THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE
Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001
I found that this movie was very educational and interesting. It is true in many ways. I was wondering if "Hate is baggage, Life's to short to be pissed off all the time" is a quote from the end of the movie. I watched it 3 times and that's what I thought I heard him say, but when I look it up on the internet I find nothing about him saying that. If anybody knows please e-mail me at email@example.com. Thanks. This is the best movie.
AMERICA FOR THE AMERICANS!

One of the most interesting movies I have seen lately (to have stayed until 3:00am watching it)! Actually watching this film has made me start a conflict of thoughts of my own in my head as of late. Although I have been a personal admirer of Nazis (you can't blame them of trying to conquest the world, just like Napolean or Alexander the Great did!) & not skinheads since I was a little boy, I just don't understand the point of the movie. I know the philosophy of the nazi's was basically Germany for the germans, & in this movie in some segments it suggests American for the americans, but I ask myself, can anybody really define who an american really is??? As a proud latin american I have always had to put up with this shit all my life. Just because my skin color is brown, I'm in a way looked down by white folks who think I might steal something from a store, or they think I'm an illegal alien(from planet mars or something) who should be reported to the police, or should I say the MIB!! I come from a heritage of people who have lived here far before any "white" immigrants got his greedy little hands on any of my ancester's land. But all of a sudden a white immigrant comes along, & stop & behold his an immediate typical "american" just because of his skin color. What if his skin color was brown & he would immigrate from latin america to the US??? He would probably be considered an alien or a "border hopper" just like it is expressed in your movie. If your a person that has never studied pre-colonial history, or just has a short memory & only cares about events of the past century, I think we "spics" should be considered the only "real" americans since we have heritage of both worlds & were not just some slave descendents who were kidnapped & brought here against their will or white immigrants who escaped political or religious repression, or justice during colonial times who just shouldn't be here in the first place. Bottom line I think america is a ticking time bomb & it will be very hard for all of the races to get along!
ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING MOVIE

This is an absolutely outstanding movie. Never have I seen such an intense movie. It really makes you think about your own life. It is so realistic and believable that you almost feel like you are there. The fact is, is that race is a part of our every day lives and people are so blinded by it that we are all falling apart and don't even know it. I think that anyone could learn a very valuable lesson by watching this movie. This movie shows what racism can do to a family and the community around you. Racism is hatred and hatred is ignorance and I think this movie does a great job at showing that and the effects of it. I'm taking an English Comp. class right now and one of our assignments is to write a review over a film, book, article...etc. I chose this movie because it's outstanding and by far the most realistic movie I've seen in a long time.
I WAS WORRIED
Subject: American History X comments
Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001
When I first heard about this movie I was worried. My primary concern was that the underlying message of love and tolerance would be lost on some of the audience.
I was concerned that some extremist racist groups would see this film as a form of justification or potential propaganda forum.
Often films that deal with this sort of subject matter seem to become twisted in people's eyes as was evidenced by the rise in awareness of Anti-Asian gangs in my country after the Australian movie Romper Stomper became popular.
The film crew on American History X have done a brilliant job with the story and also the visual symbolism (for instance the Black and White nature of the flashbacks reflecting Derek's racial view of the world).
The raw and brutal nature of this film was amazing and I found it to be a perfect piece that aimed to persuade viewers but not in a preaching manner as many other films do.
Unfortunately, reading some of the other comments here and through discussions with other people I have realised that, despite the valiant attempts of the cast and crew, my primary concern for this film was justified.

RACISM = WRONG
Date: Sat, 09 Jun 2001
I'm not a skinhead,i'm white,a christian and was brought up in a white prodominant area. That's my background, here are my views. This film is amazing, it opens peoples eyes and minds. The way it was filmed is very artistic, and the message is very important-racism is a way of expressing anger, a way of passing on blame. basically it's saying racism is bad. I have certain theories that r counted as extreme, but i've got a question to ask-how many black people have been convicted of race hate crimes against whites in the UK? hardly ne, yet it goes on.if you are white and u do nething to a black person, u r going to be convicted for a racist crime, this is also a form of racism, and it has to be looked into.
GOOD PLOT, BUT BAD PACKAGE
Date: Wed, 30 May 2001
From: "Trevor Johnson"
The movie had an overall good plot. But there is a difference in depicting violence to bring to the surface the moral implications of violence and in just depicting violence for the sheer entertainment value of violence. This movie could have implied much of the violence and got across the intended point without dwelling upon it and relishing it. It is a good thing to depict in movies the power of a changed life - but we must be careful. If one gives one's testimony in church, we may say that we once were sinners but now we are saved - but we do not want to describe the sins in which we indulged to the point of enticing others into these sins or glorifying them.
Response: American History X does not relish in violence. And thankfully it did not use your standards of a "testimony in church" as a grid in making this very important film. I am curious what do you do with the graphic violence descriptions in the Bible. They outdo anything in American History X. Churches are all to often unrealistically moralistic while the Bible and American History X are realistically moral. -David

