Armageddon in prophesy.
A Hollywood Jesus Bible Insight. |
|
Armageddon represents the location of the final cosmic battle of the forces of good and evil.
ARMAGEDDON means the "Hill or Mountain of Meguro." It is the valley between Mount Carmel and the city of Jezreel. This valley (known as the Valley of Jezreel and sometimes referred to as the Plain of Esdraelon) was the crossroads of two important ancient trade routes. One linking Egypt with the Fertile Crescent and the other connecting Palestine with the Phoenician coast. Hence, it was a strategic military site and the scene of many ancient battles from the early Bronze Age to Allenbys victory in World War I. It is site of the final battle of this age in which God intervenes to destroy the armies of Satan and to cast Satan into the bottomless pit.
HISTORIC BATTLES OF ARMAGEDDON.
Ancient biblical accounts tell of the conquest of the Promised Land and how Deborah and Barak, with the stars fighting on their side, defeated Sisera and the Canaanite kings at Taanach and Megiddo. This connection between the stars and Armageddon is very much like the film Armageddon!
Judges 5:19-20
"The kings of Canaan fought at Taanach near Megiddo's springs, but they carried off no treasures of battle.
The stars fought from heaven. The stars in their orbits fought against Sisera.
-New Living Translation
Josiah, the great Hebrew reformer and king who did "what was right in the sight of the Lord" died at Megiddo at the hand of Pharaoh Neco (2 Kings 23:29) which led to the final downfall and deportation of the nation of Judah. This was remembered by the Jewish people as highly significant.
There are many other Biblical references including the messianic prophecies found in Zech. 914 which tell of an apocalyptic purging of Jerusalem in the valley of Megiddon (12:11).
THE COSMIC BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON. The book of Revelation tells of an end-of-time battle with "the kings of the east" (16:12). The context suggests not a physical battle but a spiritual battle in which the Word of God confronts its demonic antithesis. Armageddon is the final cosmic battle of this age in which God intervenes to destroy the armies of Satan and to cast Satan into the bottomless pit.
Revelation 16:16-21 "And they gathered all the rulers and their armies to a place called Armageddon in Hebrew. Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. And a mighty shout came from the throne of the Temple in heaven, saying, "It is finished!" Then the thunder crashed and rolled, and lightning flashed. And there was an earthquake greater than ever before in human history. The great city of Babylon split into three pieces, and cities around the world fell into heaps of rubble. And so God remembered all of Babylon's sins, and he made her drink the cup that was filled with the wine of his fierce wrath. And every island disappeared, and all the mountains were leveled. There was a terrible hailstorm, and hailstones weighing seventy-five pounds fell from the sky onto the people below. They cursed God because of the hailstorm, which was a very terrible plague." -New Living Translation
