eyes, which much kill to preserve his sanity and his humanity. In a way, he fights for his soul. And by the way, for those who think it is unrealistic to slay a vampire with a sword, it is because in Blade's world not all vampires can be killed alike, being from various sects which are represented by the marking they have on the neck. This i found out on the site for the movie, check it out !. Otherwise i found the movie entertaining, fast, furious and without a doubt a real joy ... and in comparison with many, he doesn't play around with his victims like in many other movies, making a lot more realistic.

WESLEY SNIPES BETTER THAN GOOD
March 4, 1999. My comments for the movie is this , the coolest music , very nice cast , story and Wesley was better than good . He was like the comic . Very bad and no mercy !!! –Kostis

SNIPES NOT "PLASTIC"
Feb 25 1999, Johanna: I have always been a fan of Wesley Snipes and this movie clinches it. He is so versatile and he masters Blade. I hope there will be another Blade and that we get to see Wesley Snipes as Blade again. Wesley Snipes is Blade. If he won't play Blade then don't make the movie. We got enough "Plastic Surgery" characters with Batman. –Johanna

MOVIE WAS MAD
Feb 8 1999, All I have to say is daaaaaaaang someone pick my jaw from the floor. Stephen is just delicious... coming from a vampire... I think the movie was mad... and once again that man is just drop dead gorgeous and the fangs and white face paint were just more of a turn on for me. --Telly

SWORD ISN'T A CROSS
Feb 2 1999, Only problem I have with your review is your statement about the sword and stake being like the cross. In the movie Blade states (before going into Pearl's club) that crosses don't work. I appreciate the attempts to tie in the movie w/ some spiritual areas but that was stretching it a bit. --David
My response:
Actually, it is Abraham Whistler who says crosses don't work. However, the stake and sword share the same function as the cross in Vampire tales and have long been considered types of the cross. Numbers 21:9 reads, "So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to the top of a pole (stake). Whenever those who were bitten looked at the bronze snake, they recovered!"

DENMARK, GO SEE IT
Jan 7, 1999. It´s the best vampire movie since, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. if any of you guys are in Denmark, then go in and see "nattens engel", it is almost as good as Blade... Michael

Jan 2 1999. This movie was very well done. The characters were portrayed very well. Snipes is perfect for the role, and Dorff, well, couldn't of been anymore of a immortal. ALL THE GREAT ELEMENTS

SWEET
Dec 27, 1998. I saw it in theaters and it was sweet. The bloody club was one of the scenes of the movie. And the Temple scene. Snipes was brilliant and the best for the character Blade. Stephen Dorff is a great villain and acted very well. I got Blade on DVD and saw it over 5 times. I cant wait till Blade 2. Its gonna be cool, and I hope its gonna be as cool as the first one. I think Blade is the one of the best movies ever made. But it is the best of the year. Maybe I'm gonna talk or write David Goyer, the writer and ask him if I can make a third one. -Andrew KillerHT@aol.com

WATCHED IT 3 TIMES
I really like the movie blade. Its my third time to watch it on the big screen. My favorite character there is Deacon Frost. I like his style man!!!

LACKED IMPACT
I thought it lacked in characterisation and some moments should have had more impact with more emotion showed. The opening and ending scenes are about the only I will remember.

STEPHAN DUFF CONVINCING
I really think it's a wonderfull movie, speacially the good acting from Stephen Dorff very convincing One of the best vampires i have ever seen, specially if you have read any of Anne Rice stories, her vampires are elegant, beatiful and have allure, Stephen Dorff fills the description perfectly. Wonderfull! email:

GREAT, BUY WHY NIGHTCLUB?

Here are my comments. Great movie, but has anyone ever thought about some of the jobs vampires get in this movie? I mean, if you're a vampire, why would you be serving drinks at a nightclub? -Kit.

REALLY GOOD
Here are my comments.I thought that Blade was really good. I think that Deacon Frost played my Stephen Dorff could have been better because I collect comic books and in Blade Deacon is supposed to be a doctor who turns Blade into a vampire. I think maybe they will come out with Blade 2 because Blade is now in Moscow.

GREAT VAMP FILM
Blade was incredible the casting was great Snipes had to be Blade and Dorff as Frost -my personal favorite character besides Blade himself- is positively menacing. The world of vampires exists in three colors red black and white. The vampires were in no way "old fashioned" they were slick and well organized and at the top of the corporate ladder. I am a lover of a good vamp movie and extremely picky about plot and this one has one. Along with enough action to keep your brain jarrin in your skull. -Andrew.

WASEEM KHAN FROM GLASGOW SCOTLAND: BRILLIANT FILM WENT TWICE TO WATCH IT ON THE FIRST DAY OF RELEASE LOVE IT GRITTY ACTION BLOOD EVERYTHING U CAN ASK FOR, NICE WEAPONS LOVE THE BEGINNING THE BLOOD BATH.
