REVIEW BY DAVID BRUCE

This is an ad for Touched!"I don't think there's ever been more of it at any one time - certainly not enjoying the kind of success our shows on CBS are. Clearly, America is sending Hollywood a message that there's a craving for entertainment that deals with religion and values."
-Leslie Moonves,
President of the CBS Entertainment.

Click picture to go to CBSPrime time spirituality has become popular, thanks to the success of "Touched by an Angel." The drama about a pair of angels who intervene in the lives of humans to lead them to the truth that God loves them has become a powerful antidote to brainless sitcom comedies. "Touched by an Angel" became the second most-watched show on television after "ER."

In fact, the success of "Touched by an Angel" is nothing short of miraculous. It is the first overtly religious drama to crack Nielsen's Top 10 during its 46 year history!

It didn't start out that way. The only things about the show that resemble the first script are its stars: Della Reese, Roma Downey, and Michael Pollard. The original premise was about an angel watching over children whose "destinies" were in danger. The angel (Roma Downey) was a deceased human, returning to earth as an angel of mercy. She had to fight the authoritative head angel (Della Reese) and they both despised the angel of death (Michael Pollard). All this combative angel play took place under the watchful eye of a God who manipulated people like an arbitrary, adversarial CEO of a company.

A kinder, gentler "Angel" show was transformed out of that hodgepodge in the hands of producer, Martha Williamson. Williamson was asked to look at the pilot show as part of her job at CBS. She rejected the script completely and even ended up leaving CBS in disappointment over not getting the show she wanted to work on: "Under One Roof" with James Earl Jones. But the "Angel" script kept filtering through her mind. She finally made it a matter of prayer and asked friends to pray with her. They all concluded that this was a script she was to be involved with. Now, she had the dubious task of interviewing for the job, along with other candidates, for the show she had only been handed a few weeks previous.

During the interview process, Williamson, was as honest as she could be, even though she didn't think that the assorted presidents and vice presidents of CBS really understood her pitch. Here is a quote, as direct as she remembers it that fateful day in 1994:

"I believe that people who would want to watch a show about angels wanted their angels to reflect a God who knew what He was doing. God can't make mistakes or change His mind. An angel show isn't exactly my dream series, but if I was going to do it, I would put my heart into it. That means writing only what I can stand behind. And this is it: Angels are messengers of God, not ends in themselves. Angels can't be fairies flapping their wings and granting wishes. God had to be Someone to reckon with. At the end of each episode, the angels wouldn't win. God would. And we would, too, because people of faith are tired of being depicted on television as stereotypes, mass murderers, abusive parents, and fanatics. A show that takes spirituality seriously will attract an intelligent, rational audience of people for whom faith has a place in their lives.

"We have to ask the hard questions every week. "If God is good, then why did my baby die? Why did my marriage end? Where was God when I needed Him? We had to meet head-on the inevitable criticism that faith is a cop-out to avoid dealing with reality, that belief in God is the opiate of the masses. Instead, faith is the most powerful weapon we have. If audiences could turn off the television at night feeling inspired and empowered, they'd come back next week, and they'd bring more with them."

There was silence after her pitch and then the questions came: Could she reshoot the pilot and make it work? "No." Wings? "No." Can angels be human? "No." Could we meet God? "No." Did she want to keep Della and Roma? "Yes!" Williamson believed that the incandescent beauty of Irish actress Roma Downey and her genuiness was a great plus to counter the strong presence and authority of Della Reese. Willamson was a hit with CBS brass and offered the job on the spot. "Touched by an Angel" was off to a prayerful and very hopeful start. The rest is history.

1998 spiritual spin-offs like "Promised Land" have followed the success of "Touched by an Angel." "Promised Land," stars Gerald McRaney as a downsized worker who becomes an earthly angel. Another spin-off has been "Early Edition" with Kyle Chandler as a former stockbroker devoting his life to helping others. When it first came out, "Early Edition" was the highest rated new drama of the season. In addition, Dan Akroyd, from "Saturday Night Live" fame is playing an Episcopalian priest on "Soul Man." You know times have changed when one of the 'Blues Brothers' ends up as a minister!