MORE THAN RACISM
Subject: About more than Racism
Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000
American History X is a powerful movie that many need to see but many won't. While there are certainly the overt overtones of Racism explored in the movie I think it is about much more than that. The relationships between the two brothers in this film and their willingness to virtually stop loving each other is a wonderful example of how hatred destroys. Hatred not only destroys those attached by physical blood but it can destroy those attached in spiritual ways.
This film is wonderfully directed and acted. While many would discourage children from watching I believe that if done in the right way, with parental assistance the film can be a valuable educational tool to show our children how hate does destroy. Jesus came to save all, red, yellow, black white, rich, poor, thin, heavy, you get the point. He also called us to love others as he has loved us. We are in fact to be a evidence to others of that love. While we certainly have to sometimes suffer the natural consequences of our sin, just as Edward Norton does in this film, it is also refreshing to know that Christ forgives fully. Just as hate can be contagious, as depicted in the film, so can love. May we as a community of Christians never forget that, but better yet may we never stop showing others the love of Christ. Even those we don't understand. On a scale of 1 - 10, 8

All you stupid Nazi's need to look into what you are all about. I used to be a member of one of the biggest white power gangs in southern California, until one day I realized that you can only let them feed you so much propaganda crap before you have to stop and say what am I really here for. There is no answer you are just there for the ride, almost to be a part of a revolution( which is a pointless one at that). But those of you that actually by into that crap because of your ignorance and fear, that's right FEAR, of the unusual and unknown will die still fighting for a revolution that died out long before most of you were born. Do any of you actually believe that you will change the world in anyway, because if you do maybe there was a little bit to much inbreeding in your family. I agree that immigration is bad but if you think that you can solve problems by beating the crap out of people or other immature crap that a 14 would do then you are mistaken. If you want to fight against immigration then you have to be on the side that wants to stop it the most and that would be the governments side. Oh and by the way what Nazi idea are you fighting for? Oh yeah let's listen to Hitler who wants to create a pure Arian race you know blonde hair blue eyed Protestants, especially since Hitler had brown hair brown eyes and came from a Jewish lineage. If you don't believe in Hitler then how can you call yourself a Nazi. Don't get me wrong I am glad that you all can believe in something, but couldn't you believe in something a bit more productive, and I am not talking about just Nazi's I am talking about any organized hate gangs out there what ever ethnic background you may come from. As far as the movie goes I think that it is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time, because it does not try to sugar coat anything. It is a in depth portrayal of the hate that consumes my generation, and I think that a lot of you racist people out there can learn a lot from this movie. Anyway I am done talking if anybody wants to discuss this subject in further detail then feel free to write me. As far a death threats go please do not send them to me because you are offended by my opinion because if you really get that mad then you are obviously going into a defensive mode, and that means that I struck some truth with these statements and you just can't handle facing yourself and questioning what you believe in, instead you have to question what I believe in.

some of you people are complete morons. the scene where he babbles off about all the problems with immigrants isn't supposed to make you stop and think. it's not supposed to convince you of that crap, it's supposed to illustrate how hate has eaten this guy from inside out and filled his head with nonsense targeted at anyone who isn't white. my goodness half of you miss the whole point of the speech. and complaining that the movie depicts blacks as the victims and "where are the movies about racism against whites" is just absurd. it's not about blacks being better than whites or vice versa, the point is that hate becomes a domino affect, whether it involves blacks OR whites. Besides, it's ridiculous to even attempt to compare the white situation with what blacks have had to go through almost since whites got here. I mean I'm white and I'll say that. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that blacks suffer far more oppression than whites in this country. if you want to understand the movie, don't focus on individual lines or speeches, look at the big picture. read between the lines.........

