BATTLEFIELD EARTH (2000)
Why are we becoming a culture of religious intolerance?
Why do we speak unkindly of those who do not believe as we do?

And why do we mask our spirituality from others?
This film by Scientologist founder L. Ron Hubbard
brings all these questions front and center.

So all the critics can sigh a note of relief because Battlefield Earth is "not about Scientology." And, John Travolta did not use the film as a platform to preach Scientology. Well, this is one critic who is disappointed.

1. It is about Scientology!

2. John Travolta and others connected to the film downplayed the Scientology connections. But why did they feel the need to do that? What's going on here?

3. I believe film should be a public forum. Scientologists should make films that express their ideas on the big screen. As all religions should. I believe movie houses should be open public forums.

4. Why is our culture so afraid of sharing its varied spiritual beliefs with each other? Why do we mask the obvious? Where is free speech and religious freedom? Where is artistic integrity?

5. It makes me nervous when film makers feel they can not honestly share their deepest convictions.

6. Why do many Christian critics blast film makers that do share honest convictions that are different from Christian beliefs.

7. Why were 'non-religious' critics so afraid of Scientology?

8. Why all the religious bashing? Where is kindness? Where is the free exchange of religious thought? Why do so many Christians tend to be the least tolerant?
Note: To see how intolerant my fellow Christians can be, read some of the comments in the CBS Jesus review. It makes me very sad.

9. In the midst of incredible interest in spirituality there is undo self censorship going on. It makes me real nervous. The issues of personal, spiritual and artistic integrity are at stake here.

10. May Hollywood Jesus be an example of how expressions of spiritual beliefs can be freely expressed and exchanged in an atmosphere of love, kindness and tolerance.

ENTERTAINING MOVIE

Hi. Whether or not this movie was about Scientology does not really matter to me. What surprises me is how many people thought it was a terrible show. This movie was good classic hard science fiction. My husband, our friends and I loved the fact that it had the old themes of the world needing saving and lots of fun gadgets along the way. Personally, I really enjoyed it. I guess that dissenting opinion is what I wanted to post.

NOT FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Hey David, I was reading your reviews of "dinosaur:", then I got to "battlefield earth" and read some of your gripes about "religious intolerance". Do you read your Bible? Are you saved? Don't you know that God Himself declares "beside me there is NO saviour"? Now if you are a Christian (meaning you follow Jesus of Nazareth and have become convinced that He is the promised messiah AND that He is GOD,and that His work of atonement on the cross and that work ONLY is what saves you), then there can be no room for "religious intolerance".

There is God's truth, and the lies of the enemy. That's it. Scientology is false doctrine intended by satan to deceive and we cannot compromise on our beliefs simply to make a group of "religious" people feel good. We are not called to be man-pleasers, and if you cannot stand for truth and tell folks exactly what God's word says about their misguided attempts at redemption or spiritual healing, then why say you are a Christian? Just tell it like it is, don't get hung up with political correctness. God says homosexuality is a sin, should we be accepting with open arms the multitude of openly gay "pastors" and "ministers" that seems to be rising up lately? Of course not! We should have arms open in love to them, but we MUST also be clear that we do not accept their lifestyle and make emphatically clear that they must turn from this abominable lifestyle.

And if you or anyone else wants to say that I or my brethren who agree with this are practicing "religious intolerance", I leave you with these words FROM THE BIBLE: But Peter and John answered and said unto them," Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." Acts 4:19,20 Your brother in His service, Billie Q.

My response: I think you mean "there is no room for religious tolerance." One of the guarantees of the (USA) Bill of Rights is freedom of religion. Hitler was not tolerant of the Jewish faith. Millions died. I enjoy a free America. If being a Christian means I can not be tolerate and respectful of people of other faiths (or sexual preferences), then by your definition I am not a Christian. I guess what I would say to you is: I am a follower of Jesus and a lover of all people. Your words make me feel sorrow for you. I am for the free expression of faith by all people, and I would die on that hill. "For God so loved all the world that..."

BATTLEFIELD AND DINOSAUR

"BATTLEFIELD EARTH" Don't see this movie. Okay? Seriously, there's no rational human explanation for this film's existence other than it's some kind of secret Scientological evangelistic effort devised by the supposedly dead (but who somehow still cranks out books) L. Ron Hubbard -- the sci-fi hack founder of his own religion. Perhaps L. Ron's followers see this flick as some kind of GREAT TRUTH from the pen of their leader, but to the uninitiated, or "cleared", it's an incomprehensible mind-numbing (and deafening) experience. Someone should rub John Travolta's nose in this steaming pile of cinematic excrement. And it cost 70 million buckaroos. A real obscenity. I've seen more artistic and interesting road kill.