Despite reports that ABC's canceled "Soul Man" was likely to move to UPN, those plans have been scrapped. Star Dan Aykroyd has decided not to do the series. UPN supposedly ordered 44 episodes of the series, but the parties involved couldn't come to terms on a price.

"Seventh Heaven" is about a minister and his family that portray very realistic situations that any clergy would face in contemporary culture. However, when Hollywood got too realistic with an hour long catholic drama, "Nothing Sacred," it didn't work. Kevin Anderson starred as a Roman Catholic priest who wrestles with profound issues of faith as he questions the existence of God, the nature of his sexuality and the meaning of life. The priest and other Catholics portrayed on the show grapple with real life issues with integrity and honesty never before seen on television or elsewhere. It was a little too honest for some Catholic hierarchy who fought against the show. Despite critical acclaim by some that it was "the best series on television," its detractors were strong enough to have the show canceled. The fact that it was made at all, however, points to a new direction in thinking about spiritual issues by Hollywood producers.

After years in which most religious leaders accused television producers of belittling religious topics, the trend seems to be toward less ridicule and more respect for clergy, people of faith and religious subjects.

"It seems clear that the pendulum effect is going on here," said Henry Herx, director of the Bishop's Office for film and Broadcasting, which reviews programs and movies for Catholic News Service. "The swing is to deal responsibly with religion. That has been notably absent in recent years."

In giving some history, Herx, comments that "when television emerged as an entertainment giant, religion and clergy became the frequent butt of jokes on such shows as "Saturday Night Live," where Father Guido Sarducci and the Church Lady became cultural icons.

There were rabbis on "Picket Fences," and ministers on "Little House on the Prairie." Sally Field was a levitating nun and "MASH" had a funny chaplain, but there have been few solid dramatic clergy roles, beyond "The Thorn Birds" miniseries.

"After World War II, the old conventions of Hollywood changed," Herx said. "Society changed. Hollywood changed."

And both seem to be changing again. The graying of America is one of several reasons for the turnaround, according to Ted Baehr, president of the Christian Film and Television Commission in Los Angeles. The commission is a Protestant lobby and Christian advocacy group for studios and producers in California.

"Even Madonna says that TV isn't fit for her child," Baehr said.

He also believes that there is a genuine spiritual renewal under way in the country. The result is more - and better - religious programming.

He also believes that there is a genuine spiritual renewal under way in the country. The result is more - and better - religious programming.

There is also more "God" talk on other series. NBC's "Homicide" had its Jesuit-educated character, Frank Pembleton, wondering "why God allows the kind of evil" that he witnessed all the time in his job. In "Homicide," Pembleton's struggle to believe in God is central to the character, according to executive producer Tom Fontana, and will play a large role in this year's major story line about his comeback after a stroke.

Why all the God talk now?

"The subject of religious beliefs and individual values has relevance in different ways at different times," says Kathy Quattrone, head of programming at PBS,. "I think currently it's both a personal question many people are seeking to explore and also, clearly, a very public debate as evidenced by the election and many of the issues left as we begin another four years. A lot of the time, television reflects what's going on in the country. America went through a cynical time in the 1980s, and now I think we're back to caring more about each other. One message of these shows is, "help thy neighbor."

NBC did research on the subject of religion and the American culture in response to a lot of queries about why network television seemed to be avoiding religion. NBC Entertainment president, Warren Littlefield said, "We have spent a lot of time...trying to be in touch with the audience out there. Our research showed us that religion is something that across America viewers seem to be seeking out more strongly than ever before. And we very much have felt that sensibility."

Responding to those findings, NBC went into production on "Amazing Grace" with Patty Duke as a minister. But the road to successful religious prime-time drama is a largely uncharted one, and the series was canceled after only a handful of episodes aired last year. However, Duke's show seemed to pave the way for presenting ministers and their families with honesty and integrity. Duke played a minister who was a sensitive and caring minister with the same hopes and foibles most people have. She was responsible in taking care of her flock and her family. She was always trying to push people to get beyond their discriminations and prejudices. But the ultimate prejudice that Duke couldn't do anything about involved her gender. In the religions community, unfortunately, they leave their strongest prejudices for women ministers and this may have done the show in before it even aired.