Film is also of a very polemical character.I read all messages about it, and...a lot of opinions of many colours. So here is my message. As i say film is very polemical in it is posted a "problem" of racism in America (in common this problem is the same in Russia,Germany, with a little defferences) First of all i want to ask,why do you say that racism a problem? -It's not a problem it's just a reflection of society, on all that surrounds it (for example B&W problem). Yes, every nation can be divided on bad and good people. So it's also a problem. Yes, as i say film is great but...it doesn't give a real resolvation of a situation.I never shall belive that of 100 skinheads will want to become an equall with black ppl. And the situation is exactly the same in black society. "Eye for an eye, teeth for a teeth"-so we live, and shall live for the end of our days. So all who will read this message must be first of all ppl, and don't say to me that sometimes you dont want to kill someone (independent of skin colour). Society with equall ppl have no chanses to live it's like a Morrs "Utopia". At last i want to say i agree with Skinhead ppl, cause if government don't want to resolve a problem's which rises with increasing amount of Black ppl (who mostly by the way live on money of White ppl who works for 'em and pay to government). So rezolve first Black problem and Skin "problem" will disappear.
P.S If have opinions all of you send it to me we will talk my e-mail:email@example.com
Response: Solving the so-called "black problem" will not solve the "skin" problem. There are more whites on welfare than blacks. Love is the only solution and love comes from God. All people are created in the image of God and need to treated accordingly.

SKIN HEAD ATHEIST NOT RACIST
Subject: The focal point.
Date: Thu, 18 May 2000
First of all i have to say some things about myself: I live in italy, i am an atheist, i am politically on the right side and i've been a SkinHeads leader some years ago. As someone yet write down here, not all skinheads are neonazists. I am not, nor i have ever been, a racist. About that matter i had more than once arguments with my skinheads friends. But in my opinion, nor nazism nor racism are the focusing points of this movie. They shall be expressions, but surely not the definitive cause of hate.
I don't believe in any god nor religion, and don't believe that human beings are good or evil in themselves. Each of us choose to express love or hate, respect or disrespect, towards others and first of all toward ourselves. What that movie very well focuses is that everyone has his own reason to feel sorrow, frustration, delusion. Everyone feel at times being undeserving mistreated by society, law, life itslef. And it's a brief step to drive those sensations into hate. And when we start to hate, we do need a target to aim on. Little changes if we choose a black guy, a jew or the unknown man walking down the street. Theories like Nazism give a structured way to express that hatred. They offer an illusory sense of glory and the feel to be involved in a "mission". But at least the whole Nazi parafernalia is nothing but a alibi.
Human beings had been capable to express this hatred under every kind of flag. Christian religion, believing or not, is based upon love. And human beings had been capable to express hatred, to torture and kill also under Christian Cross. The focal point is the hate root inside ourselves. A hatred that grows on sorrow. Believing in god or not, each of us have a hard work to do: Knowing ourselves. Accepting ourselves. Going through the need to hate and learn to live with our sorrow without an enemy to hate and aim. Don't let political explanations blindfold you... the Evil isn't in a shaved head nor in a nazi flag... as it's not in a red flag, in the colour fo a skin or in apolitical faith. The Evil is inside ourselves. And there we can know it, accept it and go through it. Or cease to it, dress it and build a monument of blood. Our's blood, other's blood. Skorpio

