| "A psychological horror story about a woman whose marriage to an astronaut mysteriously disintegrates after a freak accident in space." |
Plot summary:
In the film, a space mission goes terribly awry and astronaut Spencer Armacost (Depp) is rushed back to Earth and revived. Honored as an American hero, he quits his job to start a family with his wife Jillian (Theron) in New York. When they discover she is pregnant, the couple tries to put the tragedy in space behind them. After several puzzling events, Jillian begins to have doubts about her husband, suspecting he's not the same man she married. Concerns about her unborn twins arise.
ABOUT BEING PREGNANT
WITH THE ANTICHRIST TWINS
IN NEW YORK!
COMMENTS FROM DAVID BRUCE:

I really wanted this film to work. It doesn't.
The first half went well.
But, the second half dragged.
However, on the plus side,
it reminded me of Rosemary's Baby.
In fact the story is about the same:
Wife becomes pregnant.
Husband is really demonic, otherworldly.
The offspring are destined to become world dominators (Antichrist).
Wife learns horrible truth about her pregnancy.
She chooses to give birth to "her" baby (ies)..
She raises the demonic (alien) child (ren).
It also reminded me of Theron's role in The Devil's Advocate:
Husband has a job change. Moves to New York
(this is the new Babylon of Revelation in Pop Culture).
She moves to New York with him, of course.
We learn that the husband is the son of Satan (other worldly).
And Satan wants a child! The Antichrist.
The film demonstrates the close parallel, in the mind of our popular culture, between hostile outer space aliens and spiritual demonic forces. The film plays on our fears of being overcome by forces greater than ourselves. It reminds us that we cannot entirely chart our own course. Chaos happens. Evil happens. Things are not always what they seem. Friends turn on us for little reason. Marriages fall apart. The Mack truck hits. The enemy comes in like a flood. These realities remind us of our need for some thing, or rather Some One, greater than ourselves to help us through.
Jillian, the pregnant wife, although brilliant, has no greater resource than herself. She ultimately cannot overcome the evil and is possessed by it.
"The thief comes to rob, kill, and destroy. But, I have come to give you life that is abundant." -Jesus (John 10:10)

|
| RELATIONSHIPS CHANGE: "The film is really about a womans love for her husband and the frightening decay of their relationship," explains producer Andrew Lazar. |
|
THE EYE GATE: Something happened in space (inner self) that caused husband and astronaut Spencer to change. He is possessed by something demonic that enters him through the eye. The eye was important in Blade Runner as well. The wife Jillian suffers the same fate at the end. |
|
CHILDREN OF DESTINY
In this film the Antichrist comes as a set of twins from outer space born through a human mother.

CONNECTION TO REVELATION
Subject: two witnesses?
Date: 28 Mar 00
From: gavin
Could it be possible that this movie is Demonizing the "two witnesses" in Revelation? These are the two that prophesy prior to the return of Jesus Christ (the real one). This movie portraying them as originating from an evil alien source? These two witnesses are given power to destroy anyone who attacks them, and the Bible says very cleary that worldly people will despise their service on Earth.... as the "fire" from their mouths cause chaos... hmmmm... those invisible beams? Just a thought.... actually the first one that came to my mind when I was this movie.
Response: Interesting thought. But, I doubt it.

hi my name is Kendall and a I thought the movie THE ASTRONAUT¹S WIFE was really quite good. I thought it was a little confusing and I can understand why people think it sucks, but I personally love it and I want to buy it.
HORRIBLE
Aug 29, 1999. This movie was horrible. I give it a generous 1 out of 10 stars. The ending was pointless.