Television reflects what is going on in the country. The 1980s was a cynical time - a sort of "each to his own" atmosphere permeated every aspect of life. But the 1990s has moved away from that to a caring for others. However, there were two ground breaking series in the mid-1980s that did break into the Nielsen's Top 20. "Highway to Heaven," starring Michael Landon as an angel, and "Amen," a sitcom featuring Sherman Hemsley as a deacon. They were the first overtly religions network shows to break into the top 20.

Martha Williamson, executive producer of "Touched by an Angel," goes a step farther, calling her series revolutionary. "If you look at it, we are dealing with the same issues on "Touched by an Angel" or "Promised Land" that "NYPD Blue" or "Law and Order" deal with. We just come from a very different point of view, which is God's point of view. And we have a message: "God loves you. God exists." Which is pretty darned revolutionary for network prime-time television," Williamson says.

She attributes the success of "Touched by an Angel" to the fact that, "We don't give the option of believing or not believing in God...or the option of ethics. We don't have situational ethics. It's not OK to steal sometimes. It's wrong. And so, as a result, I believe people consider that to be a breath of fresh air."

When "Touched by an Angel" first came out TV Guide's reviewer wrote: "It's the iffiest of all the new shows and could even be scuttled by the time you read this." Two years later TV Guide ate its words with this admittance, "CBS's family hit...The most irresistibly loopy hour drama in a while, a show of many delights...High style...beautifully shot and sharply written."

Amen.

APRIL 1997, SENT A STORY TO THE STUDIO
Subject: Touched_By_An_Angel
April 1997, sent a story to the studio in Utah to Della Reese
Date: Mon, 11 Mar 2002
From: John Zimmerman

The story was about the car accident that my son and his fiancee died in
on March 31, 1997. My wife and I are strong believers in angels. We know
that Touched by an angel is a show with actors portraying angels. This show,
and The Promised Land have been our favorites from their beginning. It even
rates higher than football to me and I love to watch football. The messages
in each show have been very inspirational. As a firefighter, it gets very
difficult sometimes to go to work because of the things we encounter. I love
the job and teaching fire safety, first aid and CPR on the side. It really
got to me when I got the the call at my fire station while on duty that my
son was killed in an accident. My days in helping others seemed to be over.
Now it keeps me going. Lately a series of events has caused some doubt
again. I was just wondering if anyone there, or if Della Reese ever received
what I originally sent. My wife, Cheryl was really doing badly. I was
afraid of losing her. That's why I wrote Della, in hope that she or someone
there might write her some words of inspiration for comfort. Nothing ever
came. Our church was there for us though and the many young people that were
our son's friends and His fiance (Ghia's) also. Cheryl has a collection of
angels. Three of them are from Della's line, the African American, Native
American, and Caucasion angels. On Sept. 11, I was fighting a forest fire
180 miles from here. We were in shock and disbelief at what we heard over
our strike team leaders car radio. Even though our loss of a son and future
daughter in law was great to us, I have to stay as a firefighter and teacher
and remain in the Army Reserves, for all of those that need help, protection,
and I will also continue to be someone who cares for them whether I know them
or not. I hope that what I teach makes a good difference in the lives of my
students. My reward is when they tell me how the training enabled them to
help someone injured or ill and or saved a life. Please let me know if you
received this.May God bless you. There is a song I like and it goes like
this, I am the whisper of the wind, quietly, peacefully, you'll find me,
you'll find me.

Sincerely
John Zimmerman

WHY?
Subject: Touched_By_An_Angel
Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002
From: Ray Haynes

Why did "Touch By An Angel" get put on Saturday nights where it is put on the back burner when other special programs come up. I miss being able to watch the show. I love the show. This show displays how we people sometimes question God's plan and blame him for the things that happen to us. It reminds me how God never turns from us but just the opposite. I know it is just a TV show, but it so close to reality. So I really miss not watching the show. PLease consider going back to Sunday nights.