FEEL THE MOVIE -EVERYONE BLEEDS
July 30, 1999. American History X left me speechless for quite some time, but it also kept me restless. I believe there is no one message that can be picked out from the movie as there are no two people who think alike. The movie does not try to feed us a "right answer" which is a fresh and mature dealing with such an issue such as racism. During the watching of the film I found myself Identifying with both sides, I wanted to see Derek get punished but I also sensed that he is not the only one guilty in the situation, also the film does'nt look for the guilty. This is not about which kind of 'skinhead' you are, this is about what kind of a human being you are. I also believe this movie should be learned and disscussed in every school in America and in the world. The letter R rating this movie has failed to make the difference between Education and Entertainment - the violence in this movie is not bad influence on children, it is a necesssary tool to show that every one bleeds. I hope everyone doesn't sleep well after watching this movie. I hope everyone who whatches the movie can also feel it. i hope one day hate will be a word in the dictionary. I hope. -Rafi
AFFECTED STUDENTS IN UNEXPECTED WAYS
July 9, 1999. I am a college English teacher and I have just shown this movie to three of my classes in one day. This makes the 6th time I have seen this movie in a matter of weeks, three times within one day. When I first saw the film, I was so disturbed that I could not sleep for several hours. The movie has haunted me all summer and I really showed it to my classes because I "needed" to talk about this film . . . I have a strong component in my composition course that deals with matters of race, hoping to raising the awareness in my primarily white students (I am also white). I showed this movie at the end of several weeks of dealing with essays and documentary films about race, racial stereotypes (the film is called "Ethnic Notions"), and so I felt I'd given the students a pretty good context in which to view the movie. But I was unprepared for the response of all three classes. Many of the students wept openly and after each screening, the students did not want to leave. They were so powerfully affected by the film, and most expressed that it was a film that "everyone should HAVE to see." I am still getting phone calls and e_mails from students thanking me for showing them this incredible, powerful film. Many students expressed a profound spiritual response to the film. One student said he was going to the video store to purchase the film and make everyone he knows watch it. This ALL exceeded my expectations, even my hopes, when I planned to show the film, but most of all, it has deepened my own appreciation of the film and my commitment to its message.Peggy
WHAT'S SO WRONG WITH NAZISM?
July 3, 1999. I LOVED THE MOVIE. WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH WHITE PEOPLE BEING PROUD OF THEMSELVES THE WOMEN SAID IT MADE HER SICK WHEN THE SKINHEAD TOLD THE BLACK CRIP GANGSTER TO PUT HIS MOUTH ON THE CURB. WHY WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IF THE AFRICAN POSTED WITH THE GUN WOULD HAVE KILLED THE MAN WHO ONLY WANTED TO RECLAIM HIS RIGHT TO BE WHITE AND PROUD. WHATS SO WRONG WITH NAZIISM? I KNOW MILLIONS OF JEWS WERE KILLED. BUT, AMERICANS KILLED MILLIONS OF INDIANS AND WE DONT CONSIDER THE AMERICAN FLAG AN EVIL TABOO WHY IS THERE A DOUBLE STANDARD? -ARYAN
My response. You answered your own question! What is wrong with the Nazi slaughter of Jews is the same thing that is wrong with the historic killing of Indians. All murder is wrong. All ethnic hate is wrong. Americans stopped the killing of Indians on their own because they felt it was wrong, but it took WW2 to stop the Nazis from killing 6 million Jews, and 5 million others: Catholics, Christians, the mentally ill, homosexuals, political dissenters and so on. There is a difference. Love is the key to peace between humans and God is Love! Do you believe this?.
SKINHEAD GIRL RESPONDS
July 2, 1999. I am a 18 year old Traditional Skinhead (not racist) girl. This movie should of explained the different types of skinheads, Nazi, Sharp, Traditional. This movie gives us skins a bad name and makes people believe all skins are pro racism.
June 10, 1999. I watched this movie with no idea as to the content. Upon realizing the subject was "skinheads" I almost turned it off... I considered this movie a wake-up call to all. We are ALL different. It is scarey to imagine just where the next line in the sand will be drawn. In this movie it was skin color; tomorrow it could be ANYTHING. Hair color? Sounds a bit dramatic but true nonetheless. The image and thought of someone murdering another human being or being raped in prison is actually a common thing in today's movies but, I was not prepared for the impact that this movie had on me. These things have not been a part of my life but I felt like I was right there. Too real... "Alice"
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATIONIS A PROBLEM
June 1, 1999. I saw the film, and, live in Los Angeles, and have never seen a white skin head gang. And,yes, illegal immigration is real problem, see more, look up aztlan. www.americanpatrol.com
April 19, 1999 Fantastic, thought provoking and disturbing movie. It intimidated me and helped me to realise that it is the mindset of these racists which is unfathomable to me and hopefully many of us. This enhances the movie's power. I was wondering if anyone could supply me with the final quote that is used in the last scene of the movie. If you can, please send to firstname.lastname@example.org. If not, any ideas where to look?
WATCH IT WITH AN OPEN HEART AND MIND
April 06, 1999. I know some people objected to this movie and some cheered it on for it's subject of Nazi Skinheads and racism, but look past that. The film has a point to it, if you don't open your eyes and your mind, you'll end up throwing your life away. If some, so called "Nazi" idiot cheered on, he's not getting the point. It's about un-learning what you supposedly know. I myself love punk rock and the whole punk subculture. "true" skinheads are not racist, there are also black, Asian, Hispanic, and various other races of skins. The racists took to the whole skinhead "look" so their image could be tough. there are also SHARP skins (Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice). They and traditional skins are pretty much "crucified" if you will, by society's blame on them for hate. They did not start it, they oppose it. the film is great. I suggest you see it with an open heart and mind. For those who disliked the ending (watch the film, you'll see it.) It clearly states the whole subject of the film, through different eyes.
TEACHES A LOT.
Jan 15, 1999. I have seen this movie, and it is very powering! I loved it! It also really teaches you a lot about, well, . . . everything. E-mail: NEANER66@YAHOO.COM
SENSELESS VIOLENCE KNOWS NO COLOR.
I just saw American History X tonight and visited your site subsequently to see what you had thought of it. I'm interested to see that one of your Web site's visitors, at first, critiqued the film as anti-hate. Then, at the end, he comes out to say that it wasn't the film's intent. It was just interpreted incorrectly by a group of skinheads who watched the movie with him. Well, I think the point of the movie was to say that racism, sadly, is likely to exist forever. Also, the film shows that senseless violence knows no color lines. Those who have seen it will know what I mean, for explaining it here would spoil the ending of the film. Personally, I was shaken up by this film. To say I liked it would not be correct - it is an excellent and well-made film, but I "liked" this movie as much as I "liked" "Saving Private Ryan," another great film. I think "American History X" takes a hard look at racism that, while being ideological, ultimately admits that a perfect world is next to impossible...we all just have to make the right choices and hope that the problems don't come to us.
WHITES ARE VICTIMS TOO.
I abhore the skinhead movement and don't espouse any hatred towards people of another race. Having said that though, aren't people a little suspicious that "racism" portrayed in the movies is always about white racism. There are many attacks of non-white people on white people. Why don't these get covered? Why is there no denouncing of this. Why do we not get a movie from this? Is it OK for blacks to kill whites, for example? I am tired of this one-way bias and this sick, violent, lude film is just another example of this. Christians, beware this trash. I agree with the person who writes below that a skinhead attack is as likely as a lottery win. The rate is so low, its rediculous. I also noticed that you post some news articles about racist attacks. In the future, will you also be good enough to include racist attacks against whites, if you want to be fair about covering the sin of racial hatred.

