40-year-old Andy Stitzer (Steve Carrell) has done quite a few things in his life. He's got a cushy job stamping invoices at an electronics superstore, a nice apartment with a proud collection of action figures and comic books, good friends, a nice attitude. But there's just one little thing he hasn't quite gotten around to doing yet--something most people have done by his age. Done a lot. Andy's never, ever, ever had sex--not even by accident. So is that such a big deal?

SYNOPSIS
Click to enlarge40-year-old Andy Stitzer (Steve Carrell) has done quite a few things in his life.

Well, for Andy's buds at the store, it sure is. Although they think he's a bit of an oddball, there's certainly a planetful of stranger (and homelier) guys who've at least had one go at having a go. They consider it their duty to help Andy out of his dire situation and go to great lengths to help him. But nothing proves effective enough to lure their friend out of lifelong chastity until he meets Trish (Catherine Keener), a 40-year-old mother of three. Andy's friends are psyched by the possibility that "it" may finally happen...until they hear that Andy and Trish have begun their relationship based on a mutual no-sex policy.

Comedy writer and producer Judd Apatow (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, TV's Freaks and Geeks, Kicking & Screaming) makes his feature film directorial debut with The 40 Year Old Virgin, starring Steve Carrell (Anchorman, Bruce Almighty, TV's The Daily Show) and Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich, The Interpreter) and an ensemble cast including Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Leslie Mann, Gerry Bednob, Shelley Malil, Chelsea Smith and Nancy Walls. Apatow also co-writes the script with Carrell and produces along with Shauna Robertson (Elf) and Clayton Townsend (The Skeleton Key).

I’m not sure what’s happening this summer with Wedding Crashers and this movie—both unapologetically R-rated in a world of endless PG-13s, both unabashedly un-PC, both hilarious yet oftentimes awkward to watch with a theater full of strangers, yet both with “hearts of gold” when it comes down to it. I’m not sure what’s happening, but I like it.

[Careful! Don’t step in the Spoilers!]

01.jpg (296 K)Like Wedding Crashers, the premise of The 40 Year-Old Virgin is right in the title. Steve Carell plays Andy, the titular virgin, who is an action-figure collecting, video game playing, figurine painting, bicycle riding, retro 70s nice guy. He works at a thinly veiled parody of Circuit City, along with the other three of the film’s four main male characters—one a fairly stereotypical black character, one a fairly stereotypical pot-smoking character (well, they all smoke pot), and one who’s fairly stereotypically torn-up over losing his girlfriend, so he’s jaded about women, blah, blah.

Coninued on the blog

Ok, I went to see 40 Year Old Virgin (40YOV) tonight. First chance I had. I was really looking forward to it because I had heard it was number one in the box office last weekend. I had also heard that it had a real sweet message. My only hesitancy was that I had also heard it was a bit raunchy with some profanity. But I had heard the same about Wedding Crashers and I really loved Wedding Crashers.

So I know I am going to probably get a lot of hate e-mails on this one (ppl that like reviews generally don’t send e-mails J). But I thought, and I may be the only Reviewer to take this stance, that it was one of the worse movies I have seen this year. Especially in light of all the other great movies out this Summer.