IT'S A HOAX
Subject: Touched_By_An_Angel
Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2001
From: Dave

Touched By An Angel Petition Is A Hoax

Many people may have seen or received an email from an anonymous person which claims that Madalyn Murray O'Hair's organization, American Atheists, filed a petition to have CBS's "Touched By An Angel" program cancelled. Some websites actually have pages that not only make this claim, but which have email petitions that users can fill out and send the government. After a tiny amount of research, it became evident that this is a hoax, much like the old "Proctor and Gamble President is a member of the Church Of Satan" hoax that continues to resurface from time to time. For those who don't remember, a similar chain letter got started in the early 1980's, before the Internet, which accused Proctor and Gamble of being linked to the Church Of Satan, and alluded to an episode of the Phil Donahue show (which in later incarnations of the chain letter was changed to Oprah Winfrey, then to Sally Jesse Raphael) where the president of Proctor and Gamble allegedly admitted on television that he was a Satanist, and that profits from Proctor and Gamble go to the Church Of Satan. If you go to Proctor and Gamble, and then to the Oprah Winfrey websites, they have announcements about this chain letter being a hoax, and the Urban Legends Archive located at:

has more info on this. Apparently an Amway employee started the whole thing.

For those of you who knee jerked at the content of the " Touched By An Angel" e-mail, you'll be happy to know that American Atheists, the organization not mentioned by name, is indeed real and is indeed fighting for your constitutional rights even as you read this. If this sounds a little unreal to you rest assured I know how you feel; I get the same feeling when someone tells me they are trying to save my soul. Mrs. O'Hair, however, is dead. She was murdered a few years ago. The fact that the e-mail mentions her in the present tense suggests that the information is outdated, or a complete fabrication.

Now, back to the fiction. Petition Number 2493 is a hoax. It's been around for a while evidently, and they discuss it at their web sites;
http://www.atheists.org/visitors.center/index.html
http://www.fcc.gov/cib/consumerfacts/Religious.html
In closing, I'd like for you to consider why it might be that a Supreme Court, which has never been made up of anyone but Christians and Jews, might think that prayer in schools is such a harmful idea. Certainly the atheists don't like it, but why would anyone, especially a believer, go so far as to outlaw school prayer and government involvement in religion as a whole? Could it be that letting religion and government mix is a scheme that might do harm to both? I suspect they fear, and rightly so, that government sponsorship or support for any religion will inevitably lead to the religious freedom of those of different beliefs being compromised. And just as you might have feared that one television program being removed might well lead to others being removed as well, so the Supreme Court is concerned that the loss of freedom for some means the loss of freedom for all.

I have no intentions what so ever of trying to keep even one person from believing whatever they wish, indeed I would fight, kill, and die, to make sure they had that right. That's what the government is for, to protect such rights. But to suggest that the government owes any particular faith or belief a platform on which to broadcast, whether it be email or a public school, is counter to the belief of freedom.

P.S. Just go to www.google.com, and search for "Touched+by+an+angel+hoax", and you will see more pages than you can shake a stick at which have even more information on this idiotic hoax.

Thank you so very much for responding so quickly. Shirley Hess Sr.

Please read this:
Read & weep: CBS will be forced to discontinue "Touched by an Angel" for using the word God in every program. Madeline Murray O'Hare, an atheist, successfully managed to eliminate the use of Bible reading from public schools a few years ago. Now her organization has been granted a Federal Hearing on the same subject by the Federal Communications commission (FCC) in Washington D.C. Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord and Savior, on the airwaves of America. They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand! If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broadcast on the radio or by television will be stopped. This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs and Christmas carols from public schools. You as a Christian can help! We are praying for at least one million signatures. This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive and well and concerned about our country. As Christians we must unite on this. Please don't take this lightly. We ignored this lady once and lost prayer in our school and in offices across the nation. Please stand up for your religious freedom and let your voice be heard. Together we can make a difference in our country while creating an opportunity for the lost to know the Lord.

Please press "forward" and only delete out what is not needed, and forward this to everyone on your list. Now, please sign your name at the bottom. Don't delete anything, just go to the next number and type your name. Please do not sign jointly; such as Mr. & Mrs. Each person should sign his/her own name. Please e-mail this to everyone you know, and help us defeat this organization and keep the right of our freedom of religion.