VIOLENT ACTS BY SKINHEADS?
The possibility of an American being the victim of a violent act by skinheads is roughly same as winning lottery.
SKINHEADS IN THE THEATER CHEEred
From Private: I saw the film American History X this evening, and while I agree it is an important film, I cannot support it as an anti-hate movie. I had the "pleasure" of sharing the theatre with a group of ten or so "skinheads." When they entered, I groaned to my husband, "great, now we get to hear them boo and hiss through this whole thing." However, what occurred was quite the opposite. Rather, these hate-filled young people took great delight in every racist piece of dialogue. They cheered when the skinheads won the basketball game. They took sick and noisy delight in the viciously brutal murder of the black man against the pavement. In fact, this form of murder must be standard in the skinhead community, because these kids began "yeah"-ing immediately after Derek said "put your teeth on the pavement." It made me sick to my stomach.
If a movie can bring such pleasure to individuals that hate others so vehemently, how can it be anti-hate? These kids didn't leave the theatre provoked to change. It left them saying "see what he got for leaving the movement? Now he's hated by both blacks and whites." Not exactly a message that will inspire these children to change. Perhaps if I had not been privy to the skinhead reaction to this film, I would feel differently, but nonetheless, I feel American History X glorifies the skinhead movement. I am sure that is not what the filmmakers intended but it was at least the case with the group in my theater. It makes me deeply saddened and scared for the future victims of these skinheads. I will pray for both the victims and the perpetrators, and that this cancer of racism will be cured.
A "10" MOVIE WITH POWER OF UPPERCUT
This movie has the power of an uppercut, the force of a documentary and the violence of rhetoric militantism. You come out of the theater groggy and knocked down. Not only does this movie raise very controversial issues, while trying to deal with the concept of hate, it especially makes you think. A great exercise of style enhanced by a terrific cinematography. As a French citizen, I truly hope it's gonna be released there too. I give it a 10.