When you click to forward the list then you are able to add your name and number. When you get to 1000 please e mail back to Lisa

Dear Shirley Your information is bogus. I talked to the co-excutive producer of TBAA He says there is no truth to it. Christians always seem to believe this sort of silliness. It is a hoax. A lie. It's an 'Them vs Us' nonsense thing It is all so sad. Warmly David Bruce

Thank you so Much for such a program. Ms. Williamson and the cast of Touch by an Angel for portraying Gods Word as the Truth and the Only Truth!. It has help me forgive others that have bruise and hurt our ministry, it has showed me through His Word that some feelings are so human and that is not wrong to have them, it;s all about what you do with them. I have cried almost in every episode and I have laughed too. It has enhanced by inner emotions and abilities to deal and counsel others. Della, Roma and Dye.....thank you so much. Della, you are my hero and I love you sence of humor. Roma, you have a sweetness that come from within and Senor Muerte (Mr. Death), you bring the issue of death for those who are in God as an ordinary step in life. Thank you again and I will be praying for you!

I try never to miss an episode of Touched By an Angel. It's just a beautifully done show with people who actually seem to care about the subject matter. Of course it helps make it more believable when you realize that Della Reese not only portrays a believer - she is also a minister in real life. She is fantastic in her role. I love all three of the characters. Roma Downey's accent is wonderful and makes me think of Ireland - a place I've always wanted to go. Sharon

DOES NOT LIKE THE WAY OF TELEVISION
Subject: Touched_By_An_Angel

From: Dave

I am pretty well disgruntled with the way that the world espouses things and ideas today. We have few, if any, programs on television, that try to depict the truth. for a world that conciders itself so rich in technological ideas, we are so poor. GOD, the creator of the Heaven and the Earth, indeed of all that is, both visible and invisible, is often depicted a a figment of mans imagination, or as a fairy tale. Well, I say that to trust in JESUS CHRIST as Saviour is indeed life, and that eternal, but to trust in the world will lead unto death eternal. GOD IS ALIVE AND WELL TODAY.
Sincerely; Dave

I have a routine to watch Touched By An Angel on Sundays at 8:00 pm on channel 8. The subject program did nit show yesterday, 10/1/00, and If I recall correctly, it did not show on TV the Sunday before. What's happened? I know that there are people who do not believe in GOD but they can always change stations to another TV program. By taking my favorite program off TV altogether, it does not give me any choice. I am not free to go to another TV station to see the program. I also watch 7TH HEAVEN which is my second choice after Touched By An Angel.
Please advise, Atilio L. Coan

From: Steve

Hello David. I have found out all the information I needed on the Hoax. To answer the question why it was so important to me, is a two part thing.

1. The email was very disturbing.

2. I got the email from my Pastor who sent it to alot of members of my church. I needed to find put for sure that it was a Hoax, before I emailed him back. When I recived the email, I went to the FCC web sight and saw some reference to the email I recived but there language was unclear. I next did a search on one some search engin, and your page came up. I found the postings on the page, but all you said was "Hoax" and "It is nonsense". This gave me more of an Idea that it was a Hoax, but I could not say for sure. I was able to continue to search the net until I found a few web sights that I could point him to. I do not follow the news, it is very disturbing to me.

Response: I talked with the co-excutive producer and he had no knowledge of this so-called FCC action. -David

TBAA IS A BLESSING

From: Peter Boot

Touched by an Angel is a real blessing to my family. It has encouraged us during our times of need. It speaks to so many hurts, so much hopelessness and despair. In Canada we have very little public religious programming. The courage of the guests as they contribute makes it a program of power. Mr. Cosby's appearance just after we lost our 21 year old son to an accident for instance. The content is real, gives hope and points us to Someone who is greater than ourselves. Thank you for this site to express appreciation.

Yes, I try to watch the show every week and when I do miss an episode I really regret it. I love the show because it is so much like real life that sometimes I think it's to close. I have had some pretty devastating things happen throughout my life (similar to what is on the show) but God was always there to walk me through it all. When I was 8 I was in a bad car accident and was expected to die. I fell into a coma for 10 days and after the 5th day the doctors had lost hope, but when I woke up it seemed like I got another chance, God was giving me a second chance to have a life (mind you I had to go at a slower pace, but I'm still totally grateful for that). I think back and wonder about what it must have been like for my parents not to know whether I was going to live or die. Some deaths make me wonder about why God does what he does. A few years ago a neighbour of mine found out that their little 7 year old had cancer, they treated her and said the cancer had gone away and a year later it came back and when she just turned 9 she passed away. At the time I wonder WHY? WHY would God do this to anybody that young but now I have stopped wondering and have started realizing it's in his plans for us. Emily is now a beautiful angel and she can be shared with everyone. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the show and how much you inspire me. I really hope the rumour that is going around is not true about the program going off the air. It is one of the few shows I will watch because it is so real not a fantasy world. Heidi Your shows have really touched my heart. Keep them coming!

A friend of mine is circulating a letter stating that Touched By An Agel is being forced off the air because of religious content. A Petition #2495 addressed to the FCC is attached. Please advise if this is a hoaz.
Thanks. Carole Harsh

OPEN LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Dear Touched By An Angel, Cast Members and Staff,
I would like you to know how much I enjoy your show. It has really helped me in my life to deal with the death of my brother and mother. They have been gone for alittle over a year now . But, your show has helped me to remember to keep my faith and to know I can trust in God to help me through these hard depressing times. I know he will be there to help me. He has been so good to my family and I . He has brought alot of people into my life to help me cope with this. I lost my brother in a house fire January the 9th of 1999 and five days later my mother passed away. My mother had been in a nursing home for the past five years. We knew we would loose her soon because she had given up and was ready to leave. My brothers death was so horrible to me I just couldn't understand how God would allow this to happen . I soon realized God probly planned on taking my mother and my brother together. I miss them so much . Your show has helped me to realize also that I was not the only one who has problems dealing with a lose of loved ones. I feel such a power come over me when I watch your program. I can feel the spirit of the Lord in me . Your program helps people to know that things do happen to others too. And to trust in the Lord and he will help you to deal with your problems. I have read that there is a lady {if you want to call her one ] that is trying to eleminate or cancel your program because of the use of Gods name on the show. And because of the religious program it is . She is also trying to stop the reading of the Gospel of our Lord on airwaves in America. And to stop Gospel programs period! Why is the one persons voice so powerful? Who really cares if she likes these programs or not? If she does not want to watch them , don't! Why should there be so many programs on television with filthy language on it? Why will they allow the name of God be used with damn and that be ok? When they took prayer out of the schools that is when we started having problems with our children. They no longer are taught to have respect for others much less their parents. They have been taught if it feels good , if it is what YOU want then do it. They no longer have to fear the LORD GOD himself. I am trying to pass out flyers for people to sign and to send in to the Federal Communications Commission . I want to try to do what I can to help keep your show on air. And to see what we can do to stop the person from banding the other religious programs or things. I will keep you in my prayers and pray God will help us to fight and win this battle we have going here. Thank you for your time and remember me and my family in your prayers too.
May God Bless You. Pam Wheeler

A MESSAGE EVERYONE SHOULD HEAR
Subject: touched by an angel

From: Heidi

I watch touched by an angel every Sunday and manage to wrestle the remote away from my husband every week. This is the message that EVERY man and woman NEEDS to hear- that God really has been here for us all along- that he loves us and will never forsake us. It is a ray of sunshine in a VERY dark world. I love it and will continue to watch every week.

TOUCHED BY TOUCHED
November 3, 1999. My heart leaps with joy for the success of "Touched By An Angel". I hope that "Hollywood" gets the message. All of us would like to have more movies that we can take the kids and grandkids to see without cringing at the language or vulgar visual effects. Also, after the movie "Apocalypse III....Tribulation" debuts in theaters around the country, maybe "they" will finally listen. Thanks and prayers to "Touched By An Angel"

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
October 24, 1999 I enjoy Touched by an Angel very much, its a breath of fresh air in dark and cold world. I also liked Promised Land and miss seeing it since it disappeared, at least from my viewing area, at the end of last season. I hoped it would return with the new season, but still no Promised Land. I just hope and pray they don't also take off Touched By An Angel. We need more, not less of this type of programming. Keep up the good work.
